Dear Abby
DEAR ABRY: I have read your column for years and finally need some advice. My 20-year-old daughter is planning to marry a man who dated her for several months before telling her he had a pregnant wife and two small children. How do 1 tell her that this sorry excuse for a man will never be more than the liar he has shown himself to he? How do 1 tell her she will never he able to trust him, or to look at herself in the mirror after she sees his wife and children? How do I tell her she deserves more? She says she “loves” him. Or am I the one who’s crazy? HEARTSICK MOM DEAR MOM: You aren’t crazy. Your daughter is. (“Love” is a mental condition that renders its victims temporarily blind to that which is clearly visible to everyone else.) You can talk from now until your voice gives out, but the more you point out his faults, the more ferociously she will defend him. Sorry, Mom. Some people have to learn the hard way. Just stick around to pick up the pieces.

DEAR ABBY: My mother-in-law cannot sit down to a meal without smothering everything she eats with hot sauce, jalapeno pepper, ketchup, Tabasco, A-l, you name it if it’s hot and spicy, she loads it on. She even uses it on eggs. This offends me because 1 work hard to prepare tasty meals when she visits. Of course, 1 don’t say anything, but my problem is that my 13-year-old daughter has picked up this habit, and I am trying to break her of it. My mother-in law says, “Let her eat what she wants.” I want to break my daughter of this habit because I’d like her to learn to appreciate the taste of food, and if she smothers everything with hot sauce, it will all taste the same. Also, I’m afraid too much hot sauce can harm her health. Am I wrong to try to get my daughter to lay off the hot sauce? Or should I let her eat what she wants? HOT AND BOTHERED DEAR BOTHERED: Your reasons for trying to get your daughter to lay off the hot sauce are valid. And yes, an excess of spicy stuff could be hazardous to one’s health. * * * DEAR ABBY: My husband is a 30-year career naval officer. Recently at a dinner party the subject of the high cost of medical care came up. I mentioned that the Navy had provided me with the best medical services free.
Hints from Heloise Bleach washes away build-up on plastic
DEAR HELOISE; I have one of those clear plastic shower curtains with scenes painted on it. The water where we live is hard lots of chemicals in it so it has caused a build-up on the curtain. Do you have a quick, easy way to clean it? Diane ★ * * Sure do just put it in the washing machine with a few white terry cloth towels. Add hot water, your normal laundry detergent and a cup of liquid chlorine bleach, then run the load through an entire cycle. The curtain will be squeaky clean when finished.
You may then place it in the dryer for a few minutes on low heat to remove wrinkles or hang as is. The steam from showers will eventually straighten out the wrinkles. See, isn’t that a snap? Good luck, Heloise SMOOTH CATSUP Dear Heloise: When my catsup is almost gone, it’s thick and hard to shake out. I put in a little cold water and shake it. Not only does it come out easier but I have enough catsup till we get to the store. Friends from Senior Citizens MUFFIN TINS Dear Heloise: I like to do crafts in the evening while watching TV. With a muffin tin on my lap, I can sort the beads and sequins into the different cups. I even use one cup to hold my glue bottle. I enjoy and get so much from your column. Maryann McCarthy BUCKLESONSHOES Dear Heloise: Here’s a hint that has made life with a 2M>-year-old run smoothly. My daughter is very independent and loves to buckle

. A woman in the group (not Navy) said, “Yes, our tax dollars go to pay your doctor bills!” Not wishing to create a scene, I said nothing at the time, but how I wanted to speak my piece. May 1 get if off my chest to you, Abby? Many others need to hear it: My husband and I are grateful for the many privileges we have had because of his career in the Navy. Therefore, you will never hear us complain about the long separations; having to cope with alien customs and languages in foreign lands in unsanitary conditions, often without hot water, air conditioning or central heating; losing precious heirlooms through theft and breakage due to constant moving; leaving friends and family behind and often risking our lives even in peacetime. It is regrettable that some begrudge us free medical care. Please be reminded that my husband a kind, intelligent, patriotic officer spent 30 of the best years of his life earning a comparatively small income, working for the American people to make their country a safer place to live! PROUI) NAVY WIFE, SAN DIEGO Do you put off writing letters because you don’t know what to say? Send for Abby’s complete booklet on letter-writing. her own shoes, but would never buckle them as tightly as needed. She would get very frustrated if I helped her, so I used a red felt tip pen and made a mark on the underside of the strap, next to the proper hole. Now she knows where to put the pin and is very proud to do it all by herself. Rene Farrell BLENDER FOR CRUMBS Dear Heloise: I have an aversion to washing any more dishes than absolutely necessary. When I need cracker crumbs for a recipe I put my crackers in a plasticbag preferably the zip-close type flatten it to remove excess air, seal and crush with a rolling pin. No rolling pins to wash and any leftover crumbs can be stored in the freezer for later use. I also make bread crumbs in the blender in larger quantities than needed for one recipe and store in plastic bags. This cuts down on washing the blender so often. Phyllis Stewart ★ * * You are absolutely right. Why wash an extra bowl!
Heloise SCISSORS FOR RAVELS Dear Heloise: When you do your ironing keep a pair of scissors on the ironing board to cut off ravelings. I find it handy to keep scissors near the dryer also to cut ravelings when you take clothes from the dryer. W.A.P. TUBE TOPS Dear Heloise: I have a helpful hint. I am a 21-year-old and my hint is putting a tube top that I use for sun bathing around my hairline when I wash my face. It works great keeping my hair out of the way. I also use it when I put my make-up on. Rosalie Wilcox DEAR HELOISE: Men I and women), have you ever had to put oil in a car and need a funnel but you can’t find one? Well, try this little hint. Cut the bottom off a 2liter plastic soda bottle and just drop the opened oil can into the inverted top of the bottle. Fits perfectly and works great! It also saves time, money, and a messy clean-up like you’d probably have if you didn’t use a funnel. And it's disposable. B. Fogle
