Dear Abby
Teen-ager offers 10 tips on rearing kids
DEAR ABBY: The younger generation was asked to submit 10 tips on how to be a good kid, right? Well, I’m a 15-year-old girl who put together 10 tips on how to be a great mom. Here they are: 1. Don’t yell at your kids in front of everyone. (Wait until you get home.) 2. Don’t compare your kids to other siblings. (“Joe never did that at your age” and “Karen always got A’s in math”) 3. If your teen-agers are at a party, roller rink or the movies, and the curfew is 11 p.m., don’t run in screaming at 11:05 to tell them they’re late. 4. Don’t take things away for the wrong reason. Example: If your son didn’t mow the lawn, don’t take away his concert ticket; make him mow the lawn. 5. Don’t make your kids wear clothes they hate. It’s embarrassing to be different from their friends. 6. If you don’t like your kids’ friends, don’t try to keep them apart. It will just make them more determined to get together. 7. Don’t snoop around in your kids’ rooms, reading diaries or personal letters. (How would you like them to do that to you?) 8. If your children have messy rooms, don’t tidy them up—let them do it, and if they don’t, they will have to live in them—not you. 9. Don’t say “yes” to something one day and “no” the next. It’s embarrassing for us to tell our friends that Mom has changed her mind. 10. Tell your children that you love them. They need to hear those words. TERRI ON LONG ISLAND * * * DEAR ABBY: The holidays are closing in. Please ask your readers not to send magazine subscriptions as gifts without first checking to see if they are desired or perhaps duplicates. My mailbox is cluttered with such. Later come the
Hints from Heloise
Checking garage sales barometer for pricing goods
DEAR HE IGISE: We are retiring and moving out of state so we plan to sell our furniture. I would like to know if you or any of your readers know how one figures out how much to sell household items for. Is there a rule of thumb? Lucy Burns * * ★ I don’t know if there is a general rule of thumb but you could check out used furniture stores and garage sales to give you an idea of prices of used furniture. Also, look at new furniture and compare the prices. If you have antique or very good furniture I would suggest you contact a furniture appraiser for information regarding price. But remember, an appraiser will charge a fee. Heloise BROILING PAN Dear Heloise: One of my dreaded tasks is doing dishes, especially the broiler pan. My husband had a brainstorm. Cover the bottom of the pan with approximately one-fourth inch of water before broiling. Presto! Clean-up is a breeze and the steam helps tenderize the meat. Colorado Springs

EXTRA SET OF KEYS Dear Heloise: It took only one experience of locking myself out of my car to get an extra set of car keys. I have had to use it several times since. An extra advantage is that when I leave my car to be parked or repaired I can give the attendant the extra set so I don’t have to give him my whole set of keys. A Constant Reader * * * I agree with you about carrying an extra set and especially about handing out only the car keys without your home or office keys on the ring. Copies can be made so easily and why tempt someone. Heloise WRINKLE FREE Dear Heloise: To remove wrinkles in clothes when you’re traveling, dampen them and turn your hair dryer on high and all the wrinkles will come out. This is also great at home for fast pressing. G. Tate NO HURT FEELINGS Dear Heloise: When my daughter turned the age where she wanted to pick out her own clothes and dress herself, she was coming up
follow-ups asking me to re-subscribe to magazines I didn t want in the first place. A subscription to the daily newspaper or one’s hometown weekly is a welcome gift. It bothers me to know that a well-meaning friend has spent money on a gift that is unread, then tossed out. L. IN SEATTLE DEAR L.: I read you. And I hope my readers read you (and me), too. * * * DEAR ABBY: Is it characteristic of all old men to talk back to the TV? It is most upsetting because when my husband watches TV, it sounds like there are three people in the living room—when it’s only him. When I am talking on the phone, the party I’m talking to always asks, “Do you have company?” I’m ashamed to admit it’s just my husband talking to the TV. Abby, is my husband senile, or is this a form of insanity? Don’t use our name. He is retired and everybody thinks he’s normal. TALKER’S WIFE DEAR WIFE: He may be perfectly all right, so unless you have other reasons to question your husband’s mental well-being, don’t worry about it. Thank your lucky stars you have a man who’s alive, occupied and entertained. But it might be good for him to get out of the house and talk to some “real” people occasionally. * * * (If you put off writing letters because you don’t know what to say, send for Abby’s complete booklet on letter-writing. Send $2 and a long, stamped (37 cents), self-addressed envelope to Abby, Letter Booklet, P.O. Box 38923, Hollywood, Calif. 90038.)
with some horrible color combinations. To help her learn what went together and not hurt her feelings, I used clip clothespins to hold together coordinated tops and slacks, etc. Worked great and no hurt feelings. Sheryn Green •k ★ * I bet she is so proud of herself. Thanks, Mom. Heloise TREAT FOR FEET Dear Heloise: Remember the old saying: “ If your feet hurt, you hurt all over.” We really abuse our feet and 1 have a handy hint that will soothe those tired toes. In the evening, pamper your feet by soaking them in warm, sudsy water. After you dry them, spread on some petroleum jelly and massage the entire foot in a circular motion. This really gives your feet a wonderful feeling and improves circulation. I sleep with the petroleum jelly on my feet. I just put on an old, clean pair of socks. I really have happy feet. E.T. * * * r bet you do! Heloise REFRIGERATOR DOORS Dear Heloise: You will save both time and energy if you make sure when buying a refrigerator that the door opens next to a counter top. You can open the door once and remove the items you • need all at one time.

Many refrigerators are manufactured so the door can be changed to either right or left. Sure saves a lot of opening and closing if the door is on the correct side for your kitchen. Mildred M. Post PATTERN TIP Dear Heloise: I purchased some large manila envelopes from an office supply store to keep my patterns in. I cut the pattern envelope on one side, the top and bottom. Then I spread the pattern envelope on the manila envelope and taped it in place. I also used the back side of the envelope to make notations of any adjustments or whatever. The convenience and time saved is great. I have the pattern picture and instructions on the same side and no more fat, lumpy little pattern packages. Joyce L. Byrne * * * Your idea will help us avoid the frustration of trying to get the pattern back into those small envelopes. No more lost pieces because the pattern envelope split. You are a doll! Heloise * * ★ Have a favorite hint you’d like to share? There are thousands of people out there waiting to hear it and Heloise is the one who can pass it on. Write to Heloise, P.O.
