People in the news Bryant movie project continues LOS ANGELES (AP) A movie on the life of Alabama Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant is planned, with John Wayne Jr. considered for the role of the young Bryant, a movie producer says. Larry Spangler, who announced with Bryant last July that the film would be made, said Bryant’s death Wednesday did not change plans for the movie. “We still expect to start filming between March 15 and the first of April,” Spangler said Thursday. Before Bryant’s death, he said, “we were talking to only one distributor. But now everybody is calling me. The whole world. I’ve literally got hundreds of phone messages ... My agent is negotiating around the clock.” Spangler said John Wayne Jr., the 20-year-old son of the late movie star, is being considered to play Bryant as a young adult. He declined to say who might be cast as the older Bryant. Most of the footage will be shot in Alabama, at Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, although some film will be shot in Bryant’s native Arkansas and in Texas, where Bryant coached before going to Alabama. • ANN ARBOR. .Mich. < AP) Jazz drummer Buddy Rich probably will leave the hospital within a week following a quadruple bypass heart, his doctors say. Rich checked into University of Michigan Hospitals on Friday. The operation was ordered after doctors found two of the major blood vessels of his heart "nearly totallyblocked," a spokesman said. Early today Rich was listed in satisfactory condition. He’s 65. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) Band leader Xavier Cugat, released from a clinic after spending 35 days recuperating from a heart ailment, said he was hungry for a good plate of rice, “but without salt,” in keeping with doctor’s orders. Cugat, who turned 83 on New Year’s Day, was in good spirits when he left the clinic Friday. • DRAGUIGNAN, France (AP) Brigitte Bardot did not slander a florist whom she accused of “assassinating a cat," because the French actress was acting “with sincerity," a court has ruled. Testimony later showed that it was the florist’s son who beat the cat to death after it supposedly went “crazy” when approached by a dog. Miss Bardot. 48. who has devoted much of her time to animal protection activities, confronted the woman after the incident, called her a “criminal.” and insulted her publicly, according to the suit. The court ruled the actress was misinformed about the incident but acted “on behalf of a general interest.” • The latest word from Boston, where the new musical "My One and Only" is getting ready to begin its preBroadway tryout, is that Mike Nichols has arrived on the scene and is expected to decide shortly whether he will take over as director. “My One and Only" is a largely revised version of “Funny Face," the 1927 musical by George and Ira Gershwin. The show, starring Tommy Tune and Twiggy, is scheduled to begin previews in Boston next Monday and to open Thursday.

GINGER ROGERS: Hoosierhonors INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Entertainer Ginger Rogers brought down the House at Gov. Robert D. Orr’s expense when she was named a “Sagamore of the Wabash" ir ceremonies before Indiana lawmakers. Miss Rogers, who is starring in “Miss Moffat” in Indianapolis, appeared Friday before the Indiana House to receive the honorary designation, bestowed by Indiana governors on people who have made a contribution to the state. Miss Rogers said she wanted legislators to know “howdelighted I am to meet you and your precious Governor Orr.” That prompted a roar of laughter from House members as Orr blushed. • NORWALK, Conn. (AP) John F. Kennedy Jr. is eager to clear a speeding charge and get his Massachusetts driver’s license back, even though he failed to answer a summons, his lawyer says. Kennedy, 21, was arrested by state police in Westport on Jan. 7. allegedly for driving 81 mph in a 55 mph zone. He failed to answer the summons Thursday in Norwalk Superior Court and Judge Philipp Mancini ordered his license suspended. Alexander Forger, a family lawyer in New York, said Kennedy, a student at Brown University in Providence, R. 1., recognizes the offense and “his sole purpose now is to pay the fine.” Forger speculated that Kennedy "became immersed in exams and just forgot the date” of the hearing. • LONDON (AP) A new play by Tom Stoppard, called “The Real Thing," had enough right stuff to be named the best play of 1982 by The Standard, a London evening newspaper. The play about love and infidelity stars Roger Rees, who played Nicholas in the Royal Shakespeare Co.’s recent and acclaimed adaptation of Dickens' “Nicholas Nickleby.” Alec McGowan’s portrayal of an aging Adolf Hitler in the play "The Portage to St. Cristobal of A H.” won him the best actor award. A special award to Sir John Gielgud was presented by his longtime colleague. Sir Ralph Richardson, in honor of his six decades on the British stage.
