PELE: Using his head? People in the news Chevy's career another pratfall? HOLLYWOOD (AP) Chevy Chase, newly famous from his falling-down comedies on television’s “Saturday Night Live," arrived here in 1977 with the promise of becoming a bright new film star. Five years and six movies later, the Chevy Chase promise still seems to be on hold. “I’m not concerned,” he says. “I’m working at a job that’s fun, and I think I’m getting better at it. My personality seems to have set in with people, and they like that They enjoy knowing what to expect...! have no fears of disappearing." Chase believes he has his best shots in two new films. He recently completed a part in “National Lampoon’s Vacation’’ as a family man facing the perils of a crosscountry trip. He is now filming “The Deal of the Century ” Chevy Chase at 39 seems more sober than when he arrived to costar with Goldie Hawn in “Foul Play." He has been through it all: failed movies, bad notices (“critics always say. ‘Chevy Chase mugs his way through another movie’’’), a wrecked marriage, a libel suit by Cary Grant over remarks on a TV talk show. Chase's new seriousness may be due to his impending fir-st-time fatherhood. Or. it could be that he is able to evaluate his work as a professional. He said “Foul Play” was “awful.” “It wasn't me," he said. “I felt awkward because 1 had never acted before, except in TV sketches.” And he says he could have done better in “Caddyshack ” But “Seems Like Old Times" was "a joy.” Though. “Modern Problems" he called “a depressing film.” • SAO PAOLO. Brazil (AP) Brazilian soccer hero Pele says he may marry 19-year-old Xuxa, one of his nation’s top fashion models, “but not now." “We have a very great friendship." he said in a television interview Sunday night. "And when this friendship gets to the point where I should marry her. I will.” Pele, 40, has retired from professional sports and spends most of his time in the United States making films and promoting soccer. • LAS VEGAS. Nev. (AP) Comedian Jerry Lewis, who underwent emergency heart surgery three weeks ago, appears to be his old joking self and says he feels “in great shape ’’ Lewis arrived at Desert Springs Hospital on Sunday for an hour-long checkup, and, pointing to his chest, told reporters doctors wanted to “see this thing is holding together." The 56-year old comedian underwent double-bypass surgery Dec. 21 and was released Jan. 1. His doctors say he will be able to lead-a normal life, but must give up smoking. • SADDLE RIVER. N.J. (AP) A fit Richard Nixon, who turned 70 over the weekend, is settling down happily in this affluent New York City suburb and doesn't look his age, the mayor says. The former president spent a quiet birthday at home Sunday with his wife, Pat, their two daughters and three grandchildren. He planned no elaborate celebration, according to spokesman Nicholas Ruwe. Neighbors say Nixon is driven the 50 miles each weekday to his Manhattan office from the $1.2 million home he moved into in October 1981, and appears fit during his daily morning walk. “I think he likes the town, and we like him,” said Mayor Duncan Cameron, who also is 70. “He doesn't look that old. He’s in excellent shape his hair isn’t as gray as mine.” ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) Britain's Prince Charles and Princess Diana may be skiing today in Switzerland, but palace officials are keeping their exact whereabouts a secret. The royal couple are vacationing without their 6-month-old son, Prince William. A spokesman for Buckingham Palace in England said only that the royal couple “are going on holiday” and “may well be skiing.” • THIS WEEK’S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Heading the list Sunday was former President Richard Nixon, 70, while folk singer Joan Baez, 42, and singer Crystal Gayle, 32, also celebrated. Monday’s birthday boys are actor Ray Bolger, 79, and singer Rod Stewart, 38. NBC President Grant Tinker is 57 Tuesday, while actor Robert Stack, 64, comedian Charles Nelson Reilly, 52, and actress Gwen Verdon, 58, all add another year on Thursday. Friday's cake and candles go out to actress Faye Dunaway, 42, actorauthor Tom Tryon, 57, and commentator-author Andy Rooney, 64. Next Saturday means No. 70 for actor Lloyd Bridges, No. 57 for rock ’n’ roller Chuck Berry and No. 46 for former child star Margaret O’Brien.
