Crystal Cathedral may face $400,000 in back property taxes

c. 1983 N.Y. Times GARDEN GROVE, Calif. When Orange County's Crystal Cathedral opened in 1980, a local music critic wrote, “People in glass houses should not give concerts." He was complaining about poor acoustics in the huge glasswalled church here designed by the architect Philip Johnson. But, unwittingly, he was anticipating a complaint filed against the church recently by California tax officials. The State Board of Equalization withdrew the building's property tax exemption last month because, it complained, concerts featuring Lawrence Welk, Victor Borge and Fred Waring had been staged there and the church had been used for a variety of other secular enterprises, including profit-making weight reduction classes and psychological counseling programs. “There’s been nothing like it, nothing as commercialized as this,” William Grommet, an investigator for the Equalization Board, said in an interview. “They were charging people sl2, sl7 for tickets. They even had a Ticketron there; the first time I saw it, I thought; 'You mean you have to buy a ticket to go to church?’ ” If not reversed, the decision means that the Garden Grove Area youth invited to 'lock-in' “I am Loveable and Capable” is the theme of a “lock-in” planned Feb. 4 and 5 by the Chi Rho Youth Group of First Christian Church. All sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from Area 8 youth groups are invited to join the event at the church. The lock-in will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, and conclude with a sending-forth ceremony at 6;30 a.m. Saturday. Participants will have an opportunity to enjoy games, roller skating and creative art. Snacks will be provided. In addition, the young people will participate in group building, sharing and a worship experience. A $3.50 fee will be required of each participant to meet expenses with an additional 50 cents for skate rental. Each group attending also must have at least one sponsor, although more are invited. Reservations and further information are available by calling Rita Liechty, youth coordinator at First Christian Church, at 653-3146.

Hilderbrand is with Sen. Ed Pease of Brazil (District 37), left, and Sen. Bill Dunbar of Terre Haute (District 38). He was the guest of both senators during his Statehouse visit.

Community Church, which owns the $lB million building, must pay about $200,000 in back taxes for each of the last two years, plus a possible penalty, and pay about $200,000 annually in the future. Dr. Robert Schuller, the television evangelist who presides at the Crystal Cathedral, denies that the church has done anything wrong He has appealed the decision and predicts that the church’s taxexempt status will be restored, at least in part. Although no one has made any claims that the Garden Grove Community Church, which has a congregation of about 10,000, is anything but a bona fide religious organization, the confrontration represents the latest in a long series of disputes in California between the state and prosperous organizations that have sought to avoid taxes by claiming religious status. Dr. Schuller, a member of the Reformed Church in America, known in New York as Collegiate Churches, preaches an upbeat doctrine of optimism similar to Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s “power of positive thinking.”

He started his ministry in the 1950’s atop the tar-paper roof of a drive-in movie snack bar in this community about 35 miles south of Los Angeles, preaching to followers in their cars. Later he became one of the nation's most successful television evangelists with a program called “Hour of Power." Aides to Dr Schuller say that the church has revenue of about S3O million a year. Since it opened in September 1980, the Crystal Cathedral, which seats nearly 3,000 people, has become another popular Orange County tourist attraction, like nearby Disneyland. More than 125 feet high and 415 feet wide, its interior is a stunning cavern without columns, clad in more than 10,000 panes of transparent glass. Schuller, who has often compared his church to the great cathedrals of Europe, explained that he initially decided to hold classical music concerts in the church as a service to the community, much as some churches did centuries ago. Later, he said, it was decided to present popular music as well, to appeal to more people and not seem “stodgy.”

Scientists, religious leaders share concern

Hesburgh urges joint anti-nuclear effort

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The world’s scientific and religious leaders must join in condemning the growing threat of nuclear war, says the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh. ‘ We have never had such an evil as we have now where we can commit mass suicide,” Hesburgh, president of the University of Notre Dame told a news conference Tuesday. Hesburgh discussed a meeting he attended in Vienna earlier this month where leaders of several religious faiths discussed the nuclear problem with scientists. He said the world’s nuclear powers possess collectively a destructive force 1 million times greater than the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. “That has to be the greatest moral evil and it’s hard to think of any possible good that could justify doing such evil,” Hesburghsaid The Vienna gathering was at-

meeting grew out of a declaration signed last September by more than 30 international scientists, including Soviets and Americans, that stated there is no real defense against nuclear weaponry which pose a danger “on such a catastrophic scale as to wipe out a large part of civilization and to endanger its very survival.” Meeting with scientists thwarts the argument that religious leaders should stay in their churches because they don’t know anything about nuclear power, Hesburgh said, adding “They sure do if they’re being taught by the people that created it.” Hesburgh said the clerics want political leaders of both east and west to sit down for meaningful talks on disarmament. “It isn’t a question of trust. It’s a question of verifibility,” said Hesburgh. “We never asked anybody to

trust the Russians because most people don’t,” Hesburgh said. “I should add that they don’t trust us either with some reasons. I think we have fudged a bit here and there and so have they. Hesburgh said the develop ment of newer, more mobile means of launching nuclear missies in as little as five years will make verification impossible and “then the fat is in the fire. “I’m not in favor of a unilateral nuclear freeze. I think it wouldn’t do any harm in the sense that if we stopped building nuclear weapons now it wouldn’t be jeopardizing our security because we ’ve got much more than we need for our security right now,” Hesburgh said. “I think its better to keep everything in a bi-lateral situation. We want to get both sides moving in the other direction, not just one side.,” he said.
