Hints from Heloise Sesame seeds add flavor to pie crust
By Bil Keane
DEAR HELOISE: When making pie crust, try adding toasted sesame seeds to the flour, using about onethird cup to two cups of flour. I don’t think you will ever want to make plain pie crust again. Be sure to toast the seeds or you won’t get the flavor. Just sprinkle a thin layer into a fry pan and, over low heat, stir with a spatula until they are lightly browned, then remove quickly from the pan to avoid further browning. Sesame seeds can be bought in one-pound packages at supermarkets or health food stores quite reasonably. After toasting, I store them for quick use on breads and buttered noodles, for instance. And, what yummy cookies you can make by rolling the little balls of dough in the seeds before flattening. Use your imagination for other uses of sesame seeds. They are healthful as well as delicious. Vera Haven * ★ ★ Um-m-m-, crunchy, mouthwatering, nutritious flavor for only pennies extra and practically no extra work. Thanks for the flavor-filled hint. You are a sweetie for sharing. Heloise PEANUT BUTTER Dear Heloise: We thinned our peanut butter by adding a little milk (add a little sugar, if desired) until it was about as thick as jelly. Saved on peanut butter during the Depression days and it didn’t stick to the roof of the mouth. When I visited my son recently, I noticed they too fix their peanut butter the same way. Said the whole family now likes it better! Grandma TOMATO TIP Dear Heloise: When buying cold-storage tomatoes, select the firm (not quite ripe) ones, and ripen them in a brown paper bag usually does the job and they taste like vine-ripened tomatoes. Try it once and you will never go back to squeezing the redder ones. Surprise your friends by serving sliced tomatoes in midwinter. If they don’t read “Heloise,” they will be asking

you where you do your marketing. Helen Baum * * * I checked with a major peanut butter company they said since you are adding milk, be sure to keep it in the fridge. Hugs Heloise MONEYSAVER Dear Heloise: I love a good cup of coffee and have learned a neat trick to make it go further. Regardless of the type of coffee-pot I use, I always buy the fine ground coffee and use a filter, as the finer the grind, the less coffee I need to use. If you should find the other grinds on sale, buy them, then take them home and put about a half-pound at a time through your food processor or blender. Voila, finely ground coffee and money saved! Mrs. Willie Teeter BETTER WAFFLES Dear Heloise: My family loves those frozen waffles, but complained they got cold too fast. Solution? Simple just warm the syrup! I stand the bottle in a pan of

hot water for ten to fifteen minutes before I heat the waffles. By the time we’re ail ready, the syrup is warm. Even melts the butter! Delicious, good eating! Mary Campbell FRESHER CHEESE Dear Heloise: After cutting cheese, spread a thin coating of butter over the cut edges before placing it back in its container or wrapping in plastic. The cheese will remain more moist and flavorful with no dried-out edges. Mrs. R.F. Porath Dear Heloise: living in a cold climate, I have passed along this hint many times, especially to newcomers. For safer walking on icy surfaces outside one’s home, wear golf shoes shoes with little spikes on the bottom. ; They give you a very firm footing. Myrtle Abbott !
