Hoosier leader: Wittman isn't flashy, but gets job done by playing smarter
BLOOMINGTON. Ind AP No l basketball ranking has been carefully orchestrated by l oach Bob Knight, but the main instrument in the Hoosiers' 10-0 start has been Rand\ Wittman. a fifth-year starter who admittedly can't run. jump or pass. I don t have a lot of athletic ability, and I can t jump. I can't make that quick pass inside I'm not a flashy player." says Wittman. "I just try to do the things I can do best. I just try to be consistent. to be smarter than the other player." That s where Wittmans value lies He IS smarter than the other player. He gets open, he takes good shots, he gets in position for rebounds, he directs the Hoosier attack, he makes very, very few errors. In short, he leads. The 6-foot-6 forward has logged more minutes than any other player this season, and he is Indiana's top scorer at 18.8 points per contest. Surprisingly, even for him. he leads the Hoosiers in rebounds at 5.2 boards a game. He's tied for the team lead in is second in assists, has committed the fewest fouls of -any starter and the fewest errors per minute of playing time. As he says, he's not flashy, but he gets the job done. " As for my leadership. I talked with Coach Knight and he w as very dissatisfied with the way I played last year, so I'm just trying to show some leadership this year and play the best I ban. says Wittman. who's hitting 56 percent of his shots from the field. "As for my rebounding this year, that's one of the things I wanted to improve on from last year And a lot of times if I'm playing a quicker player who is shorter, that can be my advantage because of my height." Wittman has started 103 of his 113 college games and. barring further injury, will have seen more action than any Indiana player in history He was an Indiana All-Star at Indianapolis Ben Davis High School, then averaged 7.1 points his freshman year with the Hoosiers. He was in only five games his sophomore season before being red-shirted w ith a broken ankle, then he averaged 10.4 and 11.9 points, respectively, the next two vears.

RANDY WITTMAN: 18.8 scoring average
Wittman, a business major and an NCAA Academic AllAmerican. was one of 10 NCAA post-graduate scholarship winners last year and currently is doing graduate work in public and environmental affairs. "The year I sat out. I learned a lot about the IU system." says Wittman. "And it gave me a chance to mature more. Also, the extra year was beneficial because it gave me a chance to start on my master's degree, and not many players get that

Wittman currently has 1.168 career points diana all-time scoring list. If he finishes the regular season at his current pace, he would wind up sixth Depending on how far the Hoosiers advance in the NCAA tourney. Wittman could move up to fourth. Wittman credits much of his ow n improvement to 6-8 forward Ted Kitchel. his roommate since they were freshmen and his classmate now in graduate school. Kitchel. who appeared in only one game as a freshman before injuring his back, also was red-shirted one season. He was Indiana's leading scorer last year at 19.6 points a game, a firstteam All-Big Ten Conference selection and the team's most valuable player. With Wittman s emergence as a scorer. Kitchel is second this season at a 13.1 average. "With him I have a chance to talk to someone who knows what's going on in our system when things aren't going well." says Wittman. who met Kitchel when they played together on the Indiana high school All-Star team in 1978. "You can talk to other people about your problems, but unless someone's grown up in the system, it's tough to relate. "Last year. Ted had a great year and he worked very hard for all the recognition he got That was something really great for him. It's great having a friend like him " MORE "I grew up in Indiana and I followed the Indiana basketball team when they were good in 1974. 75 and 76. They had great teams in those years." Wittman said of his decision to play for the Hoosiers. "Coach Knight was the deciding factor. He laid it on the line w hen he came to visit me and my parents. He told me it would be hard and I'd have to w ork my butt off if I came here "The coach prepares us for the real world. You've got to be competitive, and you've got to work hard in any job If you're lazy in basketball, you're not going to play. And if you're lazy

But when he w as drafted by the then-Oakland and soon-to-be-Los Angeles Raiders, club owner A 1 Davis was accused of making a blatant pitch to sell tickets in their new home. Memorial Coliseum New England had the No. 1 pick in the draft and used it to take defensive lineman Kenneth Sims from Texas. Eight other teams also passed on Allen two of them going for other running backs. Minnesota taking Darrin Nelson. Atlanta selecting Gerald Riggs before the Raiders' turn came.

doing a job. you're going to get fired. It's not so much wins and losses; he wants us to learn "I've always loved basketball," he continued. "Whenever I was bored at home. I'd go out and shoot baskets in the backyard. Ben Davis i Coach Jerry Hoover pushed us pretty hard while we were in high school. As far as a high school coach was concerned. he was pretty much of a disciplinarian, a lot like Coach Knight." Wittman said his biggest thrill with the Hoosiers was playing on the NCAA championship team of 1981. It was his basket at the halftime buzzer that gave Indiana the lead for good in the title game against North Carolina. "It's every kid's dream, growing up and watching the NCAA tourney on television, that someday he'll get a chance to play or perhaps win a national championship. I was lucky enough to get that chance. “Winning the NTT my freshman year was also a thrill." he said of the 1978-79 Hoosiers "We got off to a rocky start that season (with two tournament losses! in Alaska, and then there was the drug incident (in which three players were kicked off the team for using marijuana). It just seemed like we were up and down in the Big Ten all year. We were the last team to get into the NTT and we ended up winning. That was just icing on the cake for an up-and-down season." How about the 1983 Hoosiers 0 "It's hard to say right now about this team. From man one through 13 there's a lot of competition. There's no superstar on this team like in the past when they had Mike Woodson. Ray Tolbert. Landon Turner and Isiah Thomas. So teams just can't go in and concentrate on one player on this team. "Our new freshmen, w hen they came in. they talked to us and asked us about the way things should be done when they came into a game. When we re on the bench, we want to see all the players do well. I know when I'm out there, it's a plus for me if I see everyone on the bench root for me and try to help me out. I know when things are going bad. you've always got those 13 guys on our team rooting for you."
