People in the news Celebrity homes lashed by storm MALIBU, Calif. (AP) Actor Bruce Dern, his bearded head hanging after the year’s fiercest Pacific storm, sloshed a broom at a pool of muddy seawater in a small back room of the seaside home he bought 12 years ago for $2.7 million. “It was about 7 or so this morning,” said Dern, clad in a red rubber suit and boots. “It was just one big wave that washed straight through the house.” The house belonging to Dern, whose film credits include “Coming Home” and “That Championship Season,” was among 30 in the private, heavily guarded Malibu Colony that were engulfed Thursday by surging Pacific Ocean waves that tossed patio furniture, logs and front porches through the multimillion-dollar beachfront homes. “I’d just walked out of the teahouse, when I heard a big crash,” he said. The giant wave, bred by a high tide and a brutal storm, collapsed the teahouse that juts toward the ocean, ripped through windows and walls at the front of the house and poured into the garage-lined street in back. A home owned by actor Burgess Meredith, the coach in the “Rocky” movies, also was among the most heavily damaged at the exclusive development. Actress Dyan Cannon held up her arms and shrugged as she stared at the thick debris floating atop her swimming pool. Television star Michael Landon made out better than many: there was little structural damage at his seafront home in Malibu Canyon, and a crew from “Little House on the Prairie” showed up with a truckload of plywood to cover ocean-facing windows. Booming waves crashed over the front wall about 7 a.m. “and turned my swimming pool into a mud pie,” Landon said. YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) Michael Patrick Bilon, a leader of the Little People of America and the actor who played the outer-space character “E.T.” during most of the hit film, has died at the age of 35. “Anybody who was ever around Pat Bilon for 10 minutes was a friend. He was one of our favorite people around here,” said Fred Skidmore, a spokesman for Universal Studios in Los Angeles. A midget who was 2 feet 10 inches tall and weighed 45 pounds, Bilon was admitted to St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in Youngstown on Wednesday afternoon. He died shortly after 1 a m. Thursday of complications from pneumonia, hospital officials said. Bilon’s father and agent, Michael C. Bilon, said his son had been negotiating to act in a sequel to the box office smash, “E.T. The Extraterrestrial,” whose earnings last week hit $194 million, making it the biggest money-making movie of all time, surpassing “Star Wars,” the previous record-holder. After the film’s release, there was some confusion about who played the role. Skidmore said Bilon was assisted by a young boy for some scenes and by a female midget for others. “Pat did do the majority of the movie,” Skidmore said. “He was also E.T. when E.T. appeared at the Hollywood Bowl last summer.” Bilon had acted in several films, including “Under the Rainbow,” starring Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher. Bilon’s role in the film was created for him and he was the smallest member of the cast, which included many midgets. Bilon, whose size was caused by a bone impairment at birth, is survived by his parents and a foster brother. • Grant Tinker, NBC chairman, denied a story in Variety, the show biz bible, with a rare touch of humor. Variety had reported that he was contemplating retiring from the network because of “extreme fatigue.” Tinker’s rebuttal: “I read with considerable interest your comment about my extreme fatigue. I would write you an angry letter taking you to task for disseminating such misinformation, but I’m too tired.”

LARRY WILCOX: Found innocent LOS ANGELES (AP) Former “CHiPs” star Larry Wilcox has been found innocent of contempt of court for an altercation with his estranged wife, but was ordered to stay away from her except when visiting their child. Superior Court Judge Kenneth Black said Thursday he was convinced there had been some “mutual combat” between the 35-year-old actor and Johanna Wilcox, but there was “a small reasonable doubt” Wilcox had wilfully struck her during a Jan. 3 argument. Black granted Mrs. Wilcox's request for a restraining order barring her husband from coming within 100 yards of her except when exercising his visitation rights to their 20-month-old daughter, Wendy. Mrs. Wilcox, 34. had accused Wilcox of contempt of court for allegedly disobeying a May court order barring him from striking, restraining or harassing her. • ELLICOTT CITY, Md (AP) An assault charge filed against rhythm and blues singer Lou Rawls has been dropped. after the plaintiff said she no longer wanted to pursue the case. The charge stemmed from a dispute following a concert by Rawls last July at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in nearby Columbia. Sally C. Carroll, identified in court papers as Rawls’ personal assistant, said the singer “struck me with his fist on the right cheek, eye and nose, causing fractures.” Rawls' lawyer said the 49-year-old singer was innocent of the charge. After Ms. Carroll decided to drop charges, Howard County District Judge R. Russell Sadler agreed Wednesday to dismiss the case. • MACON, Ga. (AP) Lamar Williams, a former bass guitarist with the Allman Brothers band, died Friday of cancer at the age of 36 Williams also joined Chuck Lavell and Jaimoe Johnson, both former members of the Allman Brothers band, and Jimmy Nalls to form Sea Level in 1976. Sea Level was moderately successful before Williams left the group in 1980. • ATLANTA (AP) The Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from 1968 to 1977, may require surgery at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore. Doctors are determining whether the civil rights leader is healthy enough to have a bypass operation on a cerebral artery. His doctor in Atlanta, Dr. Bernard J. Bridges, said the 56-year-old Abernathy was admitted to Crawford Long Hospital here last week after his speech became slurred. Tests showed “symptoms of an early or incomplete stroke manifested by the slurred speech.” Bridges said. • LODI, Wis. (AP) Albin C. Wopat, 63, father of actor Tom Wopat of the “Dukes of Hazzard” television program, died Thursday of a heart attack.
