Going to full court LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fernando Valenzuela and the Los Angeles Dodgers may set new highs when they enter arbitration on the pitcher’s salary. It was reported Monday that Valenzuela has asked for $1 million for 1983 and the Dodgers have submitted a figure of $750,000. Each figure would be the highest ever filed since baseball began using salary arbitration in 1974. If agreement is not reached between the Dodgers and Valenzuela before a hearing next month, an arbitrator will choose one of the two figures he was asked to consider. Tony DeMarco, Valenzuela’s agent, has said he expected the two sides to continue to negotiate in hopes of reaching a settlement that would make arbitration unnecessary. Valenzuela was a holdout during spring training last year, with DeMarco asking the Dodgers for a sl-million contract for his client. But Valenzuela's contract was renewed at $350,000 and he played without signing the contract. He was not eligible for arbitration until this year.

Two of Dolphin veterans played this game in 1972

LOS ANGELES (AP> - A decade ago, they were the NoNames, a crew of mostly anonymous defenders proud of their lack of glamour, who merely led the Miami Dolphins to 16 consecutive victories. The last hurdle for the perfect season was Super Bowl VII. All the Bill StanXi 11 s, Nick Buonicontis, Jake Scotts and Dick Andersons had to do to make National Football League history was beat the Washington Redskins. No way, said the oddsmakers. who made the No-Names threepoint underdogs. But Miami won 14-7, despite the ill-advised, impromptu passing of placekicker Garo Yepremian. Perfect Now, 10 years later, the Dolphins are back in the Super Bowl and, just for old times sake. Washington has shown up. too. This time, the odds-makers like the Dolphins' chances better. This time. Miami is the three-point favorite. “It s deja vu,” said guard Bob Kueehenberg, who was clearing tacklers away for Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick and Bob Griese in 1972 and performs the same function for Andra Franklin, Tony Nathan and David Woodley now. Kueehenberg, 35, and defensive end Vern Den Herder, 34, are the only members of the Class of ’72 who showed up for the reunion in uniform. And Den Herder, one of the No-Names, almost didn't make it. He tried to retire this year but was coaxed back by Coach Don Shula to back up Kim Bokam-

Theismann man of year CANTON, Ohio (AP) Quarterback Joe Theismann will carry an extra title when he leads the Washington Redskins against the Miami Dolphins Sunday in the Super Bowl. The former Notre Dame star was named Monday as the Man of the Year in 1982 in the National Football League. The award, administered by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and sponsored by Miller High Life Beer, is determined on the basis of a player’s contributions to the community as well as for his playing excellence. Theismann. in his ninth NFL season, guided the Redskins to an 8-1 record in the strike-shortened 1982 season. Washington’s record was the best in the National Football Conference. During the season. Theismann won the NFC passing title with a 91.3 rating. He completed 161 of 252 passes for 2,033 yards and 13 touchdowns. Off the field. Theismann was a member of the Corporate Board of Childrens Hospital National Medical Center, where his daughter once underwent open-heart surgery. Along with Nancy Reagan and former White House press secretary James Brady, he was co-host of a program for orphaned children He also served as a club spokesman for a promotion that helps Special Olympics and Childrens Hospital.

Brudzinski and safeties Glenn and Lyle Blackwood. They led the league in total defense, allowing 256.9 total yards per game and their yield of just 114.1 per game passing also was the NFL’s best in that department. Containing the B's will be the

job of Washington’s offensive line, which has tagged itself the Hogs, treasuring their own anonymity much the way the Miami No-Names did in 1972. Coming back turned out to be a most profitable decision for Den Herder. He’s already earned $34,000 in playoff payoffs for Miami's first three games and will get either SIB,OOO or $36,000 more depending on who w ins Sunday’s contest. Those payoffs are double what they used to be before the seven-week strike. What’s more, the new contract provides for severence pay and fixed minimums, making Den Herder's return a financial windfall. His minimum salary, as a result of the settlement is $140,000. His severence, should he retire after Sunday’s game, will be another $140,000. When he retired originally, his severance was SO. And don’t forget the $60,000 “Money Now’’ bonus that also was part of the settlement. The result is a $392,000 total for Den Herder if the Dolphins lose the Super Bowl and $410,000 if they win it. He would have received none of it had he remained on the sidelines.
