Indiana in total control of Big Ten after blowout
By KEITH GAVE Associated Press Writer Indiana seems to have learned its lesson, but lowa apparently needed another one. Both teams were preseason picks to battle for Big Ten basketball supremacy. Both lost their first games of the campaign three weeks ago. Since then. No. 2-ranked Indiana has won four straight games, including a convincing 93-76 win Saturday over visiting Michigan. And the Hoosiers now stand alone atop the standings at 4-1,14-1 overall. Tenth-ranked lowa won its next three games and would be sharing the top spot with Indiana were it not for upstart Wisconsin, which occupied last place by itself until the Hawkeyes went marching into Madison. Wisconsin won 65-62. Instead of the Hawkeyes, it is Minnesota in hot pursuit of Indiana. The Gophers are in second place by virtue of their 68-53 win over visiting Northwestern. In the other Big Ten game, Ohio State kept pace with lowa and Purdue with a 74-69 win
Pacers no challenge for L.A. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AH) - The Los Angeles Lakers, their dominance of the National Basketball Association’s Pacific Division relatively well established, must look for new challenges, Coach Pat Riley says. “The challenge for this team has to be something different now than it was,” Riley said Sunday night after the Lakers’ 105-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers. “Coming to work without some team pushing us has changed it. We have to set our sights on some of the Eastern teams.” The defending NBA champion Lakers, winners of 13 of their last 15 outings, maintained their division lead at six games over Phoenix with the win over the Pacers. Los Angeles led the entire game until the tenacious Pacers, who stayed within striking distance all the way, tied the contest at 97-all with 2:45 remaining. Indiana then went ahead and held the lead until Bob McAdoo’s 10-foot baseline jumper with 59 seconds remaining put the Lakers up 103-102.

over visiting Michigan State. Illinois and Purdue were idle Saturday. Michigan Coach Bill Freider admitted his team's thrashing by the Hoosiers could have been a lot worse. “Knight was nice to us by going to the bench so early." Freider said. “They just beat our tails off in every way. They took us out of the game." The Wolverind the game leading with an average of 10 more rebounds per game than its opponents. When it was over, each team had 37 rebounds. Kitchell and forward Handy Wittman each scored 22 points to lead the Hoosiers. Eric Turner topped Michigan with 18. Wisconsin’s youthful team came of age quickly. The Badgers, starting four sophomores and a freshman, stunned lowa. It was the second straight league triumph for Wisconsin, 6-9 overall, after losing its first four Big Ten games. “I’m just so proud of our kids," said first-year Badger Coach Steve Yoder, who called the win his biggest so far of the

season and one of the biggest of his career. Yoder and lowa Coach Lute Olsen said Wisconsin crashing the boards for a 32-23 rebounding advantage was the key. “One ballclub wanted the ball and the game more than the other," Olsen said. “We played a good game. They played a great one.” Freshman guard Rick Olson paced Wisconsin with 17 points. lowa's Steve Carfino. hitting on six of 10 attempts from threepoint range, topped all scorers with 22 points. Minnesota had its fast-break in overdrive during the final 10 minutes to pull away from stubborn Northwestern. Minnesota Coach Jim Dutchei said the Gophers added quickness to their front line with his decision to start junior college transfer Roland Brooks in place of Zebedee Howell at forward. “Roland was quick up and down the floor," Dutcher said. “He gave us some shooting over the zone and was a key in rebounding on the defensive boards."

The 24-vear-old Brooks, starting his first start as a major college player, finished with 14 points and snared key defensive rebounds that ignited three fastbreaks during a spurt when the Gophers scored 12 unanswered points to put the game away. Randy Breuer scored 19 to lead Minnesota. 4-2 in the conference and 12-3 overall. Jim Stack scored 19 to pace the Wildcats, who dropped their third straight Big Ten game for a 2-3 record. Northwestern is 114 overall. Michigan State Coach Jud Heathcoate blasted officiating at Ohio State and hinted that home-court bias has had more than a little to do with his team’s recent losing streak. “We’ve had 57 free throws against us and 11 for us on this two-game road trip." Heathcote said. “1 think maybe it was the way the game was called, but we're not supposed to coinmment about officiating. “I guess we brought our hatchets or something." he added sarcastically.

Redskins look forward to another reunion
MIAMI (AP) nearly six months since Miami whipped the Washington Redskins in a “meaningless” National Football League preseason game, and none of the Dolphins are looking back. The two teams will meet in Super Bowl XVII next Sunday, and that’s all that matters now. “What happened back then doesn’t mean anything. It's meaningless at this stage." linebacker A.J. Duhe said Sunday after the Dolphins stopped the New York Jets 14-0 to win the American Conference championship and a Super Bowl berth “This time, everything will be on the line," added Duhe, who intercepted three Richard Todd

Washington’s last appearance was in Super Bowl VII. when the Redskins, then coached by George Allen, dropped a 14-7 decision to the Dolphins. If the Dolphins haven't gained respect throughout the league during a 10-2 campaign, then at least they have that of the Jets. Sunday’s victory was Miami's third over New York this season. Miami became the first team to beat another three times in one season since the Green Bay Packers did it against Shula’s Baltimore Colts in 1965. The Dolphins accomplished the task with a swarming defense ranked No. 1 in the NFL during the strike-shortened season that shut down a high-
game and get an idea what to look for next Sunday. “They (Miami) have a wellbalanced team,” Gibbs said. “It will take an excellent defense to win.” In his brief two-year tenure in Washington. Gibbs has come up empty in two meeting with the Dolphins. While the Redskin defense has surrendered just four touchdowns in playoff victories over

powered offense for the second straight week. The club’s five interceptions tied a playoff record. Miami's offense struggled early, but still managed to hold the football for better than half the game in a steady rain that left the Orange Bowl turf a muddy mess. Miami limited the Jets to 139 total yards lowest in an AFC title game since Pittsburgh held Houston to 142 in 1978 and literally stopped Freeman McNeil, the NFL’s rushing king, in his tracks. McNeil, clearly bothered by the soggy turf, gained just 46 yards on 17 carries after gaining 202 in a first-round playoff victory over Cincinnati.
Detroit, Minnesota and Dallas, the defense has given up 1,021 yards. Offensively. Gibbs said the Redskins would continue to count on fullback John Riggins to carry the load in the Super Bowl. “Until somebody stops John we will let him carry the ball.” Gibbs said. The 33-year-old Riggins, getting his first shot at a Super Bowl ring after 11 years.
