Walker gains 97 yards Bandits 'Stars' of USFL so far
By BRUCE LOWITT AP Sports Writer The victories are piling up for the Tampa Bay Bandits, the - losses are mounting for the New Jersey Generals and the empty seats are multiplying all around the United States Football League. Four weeks into the USFL’s ; inaugural season, the Bandits are the only unbeaten team and ; the Generals the only winless * one. “We’re having a lot of fun | playing ‘Bandit ball,’ ” Tampa * Bay quarterback John Reaves * said after returning to « Philadelphia the scene of the * downward slide of his career as * a pro and throwing aTD pass •.that triggered Tampa Bay’s 27triumph over the Stars. { Herschel Walker is 0-4 as a starter for New Jersey. He’s ; lost more games in a month as a than he lost in his entire three-year career as Georgia’s star tailback. He rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown against Boston, his best performance as a pro, and added 62 yards receiving. But -his fumble gave the Breakers’ jTim Mazzetti the chance to kick »a tie-breaking 45-yard field goal

with 2:39 to play, the gamewinning points in a 31-21 victory. In Sunday’s other games, Chicago defeated Los Angeles 20-14 and Washington beat Michigan 22-16 in overtime. On Saturday night, Birmingham downed Arizona 16-7. Tonight, Oakland visits Denver. In Philadelphia, a crowd of 18,718 showed up, less than half the 38,205 who came to see the Stars’ home opener two weeks ago. The Generals’ game drew 30,512 fans compared to last Sunday’s 53,370. In Washington, the attendance was announced as 11,414, less than one-third the 38,010 who attended their season opener three weeks ago. Chicago’s crowd was 10,936 compared to 21,949 at last week’s home opener in a nearblizzard. Birmingham’s first two home crowds were announced as 38,352 and 12,850. Saturday night’s was estimated at 5,000. Bandits 27, Stars 22 Cornerback Jeff George gave Reaves the ball, recovering Philadelphia quarterback Chuck Fusina’s fumble, and Reaves gave the Bandits their opening TD with a 33-yard pass
to Eric Truvillion. Reaves was the No. 1 draft choice of the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles in 1972. But a year later he was a benchwarmer behind Roman Gabriel and two years after that he was traded away. “It was great to win here,” he said. “I was 0-8 as a starter for the Eagles. The adrenaline was really pumping. It was something special. I was really looking forward all week to coming back here.” After Kelvin Bryant ran 35 yards for the tying score, George gave the Bandits the lead for good, intercepting Fusina and racing 22 yards for a TD. Bryant, who finished with 112 yards rushing to increase his league-leading total to 456, also caught a 38-yard pass fromreserve QB Jim Krohn in the fourth quarter for the Stars’ other touchdown. New Jersey built a 21-7 second-quarter lead on short runs by Walker and Maurice Carthon and Bobby Scott’s 10yard pass to Victor Hicks. But the Breakers rallied to a 21-21 tie, then Walker coughed up the ball, safety Joe Restic grabbed it and Mazzetti kicked his third

field goal of the game. When Scott tried to rally the Generals, he dropped the ball while stepping back to pass, Boston recovered and Tony Davis ran 10 yards for the clinching touchdown. The Generals fumbled eight times, five recovered by the Breakers. “The story of the game is very, very simple,” said New Jersey Coach Chuck Fairbanks. “We gave it away with fumbling. This team is its own worst enemy. Until we stop that, we won’t beat anybody.” Blitz 20, Express 14 George Allen has always preached defense. The Blitz practiced it against Los Angeles, recovering a fumble and intercepting two Tom Ramsey passes in the final 6te minutes to preserve the victory. “I don’t know if our budget can stand it but we gave all 40 guys a game ball,” said Allen. “The defense sucked it up at the end. We took the ball away three times. That’s the way it has to be.” Jim Fahnhorst’s recovery of a Laßue Harrington fumble set up John Roveto’s second field goal, a 24-yarder with 2:04 to play that gave Chicago its win-
ning margin, then Wally Pesuit and Eddie Brown intercepted Ramsey to kill the final chances by the Express. Kevin Long’s 1-yard run and Greg Landry’s 5-yard pass to Doug Cozen accounted for Chicago’s TDs. Ramsey passed 40 yards to Tony Boddie and 18 yards to Ricky Ellis for the Express’ points. Federate 22, Panthers 16 Kim McQuilken threw three TD passes to boost Washington into the win column. His second of the game to Joey Walters, a 23-yarder, was the gamewinner 2:43 into overtime. He also passed 8 yards to Walters and 40 yards to Mike Holmes, while Bobby Hebert of Michigan had scoring strikes covering of 33 yards to Anthony Carter and 69 yards to Derek Holloway. Novo Bojovic of the Panthers forced overtime with a 43-yard field goal on the final play of the fourth quarter. Stallions 16, Wranglers 7 Birmingham’s cozy crowd saw Scott Norwood kick firsthalf field goals of 48, 36 and 32 yards and and Cornelius Quarles sprint 39 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown to beat Arizona.
Redus best of the Reds By The Associated Press Would you believe the Big Redus Machine? That’s Ree-dus, as in rookie left fielder Gary Redus, who is being counted on to help lead the Cincinnati Reds out of the cellar and back to respectability in the National League West. Redus, 26, who has been given a starting role and the leadoff position in the Cincinnati batting order, hit his fifth spring homer Sunday, a leadoff shot in the fifth inning, as the Reds blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 in an exhibition baseball game called by rain after 5Vi innings. Another rookie, first baseman-outfielder Jeff Jones, added a two-run homer, his third of the spring, and a double and boosted his team-leading RBI total to 11. But the Reds have him ticketed for more time in the minors. Jones set a record in the Class A Midwest League last year with 42 homers. While Redus was making noises with his bat, a veteran pitcher, Doyle Alexander of the New York Yankees, was continuing to impress with his arm. Alexander, a dismal 1-7 a year ago, hurled six scoreless innings and Oscar Gamble hit a solo home run to help the Yankees defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1. Alexander gave up just two hits and struck out six without lower his spring earned run average to 0.60. In 15 innings, he has allowed only one earned run and seven hits. Andre Dawson slugged a homer and singled twice to back the six-hit pitching of Bill Gullickson and Ray Burris as the Montreal Expos blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers 30. Gullickson allowed four hits in seven innings. Bobby Clark’s two-run single with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the California Angels their seventh conseeu« v R victory, a 4-3 decision over the Oakland A’s. Chris Chambliss drove in two runs with a single and a groundout as the Atlanta Braves downed the Baltimore Orioles 52. Atlanta pitchers Pascual Perez, Terry Forster and Steve Bedrosian limited Baltimore to six hits. Bill Stein’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Texas Rangers to a 3-2 triumph over the Kansas City Royals. Stein’s homer came with two out off Danny Jackson following a double by Bobby Johnson. Mike Chris pitched three hitless innings against hardhitting Milwaukee and drove in the go-ahead run with a seven-th-inning double as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Brewers 6-2.

Two hearts. All you can do at the moment is show a preference for partner’s first suit. North’s strength is unknown he may have a minimum opening bid or extra values not yet disclosed. Two hearts shows willingness to stop at a part score, and thus indicates that the first response was based on fairly minimum values. But if partner were now to bid three hearts you should carry on to four; you would be in the happy position of having greater values than your first two bids had shown. 2. Three clubs. This invites partner to go on to game with more than a minimum opening, but he is of course not forced to bid again. In this sequence, three clubs indicates !0 to 12 points. 3. Three hearts. It would be wrong to bid only two hearts, which would represent a much weaker hand. Counting the value of the heart fit, the distribution and the 11 highcard points, you have the equivalent of an opening bid facing an opening bid which means game. Accordingly, you jump-raise rather than give partner a simple preference in hearts. Alternatively, you could respond two diamonds (forcing). 4. Three notrump. It is clear that with 13 highneard points opposite an opening bid you must undertake game, and it is likewise clear that the best chance for game lies in notrump. There is not much point to bidding two diamonds, even though this would be a forcing bid. It would suggest a distributional hand rather than the notrump type of hand you have. 5. Four clubs. Game is highly likely, and even a slam is not out of the question. The distributional factors easily justify the jump raise (forcing), although it is true there are only 12 high-card points. While three notrump could prove to be a better contract, there is no way of reaching a notrump game without sacrificing the advantages of the jump raise.
