policy was considered and received unanimous approval by the board. In brief, the policy states that all junior high school students must take seven classes per year equivalent to 14 credits. A student must pass 11 of 14 credits to be promoted to the next grade. Those who do not meet the requirement and are retained • 'will be subject to a review after seven weeks into the new school year. The reviewing body will consist of all seventhgrade teachers, a counselor and administration. Retained seventh-graders who are passing all subjects at the time of the review will be considered for possible promotion. The committee’s decision will be final. THE BOARD ALSO approved the high school teachers’ handbook which will include changes in the language of the policy on teacher absences, staff preparation periods and student tardiness. Leturgez informed the board of some recommendations received by the corporation from the Division of Accreditation and facility planning. Employing a fulltime media staff member for both schools was top on the list of recommendations. The refurbishing of the business and farm shop at the high school and the employment of a full-time guidance counselor at the elementary school were also suggested.
Local option tax assessment eyed
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A state senator who says Indiana’s new local option income tax law will permit “taxation without representation” has asked the attorney general to assess its constitutionality. Sen. Joseph V. Corcoran, RSeymour, made the request in a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Linley E. Pearson. Corcoran, who voted against the 1984 bill authorizing the tax, contends that the provision which allows cities and towns to impose a tax on residents of unincorporated areas violates the rights of those residents. Hospital notes Putnam County Hospital Dismissed Tuesday: Margaret Boswell, Barbara Hammond, Victoria Hankins, Zora Snow, Jewell Wellman and Eldon Wells.

A warm, dry place to get your daily exercise hasn't always been available for fitness enthusiasts, but the owners of the Skate Place, 620 Tennessee St., Greencastle, have helped solve that problem. The Skate Place is open 7-9 a.m. Monday-Saturday for the public to use free of charge for daily exercise. Among those taking advantage of a few laps around the roller rink, sans skates,

“I think these are things we need to think about down the road,” Leturgez told the board. In complaince with State Rule C-I, Section s(d), titles of courses offered at the high school need to be changed, the superintendent said. The high school will now offer basic biological science rather than vocational biology, practical science in place of environmental science, chemistry II is the old advanced chemisty, biology was academic biology and journalism is offered instead of yearbook and newspaper. ‘‘BASICALLY, THEY ARE asking us to designate levels,” Leturgez explained. “Mr. Novak has already been in contact with the assistant state superintendent to acknowledge our compliance.” The State Board of Health will validate the immunization of kindergarten students who were vaccinated for measels last year. “They want to find out if the youngsters vaccinated last year were innoculated with live measle vaccine,” Leturgez explained. THE RESIGNATION OF head basketball coach and athletic director A 1 Tucker was accepted by the board. Tucker will maintain his teaching position with the corporation until his future plans elsewhere are finalized. Speculation is that
“In the first place, residents of non-incorporated areas did not elect the city or town officials who now have the authority to impose this tax,” Corcoran said. “I believe this to be a clear case of taxation without representation. Secondly, the jurisdiction of the city councils and town boards ends at the city limits and town boundaries, not the county line.” The senator insists that the tax is inequitable, even if it is found to be constitutional. Attorney general opinions are advisory only and do not have the force of law.

he will enter the insurance field as an agent. Tucker’s resignation was made public last month in the Banner-Graphic. Board president Fred Mann appointed a search committee to include himself, member Dewey Garrett, board vice president Ron Rubeck, Leturgez and Novak to fill the vacancy left by Tucker. MRS. SANDRA PHIPPS also resigned her position as junior class sponsor. In a letter to the board, Mrs. Phipps expressed concern about the high school administration’s decision to hold the junior prom at the school rather than at an outside location as in the past. “In the three years that I have handled the prom, I could honestly say I could take both criticism and praise,” Mrs. Phipps said. “But this year’s prom will not be a reflection of my leadership.” In other board business, the board: -Signed a supplemental contract for Joe Moody to teach a 30-hour course in adult agriculture welding. -Approved the attendance of A 1 Tucker, Ken Williams and Kieth Puckett at a basketball clinic in Indianapolis April 13 for a half-day. -Approved the use of a room for the Cloverdale Junior Baseball League April 10 and for the Linda Morris Dance studio during a recital May 24-25.
