Parents primarily responsible for sex education: Vatican
VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican has issued a major statement on sex which calls sexual relations outside marriage a “grave disorder” and urges court control of mass media to curb “permissiveness and pornography.” The Holy See also repeated its stand that parents remain primarily responsible for sex education and praised virginity for rendering “the heart more free to love God.” The teachings are contained in a document called ‘‘Educational Guidance in Human Love.” It is the product of a study initiated by Pope John Paul II and conducted by the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education. The 36-page manual is designed for use as an outline for sex education and guidance for the world’s more than 790 million Roman Catholics.

Ex-Mormons attack teachings of church
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - For a century and a half, Mormon missionaries have preached their version of the Gospel of Jesus Christ aggressively, persuading converts to abandon mainstream Christianity. But now a group of former Mormons who consider the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-day Saints a threat to the salvation of good Christian souls is sending out missionaries of its own. Jim Witham, asistant director of Saints Alive, says the group is fueled by a constant flow of disillusioned Mormons and “will not dwindle away until the Mormon Church repents of its idolatry.” Saints Alive is the largest of a number of groups of Mormon detractors who believe they are called by God to “bring Mormons back to the Jesus of the Bible,” Witham said. “The secondary thrust is to acquaint Christianity with the

We ask only that we be judged by our fruits.” Mormonism and mainstream Protestantism have been at odds from the faith’s beginnings in 1830. Founder Joseph Smith claimed God and Jesus Christ commanded him in person in 1820 not to join any existing religion because they all were in a state of apostacy. Mormons also believe the church established by Smith is the same as that set forth by Jesus Christ in his lifetime and Christ has guided the church through revelations to its 11 presidents since Smith. Church spokesman Don LeFevre attempts to place Saints Alive in a historical perspective, saying the church “has had opposition for 153 years. It will always have opposition.”
