Hairbrush doubles as tire scrubber

DEAR HELOISE: When scrubbing white wall tires, steel wool pads and the soapy pads have a tendency to fall apart before all four tires are cleaned. So therefore, my husband discovered a more convenient way to clean the tires without the soapy, scratchy mess. He took my old hairbrush that I no longer used, dipped it in soap and water and found this to be the solution to the problem. The hairbrush makes a good scrubber, does not fall apart, and gets your tires white wall clean. Danny E. Smith FAMILY TRAVELING Dear Heloise: A friend of mine passed on a hint that I think is worth repeating. When traveling with wife and children by bus, airline, boat, etc., pack a little of everyone’s clothes in each suitcase. Include those necessary items such as socks, nightclothes, extra undies, etc., in each suitcase. That way if the carrier loses a piece of your luggage everyone in your party has at least a few items to fall back on. It’s well worth the time and effort.-R.J.W. HINTS FROM HIM Dear Heloise: To protect outside faucets from freezing, I wrap strips of foam rubber several times around the faucet. Then using masking tape, I tape around the foam rubber and slide an empty five-pound coffee can over the foam rubber and faucets. Then I paint the can the same color as my house. No frozen faucets. Ronald Bailey CHOCOLATE CAKE Dear Heloise: I was baking a favorite chocolate cake for my family and I ran out of flour to coat the cake pan. I decided to try powdered cocoa instead and it worked great. Seeing it was a chocolate cake I had no white streaks from the flour and an even more chocolate-looking cake. Ella C. Koubek CRAFTY CARDBOARD Dear Heloise: You’re always asking for hints, and here is mine: When knitting or crocheting, cut out the picture of the item and the directions and tape or glue them to a sturdy piece of cardboard. This is very easy to keep in your knitting basket and much easier to handle than a magazine or book. You can also make notes on the margins or on the back of the cardboard. When you’re finished with the item, you can file the patterns easily. Sally H. Peters PLASTIC EARRINGS Dear Heloise: Those colored rings attached to the plastic caps on the milk jugs or juice jugs make great play earrings for my little daughter. They come in a couple of colors. To help my daughter play house and dress up, I tie a string on the circle and hang it over her ear. Lots of fun! M.B. MINI IRONING BOARD Dear Heloise: Using a three-

eighth piece of scrap plywood, my husband traced the outline of an ironing board. He cut it approximately 36 inches long. I padded it and covered it with an old sheet. Stored in my bedroom closet with the iron, it is so convenient to use when I sew or quickly must press an article of clothing. I place it on a table or end of the bed. Sure saves many trips to the utility room. Louisiana Stamy ★ ★ ★ PILLOW EASE Dear Heloise: Since my bed pillows are quite plump, I sometimes had to pull and tug to get the pillow protectors and then the pillow cases on. Now I take a large plastic bag, put the pillow in it, pull the case tor pillow protector) on at the open end of the plastic bag. Once the pillow is covered, pull the plastic out, and your pillow case is on with

very little effort. Clara Dasenburg SECURE THIMBLE Dear Heloise: I have such small fingers that for years I had trouble keeping a thimble on when I sewed. Then one day, I thought of putting a small piece of adhesive tape around the inside of the thimble. It really works and the thimble hasn’t fallen off since. Doris Hehl ★ * * COLD WEATHER HINT Dear Heloise: My husband kept complaining that his long johns wouldn’t stay down, so I sewed a piece of elastic on the bottom of the legs to serve as a stirrup. Now, a happy husband with warmer legs. Vivian Kopp
