Bombing linked to El Salvador c. 1984 N.Y. Times WASHINGTON - An explosion severely damaged the officers club at the Washington Navy Yard early Friday morning, and a group that said it opposed U.S. policy in Central America took responsibility. No one was in the building at the time. The FBI said a group that called itself the Guerrilla Resistance Movement had taken responsibility for the bombing and had said it was “in solidarity” with the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, one of five leftist guerrilla groups fighting government forces in El Salvador’s civil war. The liberation front itself, often referred to as the FMLN, denied any connection with the bombing. A spokesman in Washington Friday, Francisco Altschul, said the FMLN and the Frente Democratico Revolucionario, or FDR, the political arm of the guerrilla movement, “categorically denies any involvement or responsibility in today’s bombing of a U.S. Navy facility in Washington or in any other similar incident in the U.S.” “The FDR-FMLN has never resorted to this type of action in the U.S. and will never do it,” it went on. “Any implication of direct or indirect responsibility of the FDR-FMLN in this or other similar actions are false and malicious accusations which we reject.” The FBI said it had not heard of the Guerrilla Resistance Movement until Friday, knew nothing about its background or membership and could not independently verify that it had any links with Salvadoran guerrilla forces. “It is not a known terrorist organization,” one federal investigator said. Reagan administration officials, who have grown increasingly concerned in recent months about potential terrorist threats in the United States, said they planned to monitor the investigation of the bombing to see if there is any concrete connection to the turmoil in El Salvador.

Five plead 'not guilty' to preschool molestation charge

LOS ANGELES (AP) - An elderly grandmother charged with molesting children at the preschool she founded said Friday she is “not guilty, period” and stuck out her tongue for a TV camera, as four other school staffers also entered innocent pleas. Virginia McMartin, 76, founder of the now-shuttered Virginia McMartin Preschool in suburban Manhattan Beach, was named along with three of her relatives and three teachers in a 115-count indictment alleging child molestation. Mrs. McMartin, seated in a wheelchair and wearing a heavy coat, proclaimed her innocence when Deputy District Attorney Lael Rubin asked for her plea at the arraignment. Her grandson, Raymond Buckey, 25 who is charged with 75 counts that carry a 156year prison term if he is convicted did not look at the prosecutor as he pleaded “Not guilty, your honor.” Mrs. McMartin and former teacher Mary Ann Jackson, 56, are free on bail. Held without bail are Buckey, his mother Peggy McMartin Buckey, 57; her daughter Peggy Ann Buckey, 28; teacher Babbette

Spitler, 36, and teacher Betty Raidor, 64. Peggy McMartin Buckey, Peggy Ann Buckey and Ms. Jackson also pleaded innocent Friday. Mrs. Spitler and Ms. Ra dor pleaded innocent April 6. Prosecutors said Friday they have videotapes of 170 children describing how they were molested by the seven defendants over the past 10 years. The tapes were made during interviews with children who attended the school and are the basis of the indictment. The indictment is based on testimony that 18 children gave the County Grand Jury about rape, sodomy, druggings and other sexual abuse. But District Attorney Robert Philibosian said additional charges based on interviews with other children could be filed in the next two weeks. Ail seven defendants were ordered to return to Superior Court on May 17 so Judge

Ronald George can set their trial date. George scheduled a preliminary hearing June 18 in Municipal Court. Mrs. Spitler’s attorney, Eliseo Gauna, objected before court Friday to Ms. Rubin raising allegations that were not in the indictment and also protested George’s allowing Cable News Network to televise the pretrial proceedings. George said testimony from McMartin pupils indicated teachers intimidated them into silence by threatening to bomb their homes; drawing a knife across one child’s chest as others watched; putting sharp objects into girls’ vaginas; burying one boy in sand to his chest and leaving him to dig himself out, and forcing youngsters to watch as rabbits and turtles were mutilated. Some children told therapists working for prosecutors that they were photographed in sex acts, but no evidence of child pornography has been found.

U.S. probes attack by MiGs on Army helicopter

STUTTGART, West Germany (AP) The U.S. Army’s European headquarters is investigating whether a U.S. Army helicopter was in Czech air space when it was fired on by two Soviet-built warplanes, an Army spokesman said today. The U.S. Cobra helicopter was not hit Friday by the rocket and cannon fire from the planes. It returned safely to its home station in West Germany, officials said. Lt. Col. Charles White, an Army spokesman in Stuttgart, said today the helicopter was from the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based at Nuremberg. He said officials at U.S. Army Europe in Heidelberg were investigating whether the aircraft had entered Czech air space or the MiG warplanes crossed into West Germany air space.

Lack of money overcome, Jackson says

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson says his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination has overcome a lack of money because he has a “rich message” that appeals to many Americans. Speaking at a SIOO-a-person fund-raising reception in Indianapolis Friday night, Jackson said, “In a poor campaign, a rich message will still get you through.” Jackson said former Vice President Walter F. Mondale has raised more than sls million and Colorado Sen. Gary Hart more than $lO million in their quests for the nomination. By contrast, Jackson’s campaign has raised only $2 million, Jackson said as he appealed for donations from the 200 people at the Madame Walker Urban Life Center. “If they had to run on my budget, they would drop out in despair,” Jackson said of Mondale and Hart.

James M. Shuler said Friday he had not yet been contacted by Questel, but, “We will take that (directive) into consideration.” Meanwhile, a Wells County herd with connections to Bookout is in quarantine awaiting final brucellosis test results, according to the herd’s owner. Douglas Blessing said state officials ordered his herd of about 400 cattle at the Me-Do Lane farm near Bluffton into quarantine. Blessing said he

They also were trying to determine the nationality of the MiGs, he said. White said he had no information on the identities of the helicopter pilots. U.S. Army Europe is one of three divisions of the Stuttgartbased U.S. European Command. In Washington, the Pentagon issued a brief statement about the incident, saying that it occurred at 2:40 p.m (7:40 a m. EST) and was under investigation. Bernd Duering, a West German border policeman, said in a telephone interview from Frankfurt that he believed the helicopter was in Czech territory when the shooting occurred, but not by more than six miles. When asked if it was easy to stray off course in that region, he said, “It depends. If they hadn’t been trained in the area,

At a press conference earlier Friday, Jackson said he is the only Democratic candidate who has pledged to cut defense spen ding 20 percent in order to increase spending on social services. Despite his differences with his opponents, Jackson said he plans to support the Democratic nominee for president. Jackson said he will go to the party’s national convention as a “healer, not a spoiler.” He said he and his Democratic opponents will have to work together after the convention if the party’s nominee is to have a chance to defeat President Reagan in the general election. questions were referred to the Defense Department. A Pentagon official said “it’s been a long time” since an incident of this sort has occurred along the border separating the Soviet bloc from Western Europe. Available records suggest that the last such episode took place more than 20 years ago when a Russian fighter shot down a U.S. Air Force RB-66 reconnaissance plane which strayed into East Germany. That plane was downed on March 10,1964 about 30 miles inside East Germany and the three crewmen survived. Earlier that year, on Jan. 28, 1964, three U.S. airmen were killed when East German fighters shot down a T-39 training plane which had crossed over from West Germany.

Jackson used a Good Friday theme. “If we remain faithful to our principles, if we use love instead of hate, then the stone will be rolled away and there will come Easter in our lives.” “The crucifixion is behind us,” said Jackson, who compared the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King with the crucifixion. “Beyond us is hope, a new light and new life. There is resurrection.” He said the government should work to improve employment and educational opportunities, provide housing for the homeless and health care for the sick. In a message aimed at Indiana voters, he called for increased government support for owners of small farms and a nationwide public works program that would renew the demand for steel. Indiana is the top steel producing state in the nation.
