Bishop Fulcher funeral Wednesday at Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Funeral services for the Most Rev. George A. Fulcher of the Lafayette Roman Catholic Diocese will be held next Wednesday in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Fulcher died Wednesday in a fiery car crash north of Rockville. The Tippecanoe County coroner said Thursday that Fulcher probably did not suffer a heart attack before he died of smoke inhalation. Diocesan officials announced Thursday that services for Fulcher will begin at noon Wednesday, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Fulcher’s body will lie in state from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday m the cathedral, where at 8 p.m. the Mo6t Rev. Edward T. O’Meara of the Indianapolis Archdiocese will celebrate a Mass, Mary Ann Loepker, diocesan secretary in Lafayette, said. A memorial Mass is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Fulcher’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio, ; Mrs. Loepker added. ; Fulcher, 61, was installed as the fourth bishop of the Lafayette Diocese last April, succeeding Bishop Raymond J. ; Gallagher, who retired in October 1982. Before moving to Indiana, Fulcher had spent his career in the Columbus Diocese since his ordination in 1948. Parke County authorities said Fulcher was northbound on U.S. 41 eight miles north of Rockville about 1:25 p.m. Wednesday when the accident occurred. A spokesman said the bishop’s car veered off the right side of ; the road, became airborne, sailed over an embankment, landed upside down 10 feet from the roadway and burst into flames.
Nebraska asking us to sin, wives of jailed men declare
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A group of Louisville, Neb., wives whose husbands were jailed in November for contempt of court say the state of Nebraska “is asking us to sin.” Their husbands had refused to answer questions during a • court hearing about their involvement with Faith Christian School, an uncertified Christian school operated by Faith Baptist Church. The wives contend that Nebraska officials are asking them to sin by ordering them to take their children out of the school. “If we give that right, we are saying the state has a higher power” than Jesus Christ, said
U.S. may get painting of Jesus
LONDON (AP) A painting of the crucifixion of Jesus will leave for California in July after more than a century in Britain unless $2.7 million is raised through public donations to keep it. Once owned by a Scottish earl, the early 14th-century work by Duccio di Buoninsegna is at the heart of the latest dilemma facing Britain’s state art collections in their confrontation with the wealthy Getty Museum in Malibu, Calif. The name of the seller remains a secret, but London art dealer Hugh Leggatt told The Associated Press Wednesday: “There is no question at all that Malibu is where it’s going.’’ The California museum has more than $1 million a week to spend on works of art under the will of billionaire U.S. oilman J. Paul Getty, the world’s richest man when he died in England in 1976. Under U.S. federal tax laws,
Two travelers attempted to save the bishop, who was trapped inside, but flames drove them back, Tippecanoe County Sheriff D. Michael Eslinger said. “They just had to stand there and watch it burn,” he added. Parke County Coroner Dr. Michael T Berger said an autopsy showed the bishop died from imoke inhalation. As the bod; was burned beyond recognition, identification was confirmed through medical records, Berger said. Charles J. Schisla, communications director for the Indianapolis archdiocese, said the bishop had undergone heart bypass surgery within the past two years and said it was possible he may have suffered a heart attack. The coroner, however, discounted that theory after the autopsy. Fulcher, who would have celebrated his 62nd birthday on Monday, was en route to Lafayette after attending a meeting of Indiana religious superiors at St. Mary-of-the-Woods near Terre Haute. He addressed the group on the bishops’ pastoral letter on war and peace. Monsignor William Higi, chancellor of the diocese and highest ranking diocesan official, said six consultors had been named and would select one of their number to be administrator of the diocese until a new bishop is named by Pope John Paul 11. The consultors are: the Rev. Charles Kline, St. Ambrose Church in Anderson; the Rev. Kenneth Bohlinger, Sacred Heart Church, Fowler ; the Rev. Leo Piguet, St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Carmel; the Rev.
Julie Nolte, whose husband, Larry, is in jail. Though their children did not appear at the Monday news conference, they traveled to Indianapolis with their mothers. Some were visiting classes at the Indianapolis Baptist Temple school. The church provided gifts and clothing for the wifes and their children. The Rev. Greg Dixon, pastor of the temple, and several church member s were among hundreds from across the nation who went to Louisville to demonstrate support of Faith Baptist pastor the Rev. Everett Sileven, and the church’s stand. The state of Nebraska has enacted legislation requiring all
85 percent of the museum’s $65 million annual income must be spent because the museum is a tax-free foundation. It would have to start paying taxes if it did not get rid of the money. The museum has already scooped up at least SSO million worth of art works in Europe, dismaying museum curators unable to match its fabulous spending power.

The consultors were chosen at a meeting of priests being held this week at the St. Joseph Motherhouse in Tipton. Fulcher had planned to meet with the clergy in Tipton Thursday. Before being named bishop of the Lafayette Diocese, he was auxiliary bishop of the Columbus, Ohio, diocese. Fulcher served as spiritual leader for more than 86,000 Roman Catholics in 64 parishes in the Columbus Diocese. He was named by Archbishop John Roach, former president of the National Council of Catholic Bishops, to serve on a committee of five to write the pastoral letter on war and peace, “The Challenge of Peace: God’s Promise and Our Response.” That document was approved by the nation’s Roman Catholic bishops last May in Chicago. He was educated at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Columbus. He was named auxiliary to Bishop Edward Herrmann in Columbus, Ohio, in 1976. He did graduate work in journalism, English and education at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and postgraduate studies in theology in Rome from 1949 until 1951. He received the degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology in October, 1951, from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He served churches in Newark, Ohio, and Columbus, Ohio.
schools, including church schools, to submit to state certification and approval of administrators and teachers and to comply with “rules and regulations of the State Depart ment of Education.” Silven and members of his church chose to continue educating their children “in obedience to God” instead of the state, the wives said. Bonnie Glenn, wife of James Glenn and mother of three, predicted that teacher certificates would not be the only thing the state would demand. “There would be a whole list of regulations we would have to start following,” she said. “We wanted to draw the line before it started.”
The crucifixion paintinf became news last month witi an announcement by Arts Minister Lord Gowrie that he was delaying its export for seven montlis to give British museums a chance to buy it. “All we can do is hold up the export and in this case, if the money isn’t forthcoming by midnight on July 16, then it goes.”

Moonies in Gloucester As long as they don't buy more property, the furor appears calmed
C.1984N.Y. Times GLOUCESTER, Mass. Three years ago this fishing town was rife with rumors about “the Moonies,” as followers of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon are known to outsiders. Members of Moon’s Unification Church had bought prime waterfront property here, and the worried talk was that they were going to take over Gloucester and its fishing industry. Now the town seems to have accepted the Unification Church members, however grudgingly, and many local lobstermen bring their catch to the International Seafood Co., owned and operated by Unification Church members for five years. “People are getting to know that we’re not robots or zombies,” said Greg Dishman, sales manager at the lobster plant. “We’re real people like anyone else.” While townspeople have

made it clear they will not allow proselytizing, at least Moon church members are no longer the main topic of conversation in this town of 27,000. In a recent mayoral election the subject never came up. In 1980 the Unification Church, using an intermediate buyer, acquired a former Roman Catholic nursing home and then purchased Bob’s Clam Shack, a popular take-out restaurant, at a bank auction. The mayor, Leo Alper, said, “I felt we were being invaded. ’ ’ Last Monday, on the final day of his administration, he signed an agreement with the church ending a long court battle. The mayor fought the church’s expansion most of his eight years in office. The agreement regulates the use of the former Cardinal Cushing Villa, the disused nursing home the church purchased for sl.l million in 1980. mistrust and suspicion; townspeople feared the church would use the mansion to house Unification Church fishermen brought in for the summer tuna season. Now called Morning Garden, the mansion overlooking Freshwater Cove will be used as a religious retreat center, with a limited residence capacity, according to the agreement. Under the agreement, the church will pay the town $25,000 a year for municipal services, in lieu of taxes. The other Unification-affiliated properties in town, the lobster plant, the restaurant, now called the New One Restaurant, and a house, are owned by separate corporations, rather than the Unification Church, and pay taxes. Kaye Allen, assistant director for legal services for the Unification Church in New York, said the church always intended the mansion to be used as a retreat and the dispute

should never have arisen. She said the church felt the agreement was “reasonable.” When the church bought Cushing Villa, Mayor Alper said it needed to apply for a change-of-use permit and adapt the mansion to meet a building code. The church sued, asserting it was not changing the religious use of the building. It also charged the town was violating its members’ civil rights, citing inflammatory remarks by the Mayor. As Alper and others tell it, people did not object to a new religion, but they feared what the Unification Church members might do to the local economy. Gloucester, a town with strong churches and strong unions, depends on its waterfront for many jobs; Moon had unlimited funds and his own labor force, Alper said. A court injunction allowed the church to hold Sunday services in the mansion while the lawsuits were pending. The

agreement settles all these suits. In winter, only 10 to 15 Unification Church members live in Gloucester; about 10 times as many come in sum mer, with a fleet of tuna fishing boats. According to Dishman, they are learning from the ocean to solve the world’s food supply problems, and "trying to support and accomplish God’s kingdom on earth ” But as long as the church does not buy more property, which Mrs. Allen said it does not have immediate plans to do, most people seem to be resigned. “I don’t think they can affect the town now,” a more subdued Alper said recently. “They don ’ t bother a nybody. ’ ’ STAINED GLASS ROCHESTER, N.Y.
