Nebraska confrontation

Parents vow continued fight to keep Faith Christian School open

COUNCIL BLUFFS, lowa (AP) Six women wanted by Nebraska authorities for their alleged involvement with the illegal Faith Christian School came out of seclusion, and one vowed to fight for her religious rights “until death.” The women, whose children attend the school in Louisville, Neb., and whose husbands are jailed on contempt charges in the case, held a news conference Tuesday in Council Bluffs, across the Missouri River from Omaha and out of Nebraska jurisdiction. The women, not seen publicly since warrants for their arrest were issued two weeks ago, were surrounded by about 20 of their children. They were joined by the school’s teacher, Teresa Schmidt, also named in an arrest warrant. The women told reporters they expect the seven jailed fathers to continue to refuse to testify because such statements

hearing and news conference, said he had contacted officials in the White House and the federal education and justice departments about the Faith Christian School case. “They are very concerned to have people put out from their homes on something like this ... to have women and children taken from their homes and their state and fathers jailed,” Hansen said. He would not name anyone in Washington who had expressed concern over the issue. As they did last year when the church was padlocked, hundreds of fundamentalist ministers from across the nation have descended on Nebraska, demonstrating in Plattsmouth and at the state Capitol in Lincoln. Several Nebraska lawmakers say they are planning to introduce bills in the Legislature in January in an attempt to resolve the issue.
