Church Women United mark World Day of Prayer March 2
Putnam County Church Women United will observe World Day of Prayer Friday, March 2, at the Putnamville United Methodist Church. A coffee hour at 9:30 a.m. will be followed by the worship service at 10 a.m. The annual celebration, sponsored in the United States by Church Women United, unites women of faith in some 5,000 communities throughout the nation and 170 other countries in a common day of prayer. THIS YEAR marks the 97th consecutive observance of an event which began in 1887 as a day of prayer for mission by lay women of the Presbyterian Church. It has grown to include
Contract rejected NEW YORK (AP) - Lengthy contract negotiations between the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries and its nonexecutive staff appeared stalled after employees voted 124-7 to reject a proposed contract. But the rest of the 245 employees didn’t even vote, although all were eligible to do so. The proposed contract included a 7 percent pay raise implemented unilaterally Jan. 1 for all employees. Following the negative vote, 80 of the employees petitioned management that they don’t want union dues deducted from their pay nor union representation, blaming it for stiffened management rules on taking time off. The 80 were reported among 88 who initially voted against union representation in December 1982, when District 65 of the United Automobile Workers won a representation election. Six Nebraska fathers freed, but say they'd go to jail again
LOUISVILLE, Neb. (AP) - Six fathers of pupils at the illegal Faith Christian School, free today after 93 days in jail for refusing to answer a judge’s questions, said they would go through the ordeal again “for freedom of religion.” Sarpy County District Judge Ronald Reagan ordered the men released Thursday, three months to the day after they were arrested. At the heart of the matter is a refusal by the church school to use statecertified teachers. The six fathers were released after they promised not to send their children to the school until it complies with state laws. The children have not been attending school, and a lawyer for the six men said they would not attend school in the state. One of the men, David Carlson, said they had emerged from the Cass County Jail with a “stronger resolution. If you had told us we would be in there for 93 days, we might have wavered. But now, we’d be

countless thousands of Christian women of various races, cultures and traditions on six continents of the world. Written by Christian women in Sweden, this year’s World Day of Prayer service is on the theme “Living Water from Christ, Our Hope.” Women representing several Putnam County churches will participate in the local service. In recognition of the fact that water is one of the most serious deprivations from which the world’s people suffer, this service seeks to motivate not only prayer, but action to alleviate physical and spiritual thirst in the world. Actress Lynn Redgrave, shown here in the John Street United Methodist Church in New York City, will host “A Lost History,” an NBC News religious program focusing on the search for women who have played important roles from the beginning of Methodism in America 200 years ago to the present. The program will be telecast 1-2 p.m. Sunday, March 18. It is expected to be carried locally by WTWO-TV, Channel 2, Terre Haute, and WTHR-TV, Channel 13, in Indianapolis.
willing to do it again.” “If we have to go back to jail for freedom of religion, we’ll do it again,” said Ralph Liles, another of the men held in contempt of court since Nov. 23. , “During this time there have been at least seven major accomplishments from the perspective of Faith Baptist Church,” the Rev. Edward Roe, acting pastor at Faith Baptist Church and acting director of the school, said in praising the six men. Roe said the Nebraska Legislature “is giving serious concern” for the recommendation of a panel appointed by Gov. Bob Kerrey that Christian schools not be required to hire certified teachers. The judge also voided warrants for the arrest of the men’s wives. The women fled Nebraska in November to avoid arrest. A seventh father was freed last month after he decided to testify. A warrant for his wife’s arrest was also

voided Thursday. Reagan let stand, however, arrest warrants for the Rev. Everett Sileven, pastor of the Faith Baptist Church and director of the school, and Sileven’s daughter, Tresa Schmidt, who has taught at the school. Both Sileven and his daughter have remained, out of the state to avoid arrest. A compromise Wednesday by Cass County Attorney Ron Moravec and Michael Farris, attorney for the six men, led to the release order. Moravec “made me this offer, that the men wouldn’t have to testify in exchange for their promise not to send their children to Faith Christian School,” Farris said. “The men didn’t want to testify against themselves, their family, the other people in the church or the pastor.” The children of the six fathers have not attended the school since the men were jailed, Farris said.

Friends, strangers raise SIOO,OOO to pay widow's home mortgage
(c) 1984 Dallas Morning News ARLINGTON, Texas Three weeks before he died of a heart attack in November, 34-year-old Ronald Tiner and his family moved into their dream house a two-story, red-brick home on a shady lane in north Arlington. The afternoon he died, Tiner, principal at Workman Junior High School, was to have signed an insurance policy that would have paid the $1,200-a-month mortage on the home in the event of his death, his friends said. Without the insurance, his widow, Debbie, a 4th-grade teacher at Butler Elementary School in Arlington, made plans to sell the home to pay off the SIOO,OOO mortgage on it. That’s when friends, members of the Tiners’ church, students and their parents went to work. In the past three months, more than 600 people many of them strangers have raised about $91,500 to help pay off the mortgage. Many of the donations came from members of the Tiner’s church, the North Davis Church of Christ, family friends said. But also among the donations was a fabric bag full of nickels, dimes and quarters gathered by schoolchildren

at Butler Elementary, the friends said. Six of Tiner’s closest friends took a $9,500 loan to pay the rest of the mortgage. Last week, on Valentine’s Day, the friends paid the mortgage company SIOO,OOO and Mrs. Tiner was told the home belonged to her and her 8-year-old son, Eric. “I just can’t believe it’s true,” Mrs. Tiner said Monday. “My friends told me from the very beginning that they would take care of the house, but I just thought it was a dream. They kept me in the dark and told me not to worry. And then last week, they told me and it was really a dream come true.” Paying off the mortage was “really a tribute to Ron and speaks of how he lived his life being a friend,” said Charles McCulley, an industrial arts teacher at Arlington Lamar High School and a friend of the Tiner family. Even on a teacher’s salary, Mrs. Tiner said, she and Eric are in a position now to keep the house. “We’re going to make it fine,” she said. “Our friends have been so supportive. Ron was such a good friend to everybody that I think in some ways his friends are doing this to repay his friendship. He was a very special person. ”

St. Meinrad launches priest recruitment
ST. MEINRAD, Ind. (AP) - Fearing that the average age of the priesthood will be 72 by the year 2,000, vocational directors of the St. Meinrad Seminary and Evansville Diocese in southwestern Indiana have started a recruitment program. “People aren’t encouraging young men to enter the priesthood the way they used to,” said the Rev. Benet Amato, director of recruitment at St. Meinrad. “A man may never consider it if nobody encourages him.” Vocations director the Rev. Ron Zgunda says that in the Evansville Diocese, the dwindling numbers of priests are “nearing the critical point,” Amato knows that the problem is a whole lot more than just a lack of encouragement. He says the average age of a Catholic priest is now 56, and if something isn’t done, that average age will increase to 72 by the year 2000. The Evansville diocese has

not ordained any priests in three years. St. Meinrad launched a threephase project about a year ago to encourage the recruitment of new seminarians. One part is a grassroots program in which parish priests choose a group of young people with leadership qualities, but who are not necessarily potential priests, who get together and talk about priesthood. The second phase involves youth leadership conferences called “Claim Your Call” in which young people are encouraged to examine their own vocational talents and relate them to a possible career in the Roman Catholic Church. Part three of the project is the production of a film, “A Leadership of Love,” which was produced in Louisville, Ky. The movie, which shows vignettes from the lives of three St. Meinrad seminarians, will soon be appearing in parishes throughout the region.
