swam a lege on DePauw’s second place relay team. Swimming the 400 meter indivual medley (IM) for the first time in competition, Leatham won in 4:58.84, not only a new pool record, but a national qualifying time. She also set pool and school records in the 500-meter freestyle and the 1,650 meter freestyle. Her final victory was in the 200-meter IM. ‘‘Obviously Kerry was fantastic this weekend, particularly considering the distances she swam. She was considered a sprinter in high school, but we think her best events are in the distances,”

Nothing comes easy

Past losses fueled playoff drives

LOS ANGELES (AP) Losing builds character. That is what football coaches tell their teams suffering through hard times. The Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins, who meet Sunday in Super Bowl XVII, both subscribe to that theory. They got here, they say, thanks in large measure to past hardships, including character-building losses suffered a year ago. For the Dolphins, the test came in the 1981 divisional playoffs against the San Diego Chargers, a memorable game Miami lost 41-38 in overtime. Trailing 24-0 in the first quarter, they had climbed off the deck to first tie the score, then take the lead, only to have the Chargers come back and tie it in the last minute. Then Uwe von Schamann had two field goal tries blocked before Rolf Benirschke kicked a 29-y arder to win it. “That loss built a little character,” said guard Bob Kueehenberg. “You're down 24-0 in the first quarter. W'e did a little fast calculating on the sidelines and it projected to 96-0 for the game. That would be a little embarrassing on national television and all. It was time for a gut check. We came of age a little that day.” The victory sent the Chargers to the AFC championship game against Cincinnati the next week and finished Miami’s season. The following Sunday, with San Diego playing for the conference title, Dolphin teammates A.J. Duhe and Doug Betters were on a skiing trip. “We got up early, just like we were still playing." Duhe said.

GEORGE GERVIN Scores 37 points

Bullets coming together

B\ The Associated Press The Washington Bullets may be seeing a few changes pay off. Coach Lenny Wilkens hints he may be thinking along the same lines in Seattle. After Greg Ballard had scored 34 points to give Washington a 99-86 victory over Seattle Thursday night, Rickey Sobers, the Bullets’ newest acquisition, was answering questions. Sobers had scored 18 points despite playing “like a chicken with his head cut off” during part of the game. “I’m familiar with certain aspects of (Coach) Gene Shue's offense,” Sobers said “But I’m not completely comfortable.” The Bullets have released four backcourt players since the season began and acquired Sobers two games ago from Chicago. Shue said he liked the versatility Sobers gave his team.

Clovers beat Eminence

EMINENCE-Erupting for 20 second quarter points, Cloverdale defeated host Eminence Tuesday night 46-35 in high school girls basketball play. The now 7-10 Clovers trailed 8-4 at the end of the first period, but led 24-19 at halftime and never looked back. The Clovers were up 33-23 when the final period opened. COACH GREG HAMMOND was not too happy with Cloverdale’s play, but was happy about that. “I was disappointed. That was probably the worst game we’ve played from a mental standpoint. We’ve got them next week, so I hope that was

Mary Bretscher said. FRESHMAN JEAN Chamness also 4 :'alified for the nationals from the DePauw team in diving. Chamness finished fourth in both the one and three-meter dives, but because of what Bretscher termed ‘‘an excellent diving competition” was able not only to qualify, but also to set school records in both events. Wendell Gooch and Tom Bayer won high honors for the men’s team. Gooch, a senior who last competed as a freshman, won both diving events, shattering the school and national qualifying marks in the

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - George Gervin likes playing at Market Square Arena, and having Artis Gilmore and Mike Mitchell along makes the experience even more enjoyable. Gilmore, Gervin and Mitchell combined for 109 points Thursday night as the San Antonio Spurs downed the Indiana Pacers 143-138 in a National Basketball Association game. "I’m real pleased with the outcome,” said Gervin, who scored 37 points. “We played well down the stretch. We showed we have a dominating center like Artis, and he’s only going to help Mike's and my game out.”

“Ricky gives us good defense, consistent outside shooting, and flexibility,” Shue said. All of a sudden, our backcourt could be a little more versatile and quick.” The victory was only the second in 12 games for the Bullets, while the Sonics were losing for the 12th time in 14 games. “If these guys want to stay here, they've got to do the job.” the Seattle coach said. Rockets 98. Warriors 84 Houston led by just seven points with 8:31 left and ran the advantage to 87-72 on two quick buckets apiece by rookie Terry Teagle and Calvin Murphy in beating Golden State. Allen Leavell paced the Rockets with 16 points and 13 assists. The Rockets now have won two games in a row for the first time this season. Purvis Short

three-meter competition and coming within four-tenths of a point to qualify in the onemeter The equivalent of the difference between a judge giving him a seven, or a 7.5 on one of the 11 dives left him shy in the one-meter. Bayer, a junior, won both the 100 and 200-meter freestyle butterfly events. Bayer also took second in the 400-meter IM. THE DePAUW men’s and women’s team will host the University of Missouri at St. Louis Saturday in a 2 p.m. meet. The meet is open to the public.

“We said, ‘Let’s ski all day,’ and that’s what we did. And we did it with the same emotion and intensity of a game. It was as if we were still playing football.” “I remember standing in the locker room after the game,” said defensive end Kim Bokamper. “I was thinking we had worked so hard and now we were going home with nothing. It was as tough as any game I had ever been in and I realized that we had to play even tougher than that, “Everyone remembered that this year. We talked about it and what it felt like. We gained a lot of maturity that day.” Charger tight end Kellen Winslow was a dramatic figure that day, helped off the field, at the end of the game, totally exhausted. Miami linebacker Earnest Rhone laughed at the memory of that. “You think he was exhausted,” he said. “Imagine how we felt chasing him all day. I couldn’t have played much longer. I would have passed out. The next day I couldn’t eat. “We should have won and we could have won. There was a carryover from that game to this year.” The Redskins experienced the same kind of carryover, but their turnaround occurred somewhat earlier than Miami's. At the start of 1981, Joe Gibbs was hired as Washington’s new coach. His regime started in reverse with five consecutive losses, none of them closer than 10 points. The team was spinning its wheels.

Gilmore’s help added up to 39 points, while Mitchell finished with 33, including two clutch free throws in the final seconds. “I really like playing here,” added Gervin. “Normally when I play here Billy Knight guards me and I guard him and we end up with about 40 apiece. Tonight we didn’t guard each other. " Spurs Coach Stan Albeck said this is the first time Gervin. Gilmore and Mitchell have played well in the same game. “We had a stellar preformacne from Gilmore,” said Albeck “And Ice (Gervin) really enjoys Market Square This is one of his better shooting arenas.”

paced the Warriors with 23 points. Trail Blazers 120, Jazz 106 Jim Paxson scored 22 points as Portland rolled over Utah. The Trail Blazers led by as many as 25 points in the first half and allowed Utah to get no closer than eight points in the second half. Wayne Cooper and Kenny Carr had 15 points apiece for Portland, and Darrell Griffith and Mitchell Anderson each had 20 for Utah. Clippers 110, Hawks 100 A 1 Wood scored a season-high 21 points coming off the bench, and Terry Cummings added 18 points and 20 rebounds to carry San Diego over Atlanta The Clippers led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before Atlanta stormed back behind Dominique Wilkins. A short jumper by Cummings with 4:00 left in the third period gave the Clippers the lead for good, 74-73. Eddie Johnson led the Hawks with 21, and Wilkins had 17.

Pacers Coach Jack McKinney said the Spurs trio might be the best threesome* on any team in the league after watching his team lose its sixth straight home game “They’ve (the Pacers) played so hard it’s hard to get mad at them,” said McKinney. “It wasn’t bad defense as much as that trio had a tremendous offensive game and its hard to stop them." It was hard to stop either team. Indiana shot better than 63 percent for the game, while the Spurs hit a 60 percent clip Indiana’s Herb Williams tied the game 126-126 with a rebound layup with 3:36 remaining before the Spurs ran off a 7-0 burst. Gilmore started it with a three-point play with 3:30 remaining, Gervin added a jumper and Mike Dunleavy capped the burst with layup with 2:20 left.

“We were losing, but the team was staying together,” said defensive tackle Dave Butz. “Nobody was pointing fingers, blaming other guys. We believed in the coach and in the system. “There was a growing attitude rather than an instant awareness. We were convinced when Coach Gibbs said this was only temporary. The veterans had never lost that often. He told us to hold on. to keep on trying, that things would change around.” The next week, the Redskins went into Chicago and defeated the Bears 24-7 for Gibbs’ first victory. John Riggins rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns that day and it was a recipe the Redskins would follow straight to Pasadena a year later. “That first win after the five losses that was our turning point,” Gibbs said. “They were so hungry and we stuck with them. From that time on, we were never beaten badly.” They almost were never beaten at all. Washington won eight of its final 11 games last season and is 11-1 this year, including the three playoff victories leading up to the Super Bowl. That is a 19-4 pace that is the best in pro football over that stretch. “The foundation for this was built in that 0-5 start,” said safety Mark Murphy. “All along, we felt we had a good coach and a good team and we could win. But we didn’t until that game in Chicago. Then things fell into place and from then on, our record has been phenomenal.”
