Priest tests couples before wedding on personalities, even home budget

(c) 1983 Dallas Morning News RICHLAND HILLS, Texas Couples on their way to saying “I do” at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church already have put their marriage to a test. In addition to the standard blood tests, the couples must take personality tests and prepare a budget before the Rev. William H. Risinger Jr. will tie the nuptial knot. “It’s best that the first year not be filled with too many surprises,” said Risinger of Richland Hills, a Fort Worth suburb. The parish priest will not marry a couple.if they do not first take the Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis Profile. In his three years at St. Michael’s, Risinger has married 35 couples who agreed to take the personality test. All are still married, he said. Two couples decided not to marry after seeing the test results, he said, and one couple decided to be married elsewhere rather than take the test. Risinger said that, as far as he knew, he was the only Episcopal priest in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who regularly requires couples to take the test before he will marry them. “In the past, couples enjoyed a long courtship and were around each other enough for their company manners to wear off,” Risinger said. “Now, they get married after a brief engagement before they’ve had time to look beneath the veneer of good manners. The test gets below that veneer.” The 180-question test is administered and analyzed by Vernon Gotcher, a Hurst, Texas, marriage counselor who said he charged the couples S7O for his services. Each person answers the questions as he sees himself, then retakes the test and answers according to how he sees the other person, Gotcher said. Risinger goes over the test with each couple. “Who is going to call the shots is where I see the biggest diversity in understanding each other,” he said. “So often, the man insists on wearing the pants, but looks to his bride as ballast to keep him from making embarrassing decisions.” One couple quarreled “almost violently” when their personality tests showed both wan-

Malone frontrunner among bishops

WASHINGTON (AP) - Roman Catholic Bishop James W. Malone of Youngstown, -Ohio, is considered a likely choice as the new president of State of Israel created in 1948 The independent state of Israel was proclaimed at Tel-Aviv in 1948, ending British rule in Palestine. In 1947, the United Nations had divided Palestine into a Jewish state, an Arab state and a small international zone which included Jerusalem. Following the declaration of statehood, a war broke out between Israel and the Arab league countries. UN mediation in 1949 ended the war, which had increased Israeli holdings by about one-half.

Dr. Forbes has traveled in 38 countries and is a trustee of the University of Evansville, the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, the Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis, Franklin United Methodist Home, the United Methodist Children’s Home in Lebanon and the Indiana Council of Churches.

ted to be boss, he said, and they ended up calling off the wedding. Personality tests were not needed 50 years ago because communities were more stable, Risinger said. Couples grew up knowing each other and priests spent their entire lives in the same parish, he said. “Operating a parish today is like evangelizing a parade,” Risinger said. “They’re coming in one door and going out the other.” Risinger said his adherence to premarital counseling and testing probably stemmed from the first wedding he performed as a young priest. He said he had counseled the couple “according to the book.” On the morning of the communion service, he noticed that the groom along with most of the male guests had black eyes, cut lips and sutured heads. Risinger said he presumed all had been involved in some dreadful accident. Later, he learned that the bride’s former boyfriend had come to the rehearsal dinner and a fight had started. “A week later, the groom called to apologize and to tell me his bride had left him,” Risinger said. “That experience jaundiced me. In spite of all my efforts, without testing, there was no way I could make sure they knew what they were really getting into.” He said he believed that preparing a budget, in which each person separately lists assets and liabilities before the wedding day, can prevent surprises. “Nine months after I got married, my wife received a letter from the university saying her national teacher’s loan was due,” Risinger said, grinning. “I hadn’t known until then that the loan was part of the dowry. ” Though Risinger will not marry anyone before testing and counseling, couples still stop by the parish with blood tests and marriage licenses in hand, he said. But some are not discouraged by his refusal to read the vows, he said. Risinger recalled one anxious groom asking: “Won’t you just say a little something to tide us over the weekend?”

Improved relations difficult process

Letter marks Catholic-Lutheran progress

By KENNETH A. BRIGGS c. 1983 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK - The praise of Martin Luther by Pope John Paul II in a letter released last weekend marks another step in a careful and difficult effort to improve relations between Roman Catholics and Lutherans. Many from both churches, encouraged by the letter and the announcement that the Pope would preach in a Lutheran church Dec. 11, are waiting to see whether practical results will accrue. They have received the news gladly but emphasize that no major changes have come about and that thorny issues, such as papal infallibility and Catholic acceptance of Lutheran ordination, loom ahead. For nearly four centuries there was negligible progress toward healing the split in the church caused by the 16thcentury Protestant Reformation, which sprang from

Luther’s indictment of abuses in the Catholic Church. But in the last two decades, spurred by the modern ecumenical movement, relations have improved dramatically. In the pope’s letter, which was to Cardinal Johannes Willebrands, who heads the Vatican office on ecumenical relations, John Paul noted the 500th birthday of Luther Nov. 10 and called for a reappraisal of the Reformation leader. The pope referred to Luther as a Christian of “profound religiousness” who had been “driven by the examination of eternal salvation.” The words suggested that the father of the Reformation, who was widely scorned by Catholics as a dissolute rebel only a short time ago, had won a place of honor within the church he had defied. Catholic theologians said the pope's message resembled the revisionist picture increasingly drawn by church specialists in

Reformation studies. At the American jubilee of Luther’s birthday in Washington this week, Lutheran leaders welcomed the news from Rome but cautioned against excessive optimism. Some noted that in the past Pope John Paul sent positive signals without setting forth concerete proposals for addressing large obstacles to reconciliation. On other occasions the pope has raised hopes by reaching across church lines in a publicly striking way. Both Catholics and Protestants praise his ability to create a more fruitful climate for reaching eventual accords. But so far the pope has not recommended explicit strategies or proposed agendas for overcoming obstacles. For example, when John Paul visited Germany, the site of the Reformation, in November 1980, both Protestant and Catholic leaders hoped he would

take the opportunity to declare his acceptance of the Augsburg Confession, which summed up the Lutheran doctrine of Christian faith. Theologians from both sides had advised in favor of a Papal endorsement, convinced from their study that the Confession contained nothing inimical to Catholic teaching. But the pope balked. Again, in May 1982, on his journey to Britain, the pope made another symbolic breakthrough by joining with the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, Donald Rumcie, in a prayer service for church unity held at Caterbury Cathedral. The week before the trip, however, the pope withheld his approval of a wideranging series of agreements that had been achieved in more than a decade by an official bilateral commission of theologians from the two churches. The pope never gave reasons for his objections.

In general, Protestant and Catholic scholars have had con siderable success in reaching a common understanding, but their conclusions often lie in a state of limbo, neither officially approved nor repudiated. Over a decade, discussions have produced . statements of common understanding with reference to baptism, the Eucharist and, most recently, on Luther’s key doctrine of justification by faith. Dr John H. P Reumann, a Lutheran theologian who has long been a participant in talks, said the agreements served two functions providing resources for leaders and offering encouragement to people on the parish level whose views and practices may go far beyond approved church positions. “Often,” Dr. Reumann said, “the dialogues between the churches provide the theological undergirding for what people are already doing.”
