Hints from Heloise
Restrictive clothing not advisable for pregnant women
DEAR HEIX)ISE: Just read a suggestion from one of your readers that expectant mothers could wear thigh-high hose that stay up by themselves. The best hose for pregnant women are pantyhose with a maternity panel, or socks. Many women first get varicose veins when they are pregnant and this is also a time of greater risk for blood clots in the veins of the legs. The reason is the increased pressure on the veins from the reproductive organs. Hose with a strong elastic band may constrict the veins and make the problem worse. I strongly recommend that pregnant women sit down for 20 to 30 minutes, three or four times a day, and raise their legs so their ankles are at heart level or higher and give those veins a break. This will help prevent problems that could make the rest of their lives miserable. Woman Surgeon, South Dakota ★ ★ * We do appreciate your informing us of the danger of wearing restictive clothing when pregnant. Also, dear friends, you should check with your doctors before performing any exercises. You don’t want to take any chances during this special time. Heloise LETTER OF THOUGHT Dear Heloise: I always try to remember that we cannot always control what happens around us, but we can control how we feel about it. These words can sure help one to avoid a lot of heartbreak. Maire P. ALMOST-OIL PAINTINGS Dear Heloise: Could you please give me the procedure for making ordinary printed pictures look more like oil paintings? For one of our projects, my Cub Scout den would like to do this with some magazine pictures we have. A Den Mother

Just stretch a piece of our favorite little helper, nylon net, over the picture (any printed picture) and hold it firmly. I tape the corners of the net to keep it flat. Brush on a very light coat of shellac. Carefully remove the net and let the picture dry. It should give the same appearance that a painting on canvas has. Heloise SOAP DISH Dear Heloise: Here’s a hint to get rid of the slimy mess in most soap dishes. I needed a soap dish, but kept forgetting to buy one. So one day I made do with the little saucer from an old clay flower pot. I found it. works great because the clay absorbs water. You can even paint it, around the outside rim only, and make designs on it. Don’t paint the whole thing or it won’t absorb water. S.G. PERFECT HAMBURGERS Dear Heloise: I have a great hint for perfectly round hamburgers. First, I take the plastic lid from an eight-ounce tub of margarine. Shape the meat in a round ball and press it on the inside of the lid. Presto! Round hamburger patties. Then, I put them in plastic freezer bags and freeze them separately. linda Ridarsky PATCHING POINTER Dear Heloise: My two preschoolers manage to get holes in their clothes almost as soon as they get them. Consequently, I’ve had plenty of practice patching jeans and jackets. Believe it or not, the best patching material I’ve ever used is fleecy bathrobe velour the cheaper, 100 percent synthetic, less-plushy type. It comes in so many colors that the patches can be matched almost perfectly and can even be decorative if you want. And, since the edges of the fleece do not fray, you can cut a patch in any shape you

wish and stitch it in place without having to turn the edges under. It also wears like iron and will hold up under umpteen washings. Alex Zander * * * Sounds like it can't miss.
Parents play important role in helping their children diet
c. 1984 N.Y. Times WASHINGTON - Researchers are fine-tuning their strategies for helping children lose weight, after finding that parents play an important role in the dieting success of youngsters and that children often do not grow out of their socalled baby fat. In studies by Dr. Leonard Epstein, a psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, parents’ involvement in children’s dieting had little effect on the number of pounds lost, but it changed significantly the amount of time children kept down their weight. This line of scientific investigation is part of a growing trend to do something about added pounds in childhood, rather than waiting to attack the problem in adolescence or adulthood. “If all obese kids automatically became thin adults, we wouldn’t be too concerned about identifying children we feel are at risk and trying to treat them,” says Epstein. While doctors may placate parents by saying, “Don’t worry about your child’s weight, he or she will grow into it,” studies by Epstein and

others indicate otherwise. At least four large scientific studies have concluded that many children who have weight problems fight a life-long battle of the bulge. British researchers studied more than 5,000 children and found that 41 percent of them who were obese at age 7 also were obese as adults. Only 1 percent of the children who were normal weight at age 7 became obese as adults. Another study tracked six-month-old babies to adulthood. The findings showed that obese infants were more than twice as likely to become obese adults when compared with normalweight babies. Other research suggests that like many health problems, who your parents are has a big impact on how much you will weigh. Children who had one or two heavy parents were at a far greater disadvantage in terms of losing excess weight and keeping it off than youngsters whose parents were not heavy. “The risk is greater for kids if they have obese parents,” Epstein told a recent meeting of the Nutrition Coordinating Committee, part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. and exercise habits early in life, and to avert the later health problems that accompany added pounds such as high blood pressure. In a study of pre-adolescent boys and girls, Epstein and his colleagues found that weight loss increases blood levels of high-density lipoprotein, a type of cholesterol that’s associated with protection against cardiovascular disease. “The earlier you can get into this whole mesh, the better off you are,” Epstein says. Another change in the medical community’s philosophy on dieting is the growing trend toward considering obesity a chronic disease, not a short-term condition that can be dealt with in a matter of weeks or months. Up to 95 percent of all dieters who lose weight ultimately gain it back a failure rate that continues to concern researchers. Yet, new findings underline the importance of longer-term weight-loss programs. The goal in experimental studies conducted by Epstein and his colleagues is not just to take off weight, but to keep it off for good. “Our philosphy has been to increase the duration of the weight-loss programs,” wepstein says. “All of our programs are at least one year long. “We now have a better notion of how long it takes to change a habit. We used to think that it was two months, then we expanded that to six months, and now we believe that it takes up to a year and perhaps longer.”
