Senate panel reconsiders, passes 'Faith Assembly' bill
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A bill to remove the religious defense for parents who don’t seek medical treatment for their seriously ill children was reconsidered and approved by a Senate committee Thursday. The Senate Public Policy Committee voted 5-3 for the measure without discussion, one week after the bill stalled in the same committee on a 4-4 vote. No committee members changed their votes, but different members were present,

NEW YORK (AP)-Television evangelist Jimmy Swaggart is the subject of a Public Television documentary to be aired next week. But Swaggart doesn’t want to talk about it. At his multimillion-dollar headquarters at Baton Rouge, La., a spokesman said the only word from him was ‘ ‘no comment. Asked for just simple facts about Swaggart’s operations, the spokesman, David Van Gorder, declined to provide any information, even such innocuous bits as Swaggart’s age. He is 48, and, according to the new documentary, a high school dropout with no formal theological training, but who has become “one of the most popular and powerful” TV preachers in the world. Several stations, in Boston and Atlanta, dropped his show, refusing to sell him time, charging distorted swipes at

As with other television evangelists, most of the money goes for buying TV time. “They’re under severe economic pressure,” says sociologist William Martin of Rice University, a one-time minister himself, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and commentator in the documentary. Printer's Mass 2:30 a.m. service draws those who work odd hours
PITTSBURGH (AP) - At 2:30 a.m. every Sunday, people whose lives border on the other side of midnight bus drivers, cabbies, newspaper truck drivers, college students, police officers gather at Epiphany Roman Catholic Church. It is time for the Printer’s Mass. They come for the convenience of the hour, but they also come out of tradition. The 2:30 a.m. Mass was begun 80 years ago to accommodate Pittsburgh’s newspaper printers, who would go to the big brick church after putting out their Sunday editions. “It’s convenient. That’s no lie. If I didn’t come to church, I’d sleep in,” said Keith Duerring, 33, a bus driver who has served as an altar boy for eight years. “It’s quick and it’s quiet. There’s no one to bother you,” said Jeff Studeny, 20, a department store printer. “It’s a tradition and we just

Now, only about 100 people sit in the long wooden pews for the 25-minute service, a nononsense affair with neither music nor homily. About half of the worshipers are college students, dressed in ski jackets and jeans. Four priests take turns celebrating the weekly Mass. One is the Rev. Joel Baylon, 29, who arrived from the Philippines last summer. The first time he celebrated the Printers’ Mass, Baylon said he stayed up and watched television. The second time, he tried sleeping after dinner and woke up at 1 a.m. The third time, when he tried to sleep he couldn’t; he ended up watching television. He still hasn’t found a solution. “I manage to do it,” Baylon said. “It’s very difficult on my part to prepare for a 2:30 a.m. Mass. (But) the mere fact that it’s there and people come, I’m sort of inspired.”
