Worry clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D .M.D

Dad paid good money every day, trying to shorten his lifespan. But for SI,OOO, I gave him an extra 15 years longevity, so he didn’t die till age 82. CASE G-957: My Dad and Mother visited us here in Chicago when he was nearly 65 years old. Some other relatives were present, including an uncle who was almost unable to walk, due to Buerger’s disease. That is a condition in which the blood vessels in the lower legs become so thickened, due to cigarets or cigars, that the legs feel numb and the smoker staggers like a drunkard. “Pop”, I said, as we sat around the living room, visiting, “why don’t you quit your cigarets before you get as bad as Uncle Otho?” “Oh, I could quit easily,” he boastfully replied, “if somebody made it worth while for me to do so.” The telephone rang just then, so I started to leave the room to answer it, and as I went through the doorway, I heard him say: “Why, if anybody offered me SI,OOO to stop smoking, I could quit this very day.” That final statement rang in my ears, so when I came back, I decided this was my big chance. For Mother had coaxed him a couple of times to give up smoking and he had tried, but always had a relapse. My wife and I weren't flush with funds but I knew she had over SI,OOO in our checking account at our Evanston bank, so I said: ‘ “Pop, I heard you say you

The year Edgar Kaplan won the Life Masters Individual (1957) he also reported the tournament for the Bridge World magazine. The Individual is a special type of event where the participants take turns playing with each other, as contrasted with pair and team championships where you play steadily with a partner of your own selection. Naturally, when you play with a succession of strange partners, some of whom may have wild flights of fancy, almost anything can happen

could stop cigarets immediately if it were worth SI,OOO to you. “Did you mean that or were you just boasting?” “Sure, I meant it,” he exclaimed, for he was surrounded by some old friends and neigt xtrs, so 1 figured he might get himself so far out on a limb, I could cut it off. “Okay, Pop,” 1 replied, “Here’s my check for SI,OOO and I’ll let you smoke the rest of today, but tomorrow you are through with tobacco.” Well, he’d much rather have had his cigarets but he was publicly committed, so I knew his pride would make him accept my challenge. Mrs. Crane and I had a dinner engagement across town, so we left my folks to babysit that night. Our two older sons, then about 12 and 10, later told us: “Grandpa, didn't seem at all happy after you left and he looked sad when he went to bed!” But he abided by his vow. It cost me SI,OOO but he lived to be 82, dying of a stroke. So I lengthened his life by about 15 years! He had started smoking at the age of 6, trying to be a big shot with the older boys in the gang that let hirn trail along with them. So send for my booklet, “How to Stop Smoking”, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25?. (Always write to Dr Crane Hopkins Bldg.. and does. As Kaplan commented in his report: “There are three factors in the winning of this event: you must play reasonably well; you need a lot of fortitude; and you must be enormously lucky. Luck is the theme of this article, as it should be in one about the Individual.” After describing several hands in which he was both lucky and unlucky, Kaplan discussed the accompanying hand, which came up near the end of the final session. “This was the luckiest of all. As South, I hold no brief for my partner’s three notrump bid, although it won the tournament for me. I had done my darndest to scream that my hand was worthless except at clubs. But there I was at three notrump. “I won the heart queen in dummy, East’s king falling. I led the nine of clubs f not the seven l to my king, and West put on the ace. West played a low diamond and the jack forced the ace. A diamond return r ode to the king. Now 1 led a club, finessed the eight, and made ten tricks for a top. “You see, I was lucky enough to have Norman Kay on my left, in the West position. Never in his life has Norman been guilty of so bad a play as winning the first club if he could hold up, so the finesse was marked. “Obviously, the secret of winning Individuals is to make sure that your opponents are more expert than your partners.”
