Tornado watchers waiting INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - As another tornado season arrives in Indiana, the National Weather Service is hoping a new use of ground observers will produce greater efficiency in tracking dangerous storms. Weather radar is crucial to forecasters, but the best source of information of the potentially fatal tornado can be someone watching a storm on the ground, says National Weather Service meteorologist Henry Steigerwaldt. The weather service and amateur radio networks plan to use “weather chasers” to improve ground-level reporting this year, says Mike Head, Indiana section emergency coordinator of the American Radio Relay Leauge. ' Head says the observers will literally follow storms this year. “What we are going to do is concentrate on the chase,” he explained. “When the radar meteorologists say they have a weather formation that is of high interest and if we have people in the area, we will have them try to observe the formation from a safe distance.” He said the operators, some with mobile radios, will approach storms from a southerly direction to an effort to track their development. Steigerwaldt said the chasers should be able to help in predicting smaller tornadoes and storms producing damaging straight-line winds that might go undetected by radar. Radar will still play a significant role, though. Steigerwaldt says he watches the radar screen for storms that veer to the right of their normal paths or start a slow, counterclockwise rotation. Other danger signals include the merging of two strong thunderstorms, or the rapid drop of a .thunderhead cloud from the upper atmosphere to the ground, he said. There are two types of alerts associated with tornado season, the weather service says. A tornado watch is announced when the conditions are right for a tornado or extremely strong storm to develop. A watch is usually in effect for four to eight hours, and the areas of a tornado watch are usually organized in a geographic band 200 miles long and 140 miles wide. A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted. An average of 23 tornadoes are reported each year in Indiana. On Wednesday, a statewide tornado warning and communications test will be conducted from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Gary strike enters third week

GARY, Ind. (AP) - A third week of cancelled classes began today for the 29,000 students in Gary’s public schools, as weekend peacemaking efforts by state mediators, Gary teachers and school administrators failed to end a strike by the system’s teachers. The walkout, which is not legal by state law, has closed classrooms since March 4. No legal action has been taken to try and force the teachers back to the classroom. Representatives for the two HOME BURGLARS GET $200,000 DANVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Police say thieves carried away two safes containing a total of $200,000 last week from an isolated Hendricks County home that lacked security devices. A cleaning woman discovered the theft at the rural home of Phillip J. Riedesel, who sells and buys large farm equipment. Hendricks County sheriff’s investigators were assigned to the case Friday. The burglary is believed to have occurred March 11 or March 12.

Hazing violations suspend BSU f rat

MUNC'IE, Ind. (AP)-ABall State University fraternity has been suspended indefinitely for alleged hazing violations. A written statement released by university officials Saturday night said that Beta Theta Pi national fraternity, in mutual agreement with the Office of Fraternity Advising, had suspended the charter of the Ball State chapter of Beta Theta Pi for “apparent violations of hazing policies.” The suspension means initiation of the fraternity’s 1983 fall pledge class will be halted. The fraternity will also be barred from participating in spring rush or any organized social activities or intramural sports events. University officials would not give any details about the alleged hazing violations, but said any further action against the fraternity would depend on the results of a continuing investigation. Fraternity members refused to discuss the incident. Beta Theta Pi district Chief

Randy Phillips and a representative from the chapter’s national organization visited local chapter members Thursday to tell them about the reprimand. Richard W. Harris, Ball State student programs assistant, said the fraternity’s national organization had cooperated fully with the university’s investigation. Harris said “a good number of people” were involved in the incidents leading to the suspension but, gave no specifics about those incidents “We’re very, very concerned about matters like this,” Harris said. “The university plans to take as strong a stand as possible. This (hazing violations) will not be tolerated.” Ball State’s University Senate passed a resolution in January prohibiting hazing. Student senators Brian Richards and Kyle Babcock presented the proposal on behalf of the Student Welfare Council.
