This was the first hand of the 72-board final round of the 1970 Vanderbilt team of four championship and an exciting hand it was. At the first table, with Lazard and Rapee NorthSouth, the bidding went as shown. Two clubs was artificial and forcing, and two notrump showed either three kings or an ace and a king. Three spades and four diamonds were natural. Five notrump was the grand slam force accepting diamonds as trumps and asking partner to

bid seven with two of the three top trump honors. therefore bid seven, but, of course, in spades the suit he had intended to raise all along. Rapee won the club lead and made the percentage play of the A-K of spades, catching the queen to score a rousing 1,510 points. At the second table, the bidding was altogether different. It went: South West North East 24 34 Pass Pass 3 4 Pass 4NT Pass 54 Pass 64 Pass 74 Here the irrepressible Eric Murray, playing with Kehela, entered the fray with a three club bid. It is said of Murray that he does not need 13 points to bid; all he needs is 13 cards! Murray’s overcall had a devastating effect on the play. Declarer won the club lead with the ace, played the ace of spades, led a club to the king, played the ten of spades and took a finesse to go down one for a team loss of 1,560 points. Declarer assumed that since West liad very few highcard points for his three club bid, he was sure to have unbalanced distribution including probably a singleton spade. Declarer was right about Murray’s having a singleton, but unfortunately it was in diamonds, not spades.

Card Of Thanks The family of Donald H. Vietor would like to express our gratitude for the many kindnesses shown to us following the loss of our loved one. We thank you all and God bless each and everyone. in Memory In loving remembrance of Del Staley who died one year ago today, January 10, 1982. It's been one year since you left us. It broke our hearts in two. We couldn't quite imagine What life would be like without you. We remember that sweet smile And your precious little laugh. We have so many memories Of the years that quickly passed. They say with time the sorrow And the pain will fade away But we would give anything right now To have you with us another day. Dear, sweet son, what we re saying We believe to be quite true. We love you and you're fondly missed. There will never be another like you. So sadly missed by Mom and Dad, Mamaw and Aunt Lib.
