Greencastle wins county track title
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor They can’t run a home meet because they don’t have a track to call their own, but when the Greencastle High School boys track team does get a chance to run in town they like to show their stuff. Led by Robert Sedlack’s two firsts, Greencastle ended South Putnam’s three-year reign and won the Putnam County High School Track Meet Tuesday at DePauw University’s Blackstock Stadium for the first time since 1980. GREENCASTLE scored 83 points for a comfortable lead over second place South Putnam with 63V 2 . Cloverdale scored 50Vfe to finish third and North Putnam tallied 34. As South coach Wayne Schuetter predicted last week, the team title was decided more by those finishing behind first place. Greencastle won five firsts, South Putnam four and Cloverdale and North Putnam each took three. It was not a record setting meet, the gusty and cold Blackstock winds took care of that, along with the previous wet spring days. Sedlack, South Putnam’s Brian Christy and Cloverdale’s Bryant Lucas were double event winners. SEDLACK AND THE Tiger Cub distance runners played a big role. The Greencastle junior easily won the 1600-meter run iri 4:45.0, followed by teammate Tom Pearson. Sedlack another one-two Greencastle finish in the controversial 800-meter run. The 800-meter run final standings were not made official until all events were completed because the official starter disqualified half of the eight entries. According to the official

explanation, two South Putnam runners, a North Putnam and Cloverdale entry left their assigned lanes and cut in too early. Runners were supposed to cut inside at the northwest corner entering the straightaway, but the disqualified runners cut in on the southwest corner. As a result, Sedlack kept the first place he won virtually unchallenged, and Mike Cantanese finished second, giving Greencastle another one-two finish. CHRISTY WON THE 100meter dash in 11.5 seconds and took the 400-meter dash in 52.4 seconds for the second year in a row. He took a shot at three fir-
sts, but finished third in the 200meter dash. The 200-meter dash was one of the closest races of the afternoon. Cloverdale’s Lucas, earlier this year named outstanding athlete in the Charlton Relays in Plainfield, won the 200 in 23.7 seconds a second straight year after long jumping 19 feet, 9% inches to win first. Lucas’ firsts contributed to a somewhat frustrating day for Greencastle’s Mike Powell. The Cubs got three second place finishes out of Powell, as he was second in the 100 and 200 long jump. GREENCASTLE GOT another one-two finish in the 300-meter low hurdles. John Franklin won the event in 42.6 seconds and teammate Joe Liffick finished second. Along with Christy, South Putnam got a first place from Brian Johnston and Jon Hendrich. Johnston won the 110meter high hurdles in 16.7 seconds, one of his top performances of the year. Hendrich threw the discus 125 feet, 41*2 inches into the wind for a first place. Freshman Robert Cooper accounted for Cloverdale’s last first. Cooper won the 3200-meter run in 10:53.9, leaving second and third places to Greencastle’s Bob Chandler and Jason Fajt. TWO OF NORTH Putnam’s firsts came from field events they were expected to win -- shot put and high jump. But the 400-meter relay was something of a surprise. Tim Blocher won the shot put for the second year in a row with a put of 45 feet, lOV4 inches. Mike Kersey cleared the high jump bar at six-feet, two inches to improve upon last year’s second place finish with a first. North won the 400-relay because Greencastle dropped the baton. Kevin Kays, Tom Crosby, Mike Kersey and Gene Ensor took the lead when the Cubs could not complete the exchange and South Putnam and Cloverdale fell in line to take second and third places. All four Putnam County teams will participate in the West Central Conference meet Friday at Owen Valley High School. Field events begin at 1 p.m.

Cubs still queen of county track
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Since its inception Greencastle has dominated the Putnam County High School Girls Track Meet, winning five of the first seven titles. The Tiger Cubs made it number six Tuesday. Winning eight of the possible 15 firsts and taking two of the five scoring positions in nine events, Greencastle captured its third consecutive Putnam County title at DePauw University’s Blackstock Stadium. THE TIGER CUBS scored 89 points, Cloverdale finished a distant second with 51, North Putnam third with 38 and South Putnam earned 22 points. It was neither a record setting meet, nor an individual’s meet. This was a team meet. No records fell and no individual won more than a single first. Greencastle’s 31-point winning margin was built with firsts in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, 1600-meter run, both the 1600 and 400-meter relays, 100meter hurdles and the long jump and high jump. Out of those firsts, the Cubs also took a second scoring position of some kind in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes, 1600-meter run. GREENCASTLE’S Kim Sheldon and Cloverdale’s Suzanne Reid kept county meet titles they won last year. Sheldon, only a junior, won the high jump at five feet, two inches, which was shy by over an inch from the county record she set last year. Reid threw the discus 95 feet, seven inches to keep her title and leave Sheldon in second.

Lisa McCabe won the 200meter dash in 28.5 seconds and finished second in the 100 for Greencastle. North Putnam’s Cindy Fulwider won the 100meter dash in 13.1 seconds, but the Cubs picked up second and third places with McCabe and Stephanie Dean, who later won the 400-meter dash. Kelly Emberton, Jodi Billman and Beth Braden also won individual firsts for the Cubs. Emberton took the 1600 in
6:18.7, holding off a strong charge from Cloverdale’s Monica Jones on the last lap. Billman pulled off a mild surprise, even to herself, by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.7 seconds. Braden captured the long jump on her first attempt, going 15 feet, one inch for the title. SOUTH PUTNAM got firsts from Colleen Sullivan and Tina Berry. Sullivan came from behind on the last lap to win the
800-meter run in 2:38.6. Berry, who finished second to Billman in the 100-meter hurdles, won the 300-meter hurdles in 50.9 seconds, an event where Greencastle took second and third positions with Tammy Allee and Billman.
