Olympic dream Hoosier hopes for bobsled team berth at Lake Placid
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Dick Nalley, the only Indianapolis resident with a shot at making the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team, returned home for Christmas after six weeks of bobsled training in Europe, a little less sure of his chances. Although Nalley’s two-man and four-man bobsleds ran first or second in all the recent U.S. time trials and practice races, experience and athletic ability may not be enough to eisure a spot on the American tei m. “It’s getting a lot >iice auto racing,” Nalley explained. “The way it works is that the driver of a sled puts his team together and then either buys the sled himself or finds a corporate sponsor. To buy and modify a sled can cost as much as $30,000. “My driver on both the twoman and four-man sleds, Bobby Hickey, lined up Leader Sports Goggles as a sponsor and they bought us a brand new sled that could compete with anyone.”
Wittman may have found niche in Hawks' lineup
ATLANTA (AP) - Indiana’s Moot-6 Randy Wittman, firstround draft choice of the Atlanta Hawks, may have finally found a place on the team. Wittman was taken out of his small forward position last week and moved to shooting guard after the waiver of veteran guard Armond Hill.

But, a couple of months ago, the company went bankrupt and had to sell the sled right out from under Nalley’s team. “As a result, we’re now using a 4-year-old sled, and while we were first or second fastest all through our European trip, the other American sleds are catching up with us quickly,” Nalley said. “I’m trying to keep my confidence up in hopes they won’t be able to close the gap in the next few weeks, but it’s going to be very close.” Nalley leaves Thursday for Lake Placid, N.Y., where the final competition for berths on the Olympic two-man bobsled team will be held Jan. 2-9 and for the four-man team Jan. Ilia. Two sleds will be selected for each event. Nalley and Hickey were members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. Nalley’s sled finished fifth that year, the best Olympic showing by an American bobsled team in a quarter of a cen-
At small forward, Wittman, a product of Indianapolis Ben Davis High School, hadn’t exactly led the National Basketball Association in rebounds. And besides, the Hawks drafted him to shoot. “I know how good he’s gonna be,” said Hawks Coach Mike Fratello. “He’s got a green light

tury. If he makes the 1984 Olympic squad, it may be Nalley’s last participation in the sport. When his sled crashed while going about 80 miles an hour during the 1983 World Championships at Lake Placid, he injured his left knee and two operations were needed to removed 13 bone chips. The knee locked up on me in Europe and gave me some trouble, but I think I can pamper it along for a few more months and then maybe give it a permanent rest,” said the 28-year-old Nalley. After stops in West Germany and Austria the last sue weeks, Nalley and about two dozen other U.S. bobsled hopefuls were able to practice extensively on the new track in Sarajevo, Yugslavia, where the Olympic competition will be held in mid-February. “It’s a brand new course and really fast,” Nalley said. “After
here. If it’s a good shot, we want him to take it. I want him to get into his game and take the shot he has.” Wittman intends to do just that. “I think that’s my strong suit, shooting the ball,” he said. “That’s what they got me for. If the shot is there, I’m going to

the fourth turn it’s like jumping off a cliff. It just goes straight down. “On the Lake Placid track, you don’t hit 90 miles an hour until turn 12. At Sarajevo, you’re going that fast by turn five. But even though it’s fast, there weren’t that many injuries during our practice. A couple of broken shoulders and a concussion but nothing serious.” While Nalley was impressed with the Sarajevo track, he wasn’t as excited about the town or the country hosting the 1984 Winter Games. “We were met at the border by soldiers with guns, and that was about the highlight of our stay there,” Nalley said. “It looks like they tore up half the town to get ready for the Olympics, and the air pollution was so bad we had to go into the mountains to jog.” All that said, he’s still hoping hard for a return visit.
