c. 1984 N.Y. Times About 110 miles to the northwest of New Orleans, in the heart of what once was plantation country, stands the community of St. Francisville, La. It was there, in West Feliciana Parish, that John James Audubon inspired by the beauty of the wooded ridges and the clear streams of the countryside painted more than 80 of his “Birds of America” while living in the parish in the 1820 s.
And it is there, in his memory, that the 13th annual Audubon Pilgrimage takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 16,17 and 18. The pilgrimage includes historic homes (such as Old Greenwood, a plantation cottage built in 1810 when Feliciana Parish was a part of Spanish West Florida); gardens, such as Afton Villa (created in the 19th century by a wealthy cotton planter and his

'Wicked Day' dark end to glory of Camelot
THE WICKED DAY. By Mary Stewart. Morrow. 453 Pages. $15.95. This is a further imaginative exploration of the Arthurian legend by Mary Stewart, who has already produced a trilogy dealing with the earlier parts of the saga. Following “The Crystal Cave,” “The Hollow Hills” and “The Last Enchantment,” comes this dark evocation of the end of the glory that was Camelot. This novel shares with the other three the successful creation of a credible period feeling and presentation of quasimythical personages as warm and lively individuals which made the trilogy entertaining and interesting reading. But here there’s also an attempt to see beyond and beneath the accepted tapestry images, and a re-interpretation that lets Miss Stewart open up a variety of possible undercurrents, subplots and inner motives. “The Wicked Day” centers on Mordred, the illegitimate son of King Arthur by incest with his half-sister Queen Morgause the child the wizard Merlin had

predicted would one day destroy Arthur. Mordred’s story is told from his birth to the tragic end of his life and Arthur’s downfall. In an author’s note, Miss Stewart says she has “tried to iron out the absurdities in the old story, and add some saving grays to the portrait of a black villain.” She has succeeded in giving Mordred much saving gray. There’s the affecting phase of his earliest childhood with foster parents, simple fisherfolk, in the northern islands of Scotland. Then comes inevitable contact with his own royal family and his realization of who he really is. He is brought into the court circle, grows and changes, develops pride, ambition and great love tor his father. The blackness that envelops the story comes from evil that spreads like a fatal poison. Miss Stewart manages to arouse more pity than condemnation for Mordred and his inability to escape its taint Joan Brunskill Associated Press

March offers rainbows of activities at Indianapolis Children's Museum
INDIANAPOLIS-The Children’s Museum, located at 30th and Meridian Streets, will offer a rainbow of programs and activities throughout the month of March. Beginning March 3, “Reds, Blues, Rainbow Hues!”, an exhibit of acclaimed silkscreen creations by renowned Boston artist Mickey Myers will be featured. Many of the bold prints offer unusual and fanciful looks at crayons, colored pencils, lollipops and other childhood favorites. The exhibit runs through May 21. MYERS WILL demonstrate her art in personal appearances at the museum on March 10 and 11. Call 924-KIDS to find out the times of these personal appearances. Any youngster interested in becoming a Junior Curator may come to the museum on March 3 between 9:30 a.m. and noon. This day of orientation will preview upcoming Junior Curator training sessions.
