Cougars going to use running game
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ROACHDALE-With only two returning lettermen and one player touching six-foot the North Putnam High School varsity basketball team is rolling the dice and going for broke. When first-year coach Bill Brothers puts the Cougars on the court Friday night against Cloverdale in the 6:45 p.m. opening game of the Putnam County Tournament they will be looking to run. The coach hopes the discipline of the past combined with the new freedom will create an effective full court game. “WE COULD BE a good

last year’s 2-19 club. Junior Ed Lasley, who did not play last year, is North’s tallest player at 6-2V2 and after him no other Cougar reaches six-feet. “If we’re going to do anything at all, without size, we’re going to have to hit the basket,” Brothers said of the biggest if” in North’s season. WEHRMAN IS THE only proven varsity scorer. As a sophomore he led the Cougars with a 10 points per game average, reaching double figures 11 times with a high of 14 points coming four times. While playing guard Wehrman had a string of six games at the end of the regular-season where he

scored in double figures, taking most of his shots from around 15 feet. Colvin is more of a floor general and will probably control the ball. Playing in all but three of North’s games as a freshman, the 5-10 guard gained a lot of experience and is expected to have a better shooting season. Also look for him to take a lot of guards inside or go against small forwards. BROTHERS HAS moved the 5-11 Wehrman to forward opposite 5-11 senior Gene Ensor. Lasley will start in the pivot and 5-11 senior Todd Bock will join Colvin in the backcourt. Since the Cougars are going to run and they are a young team, having eight sophomores among the 16 players in the var-

sity and junior varsity program combined, expect a lot of players to see time. Sophomore Darin Haler could become a starter before the sectional. “He could be pushing anyone of those kids with a guard position,” coach Brothers said. ALTHOUGH HE STANDS only 5-8, Bill Horton will back up Lasley at center. “He just works hard,” Brothers said. Tim McAfee at 5-11 will also see time on North’s front line. Sophomores A 1 Gray and Owen Copner are going to see action on both the varsity and junior varsity, as coach Brothers wants them to gain playing experience. North Putnam teams in

recent years have played a more controlled half-court game and relied a great deal on defense in low scoring games. Brothers believes in good defense, but he wants to see the scoreboard lights change more often during a game. “ILL BE VERY disappointed if we don’t average 55 to 60 points a game,” Brothers said. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m a stickler for defense. Your defense has to be static, but your defense doesn’t do any good unless you put the ball in the hole.” The former Cougar turned coach knows his team won’t be able to run every time and they will have to play a halfcourt at times. “We’ll run the passing

game,” Brothers said declining to elaborate. “Let’s just say we’re going to run something people haven’t seen for a while,” Brothers added. BUT THE KEY part of the half-court game is going to be mistakes. “I know we’re going to make mistakes with the running game,” Brothers said. “We can’t afford to make mistakes with the half-court game.” Rebounding fundamentals are also going to be important to North’s success. Brothers pointed out Cascade should have three players in the 6-4 to 6-6 range, Southmont and Crawfordsville should have 6-7
