JERRY MATHERS: Same questions People in the news $3 million fire at Jabbar's home LOS ANGELES (AP) The Beverly Glen home of Los Angeles Lakers basetball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar suffered $3 million worth of damage as fire engulfed the twostory structure early this morning, a fire official said. “There were two occupants in the house, but no injuries were reported,” fire spokesman Jim Wells said, adding that he did not know the identities of the two people. Abdul-Jabbar was with the Lakers in Boston Sunday for a game against the Celtics. The Lakers were not scheduled to play today. The 7,000-square-foot home on North Stone Canyon Road near the exclusive Bel-Air section on the west side of Los Angeles was completely involved in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after the blaze was reported at 3:44 a m.. Wells said. The cause of the fire, which was controlled at 4:25 a m., was under “routine investigation,” Wells said. • NEW' YORK (AP) “Beaver” is coming back to television this spring, with Jerry Mathers updating the kiddie role he played two decades ago. Mathers, 34, star of “Leave It to Beaver” a situation comedy that vanished from prime-time TV in 1963 after a six-year run, joined the original cast recently for a taping and homecoming. The sequel, “Still the Beaver,” picks up the family saga 20 years later in the idyllic suburb of Mayfield, where the Cleaver family grew up. In the CBS special, Mathers plays a father forced to raise his two sons alone after being deserted by his wife. “It’s nice to see all these people I haven't seen for years,” Mathers said in this week's edition of People magazine. Mathers, who was 14 when the show disappeared from the air. went on to graduate from the University of California at Berkeley with a philosophy degree, served six years in the Air National Guard, then dabbled in real estate and banking before working full-time as a rock ’n’ roll disc jockey in Anaheim, Calif Married and the father of three children. Mathers says his greatest satisfaction comes from appearing as Beaver in shopping centers, car shows and college campuses. “It’s fun that someone is even interested enough to ask me the same questions for the millionth time,” he said. m WASHINGTON Playboy magazine cover-girl Liz Wickersham, a former companion of Rep. Charles Wilson (D-Texas), is scheduled to testify this week before a federal grand jury investigating drug use by congressmen and Capitol Hill aides. Ms. Wickersham, a native of Orange, Texas, who was Miss Georgia in the 1976 Miss USA pageant, is considered by federal investigators to be a key witness because she accompanied Wilson to a Las Vegas party where drugs were said to be used. Ms. Wickersham, who has apartments in New York and Atlanta, has given federal agents a statement in which she acknowledges traveling to Las Vegas with Wilson but denies that drugs were used at the party, a source who has seen the document said. Convicted swindler Paul Brown, who made the charge two years ago in an attempt to gain leniency on fraud charges pressed by Wilson, told federal investigators that Wilson did not remove himself from the party when it became apparent cocaine was being used. Brown has not said that Wilson used drugs at the party, sources close to the investigation said. It is not knowm whether the prosecutors will question Ms. Wickersham about any activities with Wilson other than the Las Vegas trip when she appears before the grand jury Thursday. The part-time actress, who appeared on the April 1981 cover of Playboy, now hosts a once-a-week news-oriented feature show, “Lighter Side,” produced by Atlanta-based WTBS, owned by communications and sports magnate Ted Turner. THIS WEEK S CELEBRITY PEOPLE BIRTHDAY: Actor Gene Hackman, 53, actress Vanessa Redgrave, 46, and author Barbara Tuchman, 71, all celebrated Sunday, while Monday’s cake and candles belong to Secretary of the Interior James Watt, 45, and actresses Carol Channing, 60, and Suzanne Pleshette, 46. Adding another year on Thursday are former pro quarterback Bob Griese (couldn’t the Dolphins have used him Sunday?), 38, author James A. Michener, 76, and comedian Joey Bishop, 65. Actress Ida Lupino, 65, and singer Alice Cooper, 35, share Friday birthdays.
