Duran Duran commotion recalls '6os Beatlemania
By YARDENA ARAR Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) - They’re filling huge arenas with screaming girls, their “Seven and the Ragged Tiger” LP is in the Top 10 and their pouty, youthful faces peer out from teen fan magazines everywhere. To some observers, the commotion surrounding Duran Duran’s current U.S. tour recalls the Beatlemania of two decades ago, and the band has been jokingly dubbed the Fab Five. And if rock critics are wrinkling their noses at the band’s brand of techno-pop music, lead singer and songwriter Simon Le Bon couldn’t care less. “I think critics in the music business are different from theater critics,” he said in a recent interview with the Associated Press, settling into an overstuffed chair in his Westwood hotel suite. “They don’t have that much power.” But there is a compelling media force behind Duran Duran, and it can be summed up in three letters: MTV Music Television. Scarcely noticed by radio and the public in two previous visits to the United States, Duran Duran saw its following slowly but surely mushroom after the Warner-Amex cable rock video

channel began frequent airings of what at the time were highly distinctive videos. In “Hungry Like a Wolf,” the strapping, blond Le Bon donned pith helmet and khakis to chase an exotic maiden through the jungles and bazaars of Sri Lanka. “Girls on Film” is a soft-porn salute to the soft-porn film industry. “Save a Prayer,” also shot in Sri Lanka, is a hauntingly romantic travelog. The response to the videos is credited for convincing radio to start playing the band’s “Rio” LP, which became a best seller about six months after its initial release. Le Bon said the band deliberately set out to make waves with video after making a modest splash as one of the brighter lights of Britain’s New Romantic movement, which brought costumes and dance music back into style after punk rock’s grim reign. Le Bon, at 25 the band’s oldest member, recalls a meeting with managers Paul and Michael Berrow and fellow band members Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, John Taylor (none of them related) and Nick Rhodes “We were sitting and talking and saying, ‘Look, we need something like Pink Floyd had stereo ... They had this new device at their fingertips, and
they were the first to really use it to its full extent. “And we thought the same thing was happening in video that so far, you’ve got this medium, and all that people were doing with it was either recorded live shows, or showing bits of old black-and-white silent movies or cartoons which have nothing to do with music. “Nobody had ever really taken a band out into a setting, out into anywhere exotic or exciting a mountain or under a waterfall And we thought, let us go, let us be the first people to do it. Let us go try and pioneer video.”

Barbara Mandrell to star in 'Coalf ire'
LAKE CITY, Tenn (AP) - In her powder blue bowtie blouse and sporty short hair, Barbara Mandrell looked more like a federal civil servant than a glamcrous queen of country music. But that was just the way she was supposed to look for her new TV movie, “Coalfire.” The 35-year-old singer, in her first major acting role, plays a Washington, D.C., geologist who helps evacuate residents endangered by a fire raging out of control in a mine underneath their small town. Miss Mandrell heads a cast that includes Tom Wopat of the television series, “The Dukes of Hazzard,” Eddie Albert and Carol Kane. CBS will air the film as a “Movie of the Week” this fall. The award-winning entertainer took time out from the project to keep a previouslyscheduled concert tour in Massachusetts, and has just released a new album, “Clean Cut,” which features the single, “Happy Birthday Dear Heartache.” Miss Mandrell said she has turned down hundreds of acting

roles in the past two years because the parts called for sex and obscene language. There is romance in her new TV movie, and Miss Mandrell said that acting romantic with a man other than her husband, Ken Dudney, wasn’t easy at first. The inexperienced actress had to rehearse a while for a kissing scene. “Everything was going fine until our faces got to within a couple of inches of each other and I looked into those big blue eyes and just lost it,” Miss Mandrell said. “At least he is talented and handsome. All my girlfriends will be jealous,” she said. Her husband told her “act like a grownup and quit giggling.” Although she isn’t a veteran actress, she has “excellent instincts and a great attitude,” Wopat said. And she has been on stage a lot more often than he has, he said. Much of that stage experience came in 1980 and 1981, when she and her sisters, Louise and Irlene, starred in the NBC variety show, “Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.”
