LARRY BIRD: Sets Celtic record against Pacers
Bird's 53 lead revenge
POSTON (AP) Larry Bird says he hopes his record-setting 53 point performance against the Indiana Pacers will make up for the disappointment he caused his mother and old fans back in Indiana this week. \“I went out to score some points early, just hoping I could get the team started. We didn’t want a repeat performance,” Bird said Wednesday night af-ter-leading the Celtics to a 142116 trouncing of the Pacers. * *‘lt was very embarassing last night to walk into a place you should do well, with all your friends and family there, and play like that. My mother had driven two hours to be there,” Bird said, recalling the Pacers’ 130-101 triumph Tuesday.

Due to the lopsided loss, the Celtics were greeted by scattered boos from the usually friendly Boston Garden crowd. They promptly turned the ball over during their first four times down the floor. Trailing 2-0, Boston finally exploded on a 14-2 tear, including eight points by Bird, and coasted the rest of the way. By 7:02 in the second period, Bird had 24 points, more than the entire Indiana team, and the Celtics led, 50-22. Bird, whose season high had been 38 points, poured it on in the third period and scored at will on 15-foot jump shots and layups on the end of fast breaks. He finished the period with 24 points, setting a Celtic record.
Bird’s 53 points, concentrated in only 36 minutes of play, also topped Sam Jones’ regular season team mark of 51 points in 1965. It fell one short of John Havlicek’s team playoff record of 54. Indiana tried to key on Bird, but rookie star Clark Kellogg picked up four fouls by the second period and sub Marty Byrnes didn’t have much better luck. “He just ate up both of them. He was simply awesome,” Pacers Coach Jack McKinney said. “We threw a lot of different things his way to try to slow him down, but nothing worked. I just cringed every time he had the ball.”
