'l9 feet will come' Olson soars 18-11; world records fall
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Billy Olson is on a high-flying streak, but he says he's going higher still. ; “When 1 get on a fast runway Jand get the pole I want, 19 feet Jwill come,” Olson said Friday Jnight after he rewrote his own !week-old world indoor pole '.vault standard by clearing 18 ;feet, 11 inches. ; “Right now I'm fairly consistent at 18-10 and 18-11, but I ;know I’m not really sharp yet ;and jumping as well as I can,” said after his world best at the Sunkist Invitational. “I think that in the >eeks to come, I will get better ;and better. I don’t think I’m ;close to my limit yet.” - Olson made one try at 19-OV4, -but missed and decided to quit •for the evening because an old hamstring injury acted up. "I probably ran too hard down the runway and I really felt the hamstring when I was going up,” he said. “I’m vaulting in Albuquerque tomorrow night (Saturday), sol thought I’d stop with one try at 19 here.” Olson vaulted 18-lOV4 last weekend in Ottawa to rewrite his previous indoor world standard. The best outdoor effort for the 24-year-old former Abilene Christian star is 18-10, but his indoor peformances so far this year would indicate he’s a threat to break the current world outdoor standard of 19-0 3 /4 held by Vladimir Polyakov of the Soviet Union. Two other world indoor bests were recorded at the Sunkist meet, by Evelyn Ashford and Mary Decker Tabb. Ashford won both women’s sprints, including a world indoor best clocking of 5.77 seconds in the 50-yard dash. That bettered the old standard of 5.80 Shared by Andrea Lynch and Jeannette Bolden. ; Ashford’s winning time in the 80 was 6.70. ; Tabb ran her personal collection of indoor world bests to six l>y establishing a new standard On the board track of 9:31.7. That topped the old best of 9:37.03 by Joan Hansen. Ashford said she didn’t expect to run so well. “I’m surprised and happy that I got the world record,” she said. "I think that my training is right on time.” sTabb wasn’t particularly impressed with her own performance, saying, “I feel like I okay, though 1 ran slow. I didn't push myself because I

Malone, Dr. J punish Sonics 76ers run win streak to 14
By The Associated Press Coach Billy Cunningham isn’t sure when the Philadelphia 76ers’ 14-game National Basketball Association winning streak will end. But he’s certain it will be somewhere short of the 197172 Los Angeles Lakers' record of 33 in a row. “Thirty-three, that's awesome. 1 know. 1 played against that team,” Cunningham said after the 76ers disposed of the Seattle SuperSonics 130-117 Friday night and upped their record to 33-5. “I can’t see us winning 33 in a row. I still can’t see LA doing it. It's a feat that never will be duplicated, even the way we’re playing now. That was just amazing.” However, Cunningham did concede that the Sixers are “on a nice roll.” But. fearing the worst in the best tradition of the coaching fraternity, he quickly added that “we can’t be
Pacers nip Suns at Phoenix, 118-117
PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) - After meeting up with the Indiana Pacers’ version of the Johnson and Johnson Co., the Phoenix Suns' National Basketball Association victory streaks got powdered. Clemon Johnson tied his season high by scoring 22 points while George Johnson poured in 10 of his 11 points in the fourth period as the Pacers held on for a 118-117 win Friday night. Butch Carter also sank three crucial free throws in the final 11 seconds for Indiana, which
Valenzuela asks arbitrator to decide 'B3 salary
LOS ANGELES (AP) Negotiations on pitcher Fernando Valenzuela’s salary are going into arbitration after representatives for the Cy Young Award winner were unable to agree with the Dodgers on a reasonable sum, a representative for the player said Friday. Tony DeMarco, the agent for the third-year player, said he would not comment on specifics, but did confirm the arbitration had been requested. The salary request could be the highest figure ever submitted in arbitration, which is used to settle pay differences. The highest salary ever submitted was $700,000 by Bruce Sutter in 1980. The top club figure was $450,000 by the Detroit Tigers for Jack Morris and St. Louis for Ozzie Smith in 1982. Tuesday is the deadline to file for arbitration, and DeMarco said, “Since Saturday and Sun-

Highland-New Castle tops schedule
By The Associated Press Seventh-ranked Anderson Highland has a game plan for tonight’s matchup with N 0.6 New Castle, says Coach Jerome Foley: Keep the Trojans’ highscoring Steve Alford away from the foul line. “When are people going to get smart enough not to foul Steve?” Foley joked after Friday night’s easy 69-50 victory over Pendleton Heights lifted the Scots to 11-1 for the season. “Now we jump into the fire (against New Castle), but we’re going to try not to foul him (Alford).” Sending Alford to the foul line

They’re very unselfish.” Elsewhere, the Boston Celtics trimmed the Chicago Bulls 117106, the Los Angeles Lakers whipped the San Antonio Spurs 119-110, the Milwaukee Bucks turned back the Washington Bullets 111-104, the Indiana Pacers nipped the Phoenix Suns
snapped its six-game losing streak and broke Phoenix’s four-game winning skein plus nine-game homecourt unbeaten string. “Indiana outplayed us and the Johnsons did a job on us,” said Phoenix Coach John MacLeod. “We came out a little bit sluggish in the second half and they just flat beat us down the floor.” The score was tied 87-87 after the third period and 103-103 with 5:37 to go in the game before George Johnson's free throws gave the Pacers the lead for

DeMarco said his decision to avoid comment on the dealings was not a reaction to the exhaustive coverage the media gave last year's negotiations between the National League club and the standout player. “Last year is a chapter that is over. As it was last year, our concerns are for whatever is best for Fernando. This is what is best for Valenzuela,” DeMarco said. The agent said Valenzuela is vacationing in his native Mexico. "He is happy and plans to work hard, and that’s why he wants to enjoy his vacation now,” he said. After protracted negotiations before last season, the Dodgers unilaterally renewed Valenzuela’s contract at a reported $350,000 on March 1 and Valenzuela ended his holdout March 24, a month after spring training began.
The now 14-2 Eagles led 51-20 with 4:56 left in the third period when coach David Flora emptied the bench. South led 53-33 when the final quarter opened and when the Red Devils got within 12 with three minutes left, the Eagle starters were sent back into the game to set the final 18-point margin. Carter’s desperation jumper with 18 seconds left, coupled with his free throw seven seconds later, put Indiana up 116-112 before Phoenix’s Walt Davis hit a three-point goal with six seconds remaining. Two free throws by Carter with five seconds left padded the Pacer lead back to 118-115 and offset Davis' rebound basket at the buzzer after a missed three-point attempt. “I was just trying to draw iron and the foul,” said Carter
