Random House executive editor Robert Loomis described the book, “Setting Things Straight,” as “not editable.” “It was like working with a piece of mush trying to make a statue,” he said of the manuscript. Ms. Howar, 49, a reporter for the “Entertainment Tonight” television program, had counterclaimed for $200,000, charging breach of contract on grounds that she had not been given enough guidance by the publishers.

EILEEN BRENNAN: Never doubted return

LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Eileen Brennan, working for the first time since being badly hurt when she was struck by a car, said there “never was a question in my mind that I wouldn’t be back.” Miss Brennan, who starred in the movie “Private Benjamin” with Goldie Hawn and was continuing her role as the martinet Army captain in the television version at the time of the accident, now is co-starring with Ed Asner in an ABC pilot called “Off the Rack.” “I didn’t know there was a question in anybody else’s mind about my coming back,” Miss Brennan, 49, said at a news conference Thursday on the set where the half-hour comedy about Los Angeles’ garment district was taped the night before. The actress suffered two broken legs as well as skull and facial fractures when struck while crossing a street in 1982. The news conference opened with Asner carrying her across the set in his arms. He put her down and she walked to a seat behind a table to recall her recovery. “The anticipation of work is always what I’ve used for therapy,” Miss Brennan said. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Charges of armed robbery and burglary have been filed against two teen-agers in the break-in at the Hollywood Hills home of actress Penny Marshall, but prosecutors decided against bringing any counts of kidnapping or assault. Miss Marshall, star of the TV comedy “Laverne & Shirley,” was briefly held captive by two burglars dressed as Ninjas, members of a semi-mythical Japanese society of criminal warriors, police said. The suspects, Daniel Francis Shepphard, 19, of Los Angeles, and Anthony Pierson, 18, of Beverly Hills, weren’t charged with assault or kidnapping because apparently there wasn’t enough evidence.
