Defense gives 76ers 2-0 edge
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A sticky defense that shut off the Los Angeles Lakers for most of the fourth quarter saved the Philadelphia 76ers when Moses Malone, who had saved them many times before, was not around to do the job. The 76ers beat the Lakers 10393 Thursday night, rolling to a 20 advantage in the best-of-seven National Basketball Association championship series. Philadelphia held the Lakers
Giants win sixth in row; Cubs and Cards prevail
By KEN RAPPOPORT AP Sports Writer “Dodger Blue” makes Bill Laskey see red. “It really pumps me up,” says the San Francisco pitcher of the Giants’ rivalry with the Los Angeies Dodgers. The adrenaline was obviously flowing for Laskey Thursday night when he helped the Giants beat their intrastate California foes 5-3 for his sixth straight victory. “I really didn’t learn about this rivalry until last year, when I beat Fernando Valenzuela, and then I saw how our guys and the fans reacted,” said Laskey, 6-4, who pitched into the eighth inning before needing relief help from Greg Minton. Jeff Leonard slugged two home runs and Jack Clark added a solo shot to power the Giants to their sixth straight victory in Los Angeles. The loss snapped the Dodgers’ fourgame winning streak. In other National League action, it was Pittsburgh 6, Cincinnati 4; Chicago 5, Atlanta 1 and St. Louis 5, Houston 3. Rain washed out the PhiladelphiaMontreal game. Indians win on homer
By The Associated Press Charlie Leibrandt slammed a three-run homer to help the Indianapolis Indians extend their American Association winning streak to a half-dozen games. A pair of unearned runs in the last two innings sealed the Indians’ 6-5 win over Omaha. In other action Thursday night, Oklahoma City edged Louisville 9-8 in 10 innings; lowa trounced Wichita 10-4; and Denver beat Evansville 6-3. The Indians scored the winning run when Tom Lawless lived on a fielder’s choice and stole second base. Mark Gilbert bounced an infield hit up the middle, but Omaha shortstop Buddy Biancalana let the ball kick off his glove and Lawless scored. Bobby Jones, who helped tie the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth, lofted a sacrifice fly to score the winning run for the 89ers in the 10th inning of their game with the Redbirds. Oklahoma City scored three runs in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Pete Mackanin’s triple brought
to 12 points in the first 11 minutes of the fourth quarter, breaking open a close game to take a 103-90 lead with 23 seconds left. With Malone on the bench with five fouls, 7-foot-2 Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 10 of those 12 points and finished with a team-high 23. “We knew they would go to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar more, because it definitely was a mismatch with me giving up five inches,” said Earl Cureton,

runs with a sacrifice fly and two-run homer to lead Pittsburgh over Cincinnati. Easler’s sacrifice fly drove in the second run in a four-run rally in the fourth inning that gave Pittsburgh a 4-1 lead. In the sixth, Easler’s homer made it 6-1 and provided the Pirates with their eventual winning runs. Lee Tunnell, 1-1, pitched 5 1-3 innings to gain the victory. Two relievers finished up, including Kent Tekulve, who recorded his second save. The slow-starting Pirates had
home Jones for the tying run. Louisville had taken a 4-0 lead in the first with the help of a three-run homer by Mike Calise. In Wichita, Mike Diaz belted two home runs and Tom Grant had one to lift the Cubs to victory over the Aeros. Grant’s two-run homer gave lowa a 3-1 lead, and Diaz’ solo blast in the fourth made it 4-1. Wichita came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, including Butch Benton’s solo homer. Diaz hit a two-run shot in the ninth to cap the Cubs’ scoring.

a 15-21 record before Thursday night’s game. Cubs 5, Braves 1 Bill Buckner hit a two-run double and Jay Johnstone slugged a homer as Chicago defeated Atlanta behind the combined pitching of Paul Moskau and Bill Campbell. Moskau, 3-2, scattered nine hits, walked one and fanned five before needing Campbell’s relief help in the eighth, when the Braves scored on a triple by Brett Butler and a single by Rafael Ramirez. Cardinals 5, Astros 3 George Hendrick’s three-run double keyed a four-run first inning that triggered St. Louis over Houston. Tom Herr opened the game with a walk, took second on Ken Oberkfell’s single and went to third as Lonnie Smith hit into a forceout. Keith Hernandez was intentionally walked to load the bases before Hendrick stroked a two-bagger to left-center field to make it 3-0. Willie McGee followed with a double off loser Mike LaCoss, 34, to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead and their eventual winning run. Dave Von Ohlen, who relieved starter Bob Forsch in the third, gained the win -

Los Angeles, which beat Philadelphia in the finals in 1980 and last year, wants to become the first NBA team to repeat as champion in 14 years. And the 76ers, who haven’t won a championship since 1967, know the title is not yet theirs.
