Flora’s Eagles have a lofty 14-2 record after Monday night's 45-43 victory over TriW’est, but Mooresville is undefeated and beat the Eagles 5137 earlier this season. “GOOD, THAT’S an excellent draw,” Greencastle coach Doug Rose said. Flowers looking for more playing time at UNLV
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - John Flowers, one of the most sought-after basketball prizes in recent Fort Wayne history, says he’s leaving Indiana University because of a lack of playing time. “The main reason (for leaving Indiana) was not getting to play a sport which I grew up playing all my life and a sport which I grew to love,” said Flowers, a 6-foot-10 forward-center from South Side High School. “I just wanted to go somewhere where I could get to play.” His apparent choice now is Nevada-Las Vegas, which was second on his list when he came out of high school. “They’re more suited to my game,” Flowers said in an interview with the Fort Wayne NewsSentinel. “They like to get up and down the floor.” This season Flowers hasn’t seen much of the floor. After appearing in all 29 games and averaging 4.7 points and 17 minutes per game as a freshman last year, Flowers’ sophomore

season has been a disappointment. He’s appeared in just eight games this year and has averaged only 3.3 points and 14 minutes per game. Why the inactivity? “I wasn’t having real good practices," Flowers said. “Practices were good the beginning of the year, but later on I hit a slump and had trouble. Everybody has their ups and downs. But I felt I still should have gotten to play more. But Coach (Bob) Knight didn’t feel that way, and he’s the boss there. And whatever he says goes. Then after I put everything into perspective, I decided I should leave. ” Two weeks ago, before Indiana’s Big Ten opener at Ohio State, Flowers walked out of practice and threatened to quit the team but was coaxed into staying by teammates Winston Morgan, Stew Robinson and Tracy Foster, the former Homestead standout and close friend of Flowers. But that was the beginning of the end.

Tiger Sharks win first swim meet against Chargers
LINDEN-Hard work and diligence finally paid off for the Greencastle High School swimming team. The Tiger Sharks broke a 16meet losing streak Monday night, defeating host North Montgomery 73-53 by taking nine of the 11 possible firsts and two of the top three scoring positions in five events. “I KNOW WINNING isn’t everything, but it’s nice to win,” coach Paul Bretscher said, obviously happy. “The last time we won a meet was in early December of 1981 at North Putnam. I think the last time we won at home was January 1981. I hope that one doesn't go too much longer.” Bob Nealon, Todd Gray and Eric Schoenfeld were double event winners for the Tiger Sharks. Nealon won the 200yard and 500-yard freestyle events. Gray led a one-two finish in both the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard breaststroke. Gray won the IM in 2:20.53 and Mike Opdahl finished second. When Gray clocked a 1:09.21 first place time in the breaststroke, Martin Oliver was right behind.
MCC match, Tri-State topped Spring Arbor 66-53 and Vincennes defeated Southeastern lowa 75-65. After the Sycamores’ loss Monday night at Terre Haute, Indiana State Coach Dave Schellhase said, "Turnovers really hurt us tonight. I knew coming in that we couldn’t make a lot of turnovers and expect to win. They made nine;
“I told him (Knight) I was thinking about leaving two or three weeks ago,” added Flowers. ’’He said when I decided to leave he'd do the best he could to help me go somewhere. He told me to do whatever makes me happy and he would help me out. I thank him for that. “I’m not leaving with any hard feelings,” said Flowers. "He’s (Knight) the best coach in the country, and if he thinks a player shouldn’t play, he shouldn’t play. You can’t argue with success. But from an athletic standpoint, which I was in, I saw only one side of the story ; and that was my story. I wanted to play and wasn't getting to play. And that's after I come in and bust my butt in practice. “Some days I’d have a good rebounding practice, but other days, those rebounds weren’t there. That was my role to rebound and play defense.” “It started building after I got back from the holiday tournament,” Flowers pointed out. “I knew I wasn’t going to play in the Ohio State
Schoenfeld, who joined the team about three weeks ago, won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.07 seconds with Martin Oliver finishing second and took the 100-yard freestyle in 57.75 seconds. TODD WATKINS won a first and second for the Sharks. Watkins took the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.40 with Quentin Oliver finishing second for Greencastle. Watkins and Opdahl finished second and third in the 100-yard butterfly. Quentin and Martin Oliver, Gray and Watkins formed the first place 200-yard medley relay team that put Greencastle ahead 8-6 after one event. Quentin Oliver, Opdahl, Nealon and Schoenfeld make up the first place 400-vard freestyle relay team. Greencastle scored as many or more points in every event but diving, where North Montgomery had two entries against Chris Buchanan. The Tiger Sharks won’t have an opportunity to end the homepool streak until Feb. 8 when
Leaders hold on to top positions
By The Associated Press UCLA, Indiana and North Carolina kept the top three spots today in The Associated Press college basketball poll, while a loss to previously unbeaten Arkansas allowed five members of last week's Top Ten to move up one notch. In a nationwide poll of 60 sports writers and broadcasters, UCLA grabbed 28 first-place votes and 1,146 points, and Indiana had 25 first-place votes and 11 fewer points than the Bruins. Last week, the Hoosiers trailed UCLA by only eight points. North Carolina stayed in third with 1,024 points and five firstplace ballots. Nevada-Las Vegas, the only NCAA Division I school with no losses, and Memphis State got one first-place vote each and took the fourth and fifth spots in the poll with 974 and 906 points, respectively. They each jumped one spot from last week’s Top 20 as Arkansas lost to Houston 7560 and fell from fourth to No. 12. Also moving up one place were No. 6 Virginia, No. 7 St. John's and No. 8 Louisville. Rounding out the first 10 were Houston, which leaped from 14th to ninth with its victory
we made 18. That’s the whole game right there." Ernest Patterson hit a 17-foot jump shot with two seconds left in overtime to get the victory for the Aggies. New Mexico State’s Derek Sailors hit a layup on a pass from Gillis Williams with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 66-66. Indiana State called a timeout to set up for a
game because I walked out of practice that week. Then I didn't get to play in the next three games. I thought I should have played. “The last game I played was at the end of the Nebraska game,” Flowers said. “Since then. I haven’t stepped on the court.” Flowers’ best game was in the Indiana Classic, when he scored a team-leading 16 points against Eastern Michigan. That was Dec. I.Q, exactly two years after he announced hjs decision to attend Indiana. At that time, he said it was a relief to get his decision out of the way. Two years later, he says it’s a relief leaving. "I just have a good feeling knowing I'm going to go somewhere where I can play," said Flowers. "I just know I went there (Indiana) and tried. But that school was probably not meant for me. Indiana will always be a good school. And they'll probably be in the (NCAA) Final Four and might win it all, but I felt like I wouldn’t be a real big contributor to them.”
