Wabash nips Millikin at free throw line By The Associated Press Wabash edged Millikin 70-68 as Mark Lee nailed two free throws with 18 seconds left Tuesday night. In other Hoosier college basketball action Anderson fell to Findlay 81-55, Hanover was a 69-64 loser to Thomas More and St. Francis topped Bethel 84-79. In Bloomington, Indiana recovered from a dozen points behind and defeated Notre Dame 80-72. Wabash’s Little Giants, now 3-0, trailed 58-46 with just over eight minutes left. Wabash finally pulled ahead 67-66 on a 15foot jumper by Phil Elo with just under a minute and a half to play. Senior forward Merlin Nice led the winner with 27 points. Eddie Taylor topped Millkin, 1-1, with 20 points. Hanover was in front 54-47 midway through the second half, but Thomas More fashioned a 17-4 spurt, led by Duane Haag who scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. Kevin Bell with 12 points led Hanover, 3-4. Randy O’Dell paced Findlay with 18 points in the HoosierBuckeye Conference opener for both schools. Greg Verhoff added 16 points and Steve Buddelmeyer 12 for the Oilers. For Anderson, 3-2 overall, Greg Perkins and Tim Alfieri had 15 and 10 points respectively. Findlay shot 56 percent from the field and led in rebounds 13-26. Smith worried about third win, not 500th CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Coach Dean Smith, whose second-ranked North Carolina basketball team could give him his 500th victory in this weekend’s Stanford Invitational Tournament, is quick to downplay his own importance and that of the statistic. “I haven’t won a game at all. I’ve just happened to be the coach of some good teams,” he said Tuesday. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re 2-0.” The Tar Heels face Fordham in the opening round Friday night in Palo Alto, Calif. Should they win, Smith’s bid for No. 500 will come against either Stanford or San Jose State. Smith, head coach at Chapel Hill for 23 years, started the year seventh among active NCAA Division I coaches with 4% victories. DePaul’s Ray Meyer has 698 victories following a 73-58 whipping of Northern Illinois last Saturday. If the Blue Demons stop Ohio University Wednesday, Meyer’s shot at 700 also will come Saturday night against Illinois State. Winston-Salem State Coach Clarence “Bighouse” Gaines became the fifth collegiate coach to reach 700 victories last weekend when the Rams downed Barber-Scotia 100-72. Nothing in Smith’s philosophy has changed in terms of personal achievements. Last season’s 28-8 record gave him a collegiate record of 13 straight 20-win seasons. Olympic baseball games are sold out LOS ANGELES (AP) lt appears that the first appearance of baseball as an official Olympic Games event will be a success, at least from the standpoint of attendance. The baseball finals of the 1984 Olympic Summer Games at Dodger Stadium are sold out and the 16-game tournament could draw more than 350,000 fans, officials said Tuesday. Between 260,000 and 280,000 advance tickets have been sold, according to Charles Cale, vice president in charge of sports for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee. The sport of baseball was limited to one-game exhibitions in seven previous Olympics. But the 1984 tournament—an official event “will be the greatest single event to promote the sport of baseball,” said Rod Dedeaux coach of the United States baseball team. Teams from six countries, including the host U.S. team, will compete over eight consecutive days in double-headers beginning July 31.

76ers find another way to

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Sometimes it’s hard to believe the world champion Philadelphia 76ers have the best record in the National Basketball Association. But, then with the game on the line coach Billy Cunningham’s club seems to reach back and do what’s neccessary to put the game in the win column. One of those cases was Tuesday when the 76ers failed to score a field goal for 18 consecutive possessions during the final 8% minutes of the second quarter. The 76ers, who scored only nine points in the period, then rallied for a 98-96 victory over the Indiana Pacers. The 76ers trailed 53-40 at halftime. A Clint Richardson field goal gave Philadelphia a 37-35 advantage with 8:32 left in the

second period. But, the Pacers moved ahead with 15 unanswered points as the 76ers were limited to only three free throws for the rest of the period. Herb Williams had shot Indiana into the lead by scoring 16 points in a 204 Indiana spurt and had 18 of his 27 points in the quarter. But, with the game on the line Moses Malone hit six straight free throws to finish with a game high 28 points. The 76ers, now 12-3 in defense of their championship, scored their fifth consecutive victory after trailing by 13, 60-47, with 8:26 left in the third quarter. The 76ers got 20 second half points from Malone, who gave them the lead for good at 93-92 with 1:34 remaining on a pair of free throws.. Malone’s final free throws gave the 76ers a 95-92 ad-

They took us out of our offense and we didn’t react well,” said Indiana Coach Jack McKinney after his club’s 11th straight loss to Philadelphis here. “It’s the same doggone thing that’s happened to us before. “There’s no excuse. It’s just a matter of experience. I guess we just tightened up,” he added. Philadelphia’s final charge began after Clark Kellogg made a free throw to put Indiana up by seven, 90-83, with 4:31 remaining. Andrew Toney also made a; significant contribution to the comeback, hitting for 16 of his; 25 points after the intermission.. “We know we’re not playing well,” Toney said. “But, I don’t know the reason. But, if we’re not playing well this is the time of the year to be doing it, rather than in the playoffs.” Indiana, an overtime loser to Philadelphia here in its home opener earlier this season, dropped to 4-12.
