As expected, Tate picks proven winner
By The Associated Press Throwing his Hoosier loyalties aside, all-stater Lars Tate of Indianapolis North Central thinks he would rather throw in his lot with winners this fall. Today is the first day high school seniors may sign a national letter of intent to play college football. And as many former high school football stars waited to make earlier a nounced decisions official, Tate said Tuesday he had decided to join the Georgia Bulldogs. The 6foot-2, 207-pound Tate selected the Bulldogs after narrowing his decision to

Georgia, Indiana and Michigan. The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday that Tate selected Georgia because “I like the school, I like the coach (Vince Dooley. I like the climate and I feel like I have a chance to play right away.” Before making his decision, Tate said, “I think I need to be around people who are winning I know I’m from Indiana, but I don’t think they are going to any bowl games for a while.” The two-time Associated Press All-State first-team pick visited the Athens, Ga., campus last weekend. “The people were real frien-
dly,” said Tate, who ran for 1,417 yards and 16 touchdowns last fall. “I like the staff. ” Georgia’s Bulldogs have compiled a 43-4-1 record with four major bowl appearances since the turn of the decade. It’s also the school that built an offense around Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker. Bill Mallory, Indiana’s new head coach, and Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler both talked with Tate this week in an effort to have him join their squad. Mallory, who emphasizes the I-formation, craves a back with Tate’s running ability.
"He’d carry the ball 28 or 30 times a game down here,” said one source close to the IU staff. Indiana has 29 scholarships available with plans to give 26 to high school seniors and three to junior college transfers. As of Monday, the Hoosiers had received verbal commitments from 22 recruits. Mallory, who took over when Sam Wyche left for the Cincinnati Bengals in late December, concentrated his recruiting in Indiana and Illinois. “Without blowing smoke,” Mallory said last week, “I do think we have made some good headway.”

At Purdue, Coach Leon Burtnett has heard verbal commitments from 25 players. If he signs all of them this week, he will have fulfilled his goal. “We’re getting the type of kid we need for positions we needed help with next year,” Burtnett said. “I think there are four or five kids who might give us immediate help.” A running back rated high on Purdue’s wish list when the recruiting campaign began. And, Burtnett said, “We definitely got one of the good ones” in a player from Georgia who he declined to identify. The Boilers have received
commitments from five Indiana high school players. Purdue was expecting to sign lineman Todd Tyree of Lafayettte Jeff, kicker John Pawlus of Highland, Tim Walker of Chesterton, tailback-linebacker Tony Grant of Jeffersonville pnd wide receiver Troy Burgess of New Castle. Pawlus, Walker and Burgess were all membei-s of AP’s Class AAAA All-State first-team. Notre Dame isn’t planning io sign any in state players. But Coach Gerry Faust said Monday he has received 11 verbal commitments from high school seniors around the nation. *
