Hints from Heloise

Decorated coffee can great storage for kitchen utensils

DEARHELOISE: I like to keep my kitchen utensils within reach. Hate pulling out a kitchen drawer with things in such a cluttered mess. I decorated a large coffee can. Now I store my longhandled spoons, ladles, spatulas in it and keep it right on the counter next to the stove. Only go into the drawer now for less-used items. Elaenor Collins ★ ★ ★ Great idea, just having utensils in sight saves searching-and-seeking time! Anything to help organize a kitchen, right? Thanks, Heloise BABY FOODS Dear Heloise: Often my 7-month-old baby does not finish all his strained baby food from

dinner. Rather than feed him the same thing the next night for dinner again, I reheat the baby food and mix it into his cereal for lunch the next day. He just loves it that way and nothing goes to waste. This can be done with leftover strained fruits as well. My baby gets the full benefits of two different tastes at the same time, plus all the nutrition and vitamins both kinds of foods have to offer. Virginia Stephens FRIENDLY COUPONS Dear Heloise: Do you know what I do to help pass the time while waiting in what seem to be endlessly long checkout lines at the super market? I am a coupon saver and have many extra coupons that I know I will never use. So while waiting in line, I will

very casually mot to offend anyone) glance at the items in the shopping carts of the people around me, then I will look through my coupons to see if I might have one that they could use. If I do, I will quietly ask them if they have a coupon for such an item, and if they say no, I will then offer them the one I have. You might think that I was giving them a check for $50.00 the way they light up. One lady almost hugged me across the baskets because I gave her a 30-cent coupon for some cereal and they were giving double coupons that day. It’s fun and makes the wait seem so much shorter. Denise Fitze ★ ★ * You are a sweetheart an extra hug from me. Heloise PET POINTERS Dear Heloise: I have a large plastic container with a shaker top (holds about onethird box of baking soda). I sprinkle about 3 tablespoons all across the bottom before pouring in 2 or 3 quarts of clean kitty litter. This seems to combat any odor for 2or 3 days. (It is wise to remove the solid matter at least once daily also.) J.C. LIBRARY BOOKS Dear Heloise: My daughter loves books and we come home from the library with 15 or 20 books at a time. As soon as we get home, I pull the cards out of the little pockets in the back of each book. •These cards list the title, so when it’s time to return books, I have an easy file of what books we have at home. Since there are always books in every room at our house, it makes the search a little easier. It also keeps the cards from

Notes & Quotes Hidden calories on salad bars

By BETTY H. SENDMEYER Extension Home Economist Watching your waistline? Then, watch yourself at salad bars. It’s easy to forget how fast calories add up as you make your own salad. being removed and lost. R.F. EASY IDENTIFICATION Dear Heloise: I get many unsolicited, gummed name stickers every year, most of which have previously gone to waste. Now, I take them when I go shopping and when I make a purchase, I peel one of the gummed stickers off the backing and stick one on the item and one on the outside of the bag so that if I am careless enough to leave a package on a counter or in the restroom, the person finding the bag can return it to the store or notify me, if he or she wants to return it. The stickers peel off the items easily without leaving any trace of the glue. I Jllian Titmas REV ITALIZED RACKS Dear Heloise: Many of us throw away our plastic dish drain racks when they get too crummy-looking to use. I’ve started putting mine into my dishwasher when I don’t have a full load of dishes. It may take a few washings to make it look new again, but its appearance is definitely improved. V.L. Grimsley NIFTY’ NET Dear Heloise: If you have a blouse which is too short to stay tucked in your pants or skirt, sew a strip of nylon net around the bottom of the blouse. (The width of the strip will depend on how much extra tuck-in is needed.) Since the net is so thin, it won’t add bulk to the hem of the blouse, thus causing the stitching to show. I turn down a two-inch cuff on a paper bag and tape it to my sewing machine. I put thread clippings, seam trimmings, or whatever into the sack and when it is full, just throw it away. Makes for neater sewing. —; Mrs. Howard Clark BOTTOMS UP Dear Heloise: Store paint, cans upside down so that the heavy pigment will be on top; when the cans are opened, making mixing much less of a' chore. .After a can has been opened, first be sure the lid is onsecurely before turning the can upside down. Mrs. R. H. Richwine DUST FREE Dear Heloise: If you don’thave a dust cover for a gar-', ment, just use a small-size; plastic trash can liner. Cut a small hole at the bottom center of the bag and slip it over the hanger hook. Inexpensive and effective. Carolyn Rich GRATING GOODIE Dear Heloise: I’ve noticed lemon rind is much easier to grate if it’s frozen, so after squeezing out the juice, I put the lemon into a plastic bag and place it in the freezer, grating it as needed.
