People in the news Repeat music winners abound LOS ANGELES (AP) Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson and Lionel Richie headed a list of familiar faces who were repeat winners on the 10th annual presentation of the American Music Awards voted by 30,000 record buyers nationwide. The exceptions were Daryl Halt & John Oates, named favorite pop group; John Cougar, favorite male pop vocalist; Alabama, favorite country group, and Marvin Gaye, favorite soul single winner for “Sexual Healing.” Rogers won as favorite male country vocalist and for the favorite country single “Love Will Turn You Around” at Monday night’s nationally telecast ceremonies. He also was presented a special Award of Merit for his contribution to the entertainment of the American public. The bearded singer, whose country hits have also enjoyed tremendous success on pop charts, lent a homey note to the ceremonies by bringing his wife, Marianne, and their 13-month-old son, Christopher Cody, with him as he accepted the merit award. He also was the subject of a singing and spoken tribute by several artists, including Richie and show co-hosts Melissa Manchester and Mac Davis. Not including the special merit award, which is given by a committee of music industry figures, Rogers’ 10-year total now stands at 12 American Music Awards. The winners are determined by a poll of 30,000 record buyers selected to reflect the age, sex, ethnic background and geographic locations of record buyers nationwide. Nominees are drawn from year-end charts of music industry trade publications. Richie increased his total to six by taking favorite male soul vocalist and favorite pop single for “Truly.” He said he was surprised to win the award over Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” and "Ebony and Ivory” the Paul McCartneyStevie Wonder duet. “I like surprises,” Richie added. Willie Nelson's hit LP “Always on My Mind” won in two categories, favorite country album and favorite pop album. The country singer, who accepted via satellite from San Diego, said simply, “All of you who voted for me, thank you That’s all I can say.” Olivia Newton-John brought her total to nine by winning as this year's favorite female pop vocalist. She accepted via a satelilte transmission from Hawaii. Barbara Mandrell took her fourth award by being named favorite female country vocalist for the third straight year. Another repeat winner was Diana Ross, voted favorite female soul vocalist for a second time. Last year she had won two awards for “Endless Love,’ her duet with Richie, and in 1981 she won a favorite soul single award for “Upside Down.” Aretha Franklin, another co-hostess of the ABC telecast, got her third American Music Award, winning favorite soul album for ‘Jump To It.” She had won female soul vocalist honors in 1976 and 1977. • Dark hair - wavy or curly - is the clean-cut winner in the 1982 Hollywood Hairstylists Assn, contest. Hairstylists voted on the five men whose hair styles look best and there wasn’t a golden lock among the winners. Mr. Mustache himself, actor Tom Selleck, is on the fiveman list, of course. Others joining the “Magnum P I.” star are (in no particular order) Patrick Duffy of “Dallas," actor George Hamilton, rock star Rick Springfield and actor Sylvester Stallone.

ALI MacGRAW: Tries TV role

After finding film success in Hollywood with female lead roles in such movies as “Love Story” and “Goodbye, Columbus,” Ali MacGraw is hoping for the same success in her first made-for-TV movie effort. SHE WILL PORTRAY an American Jew caught in the Nazi occupation of Poland during World War II in the seven-part ABC miniseries “The Winds of War,” based on Herman Wouk’s works. Why should the actress suddenly turn to television? Recent film flops like “Convoy” haven’t hurt her decision, but it’s more basic than that. “More people will see the opening of ‘Winds of War’ than have seen all my pictures combined,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to do a television series, though, because of the time commitment. “I have an 11-year-old son, Joshua, and I don’t want to wake up and find him in college. My son empties the trash, walks the dogs, goes to public school...he’s not going to grow up without a childhood.” “THE WINDS OF WAR” will air for 18 hours, premiering Sunday, Feb. 6 and concluding Sunday, Feb. 13 on ABC. • NEW YORK (AP) Actor Alan Alda, star of the “M-A-S-H" series that is leaving television after a successful 11year run, says networks “cancel shows faster than the post office cancel stamps.” “The networks are constantly telling producers how to write shows and cast them,” Alda said in an interview in the February edition of McCall’s magazine. “That’s why TV is getting even worse, although that didn't seem possible.” Alda also said that although actors on the set of “M-A-S----H” had some good times in the comedy about the Korean War, it wasn’t always that way. “The experiences we had on this show were very close to life," Alda said. “Although we didn’t have actual blood, we had psychic blood. There were rats in the studio, just like at the front. The mattresses have lice in them. In the summer it’s sweltering in here. We had to learn to live together here the way we would have if we’d been in Korea. Except for the fact that nobody is dying in our war. we’re in a war. Sometimes you forget what’s real and what isn’t.”
