Help sought for Jones School
“RSVP Reflections,” submitted by: Thelma Burkhardt, assistant RSVP director The RSVP has been contacted by Sara Lane, a parent at Jones Elementary School, asking volunteers to become involved in a program they are starting at Jones. It will be called “Fun Friday.” This will be a great opportunity for older people in the community to share past experiences and “this was the way it was done when I was your age” skills (churning butter, making corn husk dolls, braiding rag rugs, making furniture, chair caning, etc). Or maybe you have slides or pictures of a trip you have taken. Whatever it is, and the ideas are endless, you will have an interested audience. THERE ARE SO MANY things that can be shared with this age group, stories to be told that will be lost forever if not told now. Why don’t you call the RSVP office, 653-3011, and add your name to the list? Transportation will be provided by the school. At this writing “Breakfast With Santa” for 1983 will be completed and in many ways it was highly successful. Plans for next year are being discussed, and it is expected to be even better in 1984. EXPANDING THE HOURS for groups of children to come in during the week will be considered, along with a different plan for serving breakfast. After helping with breakfast last year and again this year the RSVP staff is happy to report that Jo Hughes is now an RSVP volunteer. Welcome aboard Jo, now your many hours can be recorded. *•* RECENTLY FIVE LOCAL volunteers traveled to Terre Haute to help put the Emergency Meals Boxes together. These boxes, containing five complete meals of nonperishable food, are to be used in case of bad weather and the Nutrition Program participants cannot get out. Donna Busch, Area 7 Nutrition Program Director, had Jane Layman, Lorene Allee, Robert and Annabell Swick and Betty Willis in mind when she said, “Volunteers have been an integral part of our program, and because of them these big projects are possible. ” The local nutrition site has many devoted volunteers and without their daily help it would be impossible to serve a warm meal to the people at the site and to those who are homebound. OFTENTIMES, IN THE winter months it is difficult to find people to deliver meals to the homebound. Due to illness, vacations or ( driving conditions, it is panic time in the RSVP office when noon time arrives and there is a need for a driver or helper (takes the meals to the door). Everyone is aware of how important this assignment is and if you would be willing to assist once in awhile, please call the RSVP office, 653-3011.

They will start playing at 7 p.m. and plan to have a party afterward. Anyone interested in staying for the party is asked to please bring finger foods. For those of you who enjoy euchre, this is a great way to bring in the new year. *»* THE SOCIAL SECURITY office has a representative at the Senior Center one day each month. Dec. 20 is Social Security day this month. If you have any problems, questions or need to sign up for Social Security, this is a good opportunity to talk to them. You can also call the representatives while they are at the Center. Just dial 653-8606 and ask for the Social Security representative. The staff wants to take this opportunity to again thank those who helped in any way with “Operation Toys.” AT THE TIME OF THIS writing, toys have been supplied to 90 Putnam County children. This is far more than ever dreamed possible when the project started. Thank you to all the wonderful people for opening your hearts and giving so that these children won’t go without Christmas. You have really shown what the spirit of Christmas is all about. ••• SENIOR ACITIVITY SCHEDULE Tuesday, Dec. 13-9:30 a.m. quilting; 11:30 a.m., lunch; 1 p.m., Banner-Graphic project.
