Hall defensive player of year SCHAUMBURG, 111. (AP) Purdue senior guard Ricky Hall, a standout on the Boilermakers’ 1984 Big Ten cochampion basketball team, has been honored with the conference’s first “Defensive Player of the Year” award. Hall received 20V 2 points of a possible 30 to finish ahead of Illinois sophomore Doug Altenberger, who tallied 19. Altenberger received five first-place votes to Hall’s three, but the Purdue backcourt ace was named on more second-and thirdplace ballots. A first-place vote was worth three points, a second-place vote was worth two points and a third-place vote was worth one point. Voting was conducted by the Big Ten Radio Association, 23 radio announcers who do play-by-play coverage of Big Ten football and basketball games. Each Big Ten head basketball coach was asked to nominate a player to receive consideration for the yearly award. Hall, Purdue’s starting point guard the last 2M> seasons, was a second-team, All-Big Ten selection by The Associated Press. He averaged 10.8 points a game, shot 49 percent from the field, 79 percent from the free throw line and averaged 3.1 rebounds a game during his career. Hall also led the Boilermakers in steals, and was second in assists. His best game of the 1983-84 campaign was a 24-point performance in Fhirdue’s 90-83 overtime victory over Louisville. But it was on defense that Hall was noted. Said Purdue Coach Gene Ready, “The best thing you can say about Ricky’s defense in the conference is to look at some of the people he guarded and look at what they did against him. Twice last year he guarded the league’s top scorer Steve Alford when we played Indiana and Scott Skiles the first time we played Michigan State. “Alford got four points on him and Skiles got four points,” continued Ready. “That says a lot right there. “Ricky went out and played defense for 40 minutes a game where a lot of other players would only give you five,” Ready said.

Tim Hanson of Prior Lake, Minn., and hot-shooting Texas guard Todd Alexander signed letters Wednesday pledging to join Minnesota, Coach Jim Dutcher said. Dutcher said Hanson, a 6-foot--6 forward who averaged 25 points a game, will be a swing man in the Gophers’ offense. Alexander, a 5-11 guard from Waxahachie, Texas, was considered one of the top3o or 35 high school seniors nationwide by some rating services. Meantime, Donny Harris, a 510 point guard from Indianapolis, signed a letter of intent to play at Wisconsin, Coach Steve Yoder said. Harris, who averaged 20 points a game for Broadripple High School last season, will be the quickest player on the court for the Badgers next season, Yoder said. lowa announced it had agreed to signing terms with Michael Morgan, a 6-3 guard from Haughton, La., and Michael Reaves, a 6-3 guard from Milledgeville, Ga. By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer Lee Moore, a 6-foot-8, 190pound forward from Fort Wayne Elmhurst, has signed a national basketball letter of intent with Indiana State University. Except for a brief early signing period last November, Wednesday was the first day for colleges to get written commitments from high school and junior college players. Moore averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds a game and led the Trojans to a 24-5 record. The Sycamores also recruited Dean Oliphant Wednesday. The 6-11, 220-pound center from Jay County High School in Jay, Okla., averaged 24 points and 13 rebounds a game last season. “I think Lee Moore is quite possibly the best big man in the state this year,” said Sycamore Coach Dave Schellhase, who did not sign any players in November. “He has unlimited potential. “Dean has good athletic

Notre Dame, which signed four players in November, signed 6-4 guard Jeff Peters of Whitko, the state’s fifth-highest scorer at 27.7 points a game. “Peters is a very good outside shooter, that’s what caught our eye,” said Gary Brokaw, the Notre Dame assistant coach who signed Peters. “We saw a definite need to improve that area of our game and he’ll
