Dear Abby

DEAR ABBY: Recently, my husband and I had our first child, which happens to be my parents’ first grandchild. Two months before I was due, my mother called and said she wanted to be with me during the delivery. (She and Dad live 1,200 miles away.) I thanked her and said that I preferred that she wait until the baby was at least 2 weeks old. She pouted, her main concern being, “What will I tell my friends?” After the baby was born, I called to tell her and Dad that they were grandparents of a healthy girl and to come in about two weeks. The very next day they flew to be with me! Maybe I had better explain that my mother and I were never close. She is a perfectionist who found something

wrong with everything I ever did. I really love her, but we can’t get along. Mom and Dad stayed at our small home for eight days. She tried to take over caring for the baby and made a total wreck of me, so I finally had to ask her to please go home and come back in a few months when things were calmer. All she could say was, “What will my friends think of me flying all that way for only eight days?” Now she’s angry with me. It’s been three weeks and she refuses to speak to me. How can I reach her, Abby? This silence is very painful. NEW MOTHER DEAR MOTHER: Write and tell her that you really love her and want to have a good motherdaughter relationship, but she must realize that even though you are her “child,” you are a grown, mature woman—and a mother yourself now—and she must treat you like an adult. Counseling (here we go again!) from an objective professional could do wonders for her. * * * DEAR ABBY: What do you think of a mother who, when she drives her kids around, never bothers to tell them to buckle their seat belts? When I say something to her about it, she says her children are “covered by prayer”—that if anything did happen to them, it would be “the will of God.” I am these children’s aunt, and I am ... DEAR WORRIED: Inform the woman that seat belts are now mandatory in most states because statistics show that they have saved many lives and prevented serious injuries. And tell her that if she fails to provide her children with seat-belt protection and something were to happen to them, she could attribute it to her negligence—not God’s will.

Heloise Gallon jugs save messy oil change clean-up

OIL CHANGE Dear Heloise: I have a great hint for us guys who change our car’s oil sometimes. I cut the top off of old plastic gallon milk jugs. I then drain the used oil into these. It works great! You can just throw them away and nothing is wasted! Saves money and time, and no messy clean-up. Keith Pytlak ICE CUBES TRAYS Dear Heloise: Recently I had to use a wheelchair to get around and this is something that I did to make things easier for me. To fill ice cube trays, I used a teakettle to carry the water to the refrigerator. (Of course, the teakettle can be used even if you are on your feet.) Another tip I would like to pass on: While I was fixing some round rods for my kitchen curtains, my daughter found them too short for the width of my window. That’s when we decided to try putting a knitting needle in between the two parts. It extended the rod to just the right width. M.G. Porter PILLOW STUFFING Dear Heloise: If you sew and make your own throw pillows and cushions, save all the plastic bags you get from the produce department in the grocery store.

I save all I can get and have some friends save theirs for me too. I find that they are more resilient than the commercial foam and the best part is they are free. Happy sewing. A Well Wisher NYLON NET Dear Heloise: The other evening in a posh restaurant, I saw something that may be a new use for nylon net. When my order of fish arrived, half a lemon was prettily tied in pale blue net. When I squeezed the juice over the fish, no seeds fell on the fish and no one, including myself, was squirted with lemon juice. Dinalda Pennell ★ * * Well, it seems our nylon net is turning up everywhere, isn’t it. Heloise SEAL A MEAL Dear Heloise: For all of you bag-sealer owners, I have found a great idea. Seal mustard and ketchup in the bags. Seal the lines lengthwise in the bag, then fill with ketchup, mustard or anything else needed. Then seal off top and cut them apart. Voila! Single serving packets to take on picnics and other outings. It’s really nice not to have to tairp the whole jar. Connie
