Dear Abby

DEAR ABBY: Our 25-y ear-old son, who is graduating from law school in a few months, is being married soon. His fiancee is a college graduate, and they are both intelligent adults. Our son just informed us that he plans to take his fiancee’s name rather than have her take his name! Needless to say, we are shocked. My husband feels that our son is disgracing our family and abandoning his heritage by doing such a thing. Our name is not difficult to spell or pronounce. It is Orlikoff. Hers is Reilly. Our son explained that he may one day pursue a career in politics and Reilly would be better than Orlikoff because Orlikoff sounds Russian, and people would be more inclined to vote for a candidate named Reilly. Abby, have you ever heard of a man taking his wife’s name? Mv husband and I are so hurt over this we may not even attend the wedding. We love our son and don’t want to alienate him. What should we do? PROUD ORLIKOFFS DEAR PROUD: Yes. I have heard of a man taking

his wife’s name. Please accept your son’s decision with grace and attend his wedding. If you refuse, you will surely alienate him. I can understand your disappointment, but your son is an adult and free to make his*own decisions. * * * DEAR ABBY: 1 have a part-time job delivering parcels to homes Sometimes it take a very long time to locate an address because half the houses on a street are not numbered anywhere that’s visible from the street. I keep wondering what would happen if some of these people needed the police, an ambulance or a fireman in a hurry. I hope you think this is important enough to print. D.H. DEAR D.H.: I do. Readers, if your address cannot be easily read from the street, you could lose more than a parcel! * * * DEAR ABBY: Hooray for you! Just keep telling people

Hints from Heloise

Freezing left-over dough way to make mixed dozen

DEAR HELOISE: I read your column daily and love all the time and cash saving ideas! My idea, too, is a money saver. It seems that there is almost always a small amount of dough left after the second cookie sheet and oven is filled. So, instead of keeping the oven hot to bake the few remaining cookies, I freeze that small amount of dough, wrapping it well in plastic wrap or foil, then placing it in a freezer container. When the container is full, there will be cookies of several different varieties about enough for two cookie sheets and I then bake them all. It’s like Christmas, with such a variety all at once. This is a big help when you discover the cookie jar is empty and time is short. (There are seven cookie monsters in our house!) Ixtve “Mama Jo” Thanks for helping with one of life’s little problems. I love the idea of having a mixed dozen without any work. I’m sure your family loves you too. Hugs Heloise HAMBURG STRETCHER Dear Heloise: Extend

ground beef for spaghetti and meatballs by adding wheat germ, sliced whole wheat bread soaked in milk, and grated carrot in addition to the eggs and seasonings you normally use. Shape the mixture into balls and brown them. Follow your favorite method of preparing the sauce. The end result will be quite delectable and your family will not be the wiser unless you tell them. One pound of ground beef can serve at least six persons. That is quite a saving, considering the price of meat. Agnes Sew ing NO STICKING Dear Heloise: I was trying to grease a bundt pan (anyone who has ever made a bundt cake will know what I’m talking about) and trying to get into each little crack and crevice. A brush didn’t work well, wax paper was worse, so I grabbed a section of paper towel, folded it in four and greased away. Magic! It worked so well I used the same trick today to grease bread pans. lx?ona Aras NEAT PLASTIC BAGS Dear Heloise: A friend of

that there is no excuse for failing to write a thank-you note. 1 have three children, ages f>, 8 and 10. My job as a parent is to teach my children good habits. When a gift arrives, we have a rule at our house. If it’s something to wear, it is not worn until a thank-you note is written. If it’s a toy, it may not be played with until a thank-you note is written. If it’s a check or money, it may not be banked or spent until a thank-you note is written. My children have been writing their own thank you notes since they were 4. (I guided their tiny hands, but they "wrote” the notes, and I addressed the envelopes.) The older ones do it by themselves now. The writing is not always perfect and neither is the spelling, hut the gratitude is theirs, and it is sincere. Children cannot be expected to know what they have not been taught. When parents make excuses for their children’s laziness and negligence, they are in truth trying to excuse their own failure to teach them. TOUGH BUT LOVING MOTHER

mine told me how she keeps her plastic bags, the ones from the grocery store that most of us save. Take one bag and roll it up tightly, then add more bags of the same size, one at a time, to the roll. Make as many rolls as you have different size bags. They are always at hand and you can see the size you want. What’s more, the drawer is always neat. Grace Shelton FAST WORK Dear Heloise: Want to snap beans faster? Use your kitchen scissors! Pick up about five beans at a time, and snip the tips. Then, holding the bundle of beans firmly at one end, cut into pieces each snip of the scissors cuts across all five beans. Mary Lawrence DEAR HELOISE: Forget what’s wrapped in foil in the freezer or the refrigerator? Next time, cut out a picture from a magazine of what’s in the package. Tape label on the top. Even a child can identify the contents. Hazel Engbers * * * Ohhhh! I love this hint. No more “guess what’s in this bowl.” So easy, too. Thanks.

Heloise FRESHER SPICES Dear Heloise: After closing the lid on a can of spices, turn the can or bottle upside down. They will keep for an extra long time. (A man from a spice company told me this hint.) Granny ★ * * Sure worth a try. It works well with cottage cheese and sour cream. Heloise PRETTY DRIFTWOOD Dear Heloise: I love to collect driftwood. I use it in dryflower arrangements. The driftwood I pick up is never that white there’s nothing like silverwood. Now there’s a way to whiten it to the fullest. Use bleach! I fill up a wash tub with water and some bleach. Let it. sit in the water overnight. Usually that is enough time to bleach it; if not, repeat the procedure. Now here’s something interesting : After it is bleached and thoroughly dried you can color it. Place it in a tub with warm water again, but this time add food coloring (strong solution), then let it dry again. The arrangements are lovely with the wood tinted yellow, on pale orange, any color that suits you. Toni Mavrothoris

DEAR ABBY: Now I’ve seen everything the preposterous idea of adding thank-you notes to the endorsement of checks sent as gifts in order to save the recipient the trouble of acknowledging them separately. Abby, sometimes the endorsements on checks must be carefully examined for validation, routing and other reasons, which might be difficult if a message like “Thank you, Grandma, this will buy that neat sweater I’ve had my eye on” or a clever drawing is added. Perhaps as the practice grows, our competitive, eager-to-please banks will have their checks printed with matching envelopes for thank-you messages! OVERDRAWN IN SOUTH CAROLINA * * * CONFIDENTIAL TO “ETHICAL PHYSICAL THFIRAPIST IN OHIO”: Sorry you found the headline on one of my columns offensive, but I do not write my own “heads.” They are written by my syndicate editor and sent to all the newspapers that run my column, where they are often rewritten by a copy editor at the local newspaper. If you hate to write letters because you don’t know what to say, send for Abby’s complete booklet on letter-writing. Send $2 and a long, stamped (37 cents), self-addressed envelope to Abby, Letter Booklet, P.O. Box 38923, Hollywood, Calif. 90038.
