STEVEN BOCHCO 'You gotta watch'
People in the news 'Hill Street'plot quietly thickens LOS ANGELES (AP) “Who Shot J.R.?” the producers of “Hill Street Blues” left viewers asking the question: Did Lt. Howard Hunter, the show’s militaristic SWAT-team cop, commit suicide after aiming a gun at his head? But a question perhaps more important for NBC is: Will the cliffhanger provide a happy outcome to the ratings battle between “Hill Street” and CBS’ “Knot’s Landing?” NBC won’t talk about the plot and a network executive denied Friday it was a ratings ploy for the Emmy-winning police drama, which has trailed CBS’ soapy “Dallas” spinoff all season. During Thursday night’s episode, it was revealed that Hunter, played by actor James Sikking, acted as an unwitting go-between in a police bribery incident years ago. Other characters on the show assured Hunter it was only a minor incident, but the ramrod-straight Vietnam veteran felt he had compromised his family’s honor. At the end of the program, Hunter penned a farewell note, put a gun to his head and said: “Come on, be a man about it. I love you, mom.” The screen went black and a shot was heard. “I can’t say anything,” Steven Bochco, co-creator and executive producer, said Friday. “The material speaks for itself.” Will the solution be revealed next week? Bochco said, “You gotta watch.” “If it was a ratings ploy we would have publicized it,” Gene Walsh, NBC’s vice president of press for the West Coast, said Friday. “For instance, when Joyce Davenport (Veronica Hamel) and Capt. Frank Furillo (Daniel J. Travanti) got married last year there was no publicity. It was just part of the unpredictability of the show. “Part of the viewer’s enjoyment of the show is that unpredictability,” Walsh said. “Hill Street Blues” also must deal with the death of Michael Conrad, who played Sgt. Phil Esterhaus. Conrad died of cancer on Nov. 22. The first episode without Conrad will be telecast on Jan. 12. In that show Lt. Henry Goldblume, played by Joe Spano, will take over Esterhaus’ duties at roll call. He will explain his absence by saying, “Sarge is in for a checkup,” but there has been no decision on how to handle further episodes. NEW YORK (AP) Ten years after she stopped production on her last television series, Lucille Ball says she misses the crazy character she created. “I like Lucy very much, and I really do miss her,” Miss Ball, 72, said in an interview. Her shows “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy” are still seen by 500,000 viewers in 80 countries through syndication. Despite her extensive TV experience, she said she was “tongue-tied” when she appeared on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight” show and was “a nervous wreck” on a recent special celebrating Bob Hope’s 80th birthday. Miss Ball made her comments for an article to be published in January’s Ladies Home Journal. In the interview, she said her ex-husband, Desi Amaz, “was much smarter than anyone thought. He was a great showman, a great businessman, a fantastic entrepreneur, and I loved watching the executives finding that out. “I was very proud of him.... I still am. He built an empire. It was unfortunate that he also likes to let things fall apart. But there are a lot of people like that. They build and they destroy,” she added. • KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Generosity from Kansas couples and businesses is making a wish come true for a young cancer patient who wants to see singer Neil Diamond in concert. “It’s unbelievable,” said Jacquelyn Manzi, 17, of Webster, Mass. “I can’t wait. It’s something I’ve been waiting for. I‘m so happy.” Peggy and Clark Mayers of Gardner, Kan., read about her Sunday in a newspaper story about a Massachusetts organization called A Wish Come True Inc., which tries to grant wishes to seriously ill children. The organization was looking for free tickets to a Neil Diamond concert for Jacquelyn, who was diagnosed as having leukemia in March. The Mayers offered two extra tickets they had purchased for a Dec. 13 concert here. A Wish Come True will provide the airplane tickets. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) John Anderson, the former Illinois congressman who staged an independent bid for president in 1980, says he isn’t running for anything now. “At this point in time, I am not," Anderson said Thursday at a meeting of the Nebraska Association of County Officials. “I don’t think the country at this point suffers from a lack of political candidates.” However, he pushed his recently formed National Unity Party and his concept of “a system of world law,” which he said should include some kind of international peacekeeping force.
