Tigers more than ready to play a game

The DePauw basketball team begins their "second season” Thursday when they travel to Indianapolis to face Marian College. DePauw’s record stands at 3-2. Of course, the Tigers record also stood at 3-2 on Dec. 8. DePauw players can hardly be

Sullivan wants to stick

with substitute system

By The Associated Press this season’s expanded Super Bowl tournament, the result of the 57-day players’ strike, is something the National Football League should seriously consider for the future, says William H. Sullivan Jr., president of the New England Patriots. Sullivan’s Patriots were one of the six beneficiaries of the NFL's decision to increase the number of playoff teams from Id to 16 eight each from the American and National conferences, instead of the customary five apiece. The Pats, after a disastrous 214 record last season, rebounded for a 5-4 mark in the strikeshortened 1982 season and were one of the three “extra" AFC teams qualifying for the playoffs, which begin this weekend New England made it by beating the Buffalo Bills 30-19 last Sunday on the final weekend of the regular season. “Although cynics may ridicule the whole thing (the playoff format), the honor or the opportunity of being in the playoffs has greatly lifted the spirits of our fans," said Sullivan. “Their reaction after

blamed if they are chomping at the bit to get back on the court. When they take the court against Marian, it will have been 30 days since their last game. “IT’S OBVIOUSLY unusual to go that long between games but we decided it would be better to play in a tournament over

the game was the most startling thing I’ve ever seen in all my years in sports. “That one victory Sunday erased all the bad moments of our team’s past for the fans. It was great, really great.” Sullivan said the team’s ineffectiveness in recent years the Patriots have not won a playoff game since 1963 and its poor attendance prior to the strike were hurting the New England area. “I think this particular section of the country is a little slower in having large attendance numbers unless the teams are in a pennant race,” he said. The system enabled most teams to remain in playoff contention for nearly the whole season. Going into the next-to-last weekend of the season, only three of the 28 NFL teams had been eliminated from the Super Bowl tournament, and heading into the final weekend, only six were out. Under the past format, the three division champions and two "wild card” teams from each conference qualified for the playoffs. Using that system this season, first-place finishers

Miami, Cincinnati and the Los Angeles Raiders would have qualified in the AFC. along with wild cards San Diego and Pittsburgh. In the NFC, it would have been champions Washington, Green Bay and Atlanta, plus Dallas and Minnesota. It would have meant that New England, the New York Jets and Cleveland would not have made it in the AFC, and St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Detroit would have been out in the NFC. "Maybe, by accident we.have stumbled onto something,” Sullivan said. “For the long run, the more teams involved in the playoffs, the greater (fan) interest there is going to be. "I would think that somebody smarter than I could come up with the best i playoff) format from both plans ” While Sullivan is highly in favor of increasing the number of teams in the playoffs, he appears to have very little support. “Of the people I’ve talked to, there is very little sentiment for continuing the playoff format of this season,” said Tex Schramm, president of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Christmas holiday break may have put a few kinks in the offense, but South Putnam’s defense was as good as ever Tuesday night. The Eagles routed Owen Valley 49-35 in a West Central Conference high school girls basketball game at South Putnam. The Eagles are now 10-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. They go to North Central (Sullivan County) Thursday night for a non-conference game. “WE PLAYED WELL. 1 was especially pleased with them for the first half.” coach David

Now USFL must sign players

NEW YORK (AP) - ‘ This is the easy part.” Commissioner Chet Simmons said after calling out the names of a few more college football players. ‘‘Now, we’ve got to go out and sign ’em.” The “we” in this case is the United States Football League, which began on Tuesday and concludes today the stocking of its 12 rosters for the start of its inaugural spring and summer season. The USFL drafted stars, starting w'ith Pitt quarterback Dan Marino, and also selected stars like Stanford quarterback John Elway, Penn State running back Curt Warner and Nebraska center Dave Rimington. from territorial

Pacers shot down again

PORTLAND. Ore. (AP) - Portland won on the strength of one of its starting guards while temporarily losing the services of its other starting guard in a 119-117 National Basketball Association victory over the Indiana Pacers. Guard Jim Paxson sank a 20foot jumper with four seconds left Tuesday night to create the final score. He scored 13 Of his game-high 32 points during a fourth-period rally in which the Blazers moved from behind. Guard Darnell Valentine crashed to the floor after a wild drive to the basket late in the second quarter and received a stress fracture in his left foot. Team officials said he probably would be out of action six weeks. Valentine scored 12 points before he was helped off the floor and taken to a hospital for X-rays. Portland Coach Jack Ramsay said the loss of Valentine is a “severe blow. One of our guards will have to step in and do the job. We’ll start Lafayette Lever. Jim Paxson will play

“I’M SURE THE team has spent some time thinking about that loss. They’re disappointed with a 3-2 record and we’re all looking forward to a good ‘second season,”’ Steele said. Junior Dave Hathaway leads the squad in scoring with a 15.3 average and rebounding with a

"We had good practices over the vacation and I was expecting the team to come out and play sharp.” The Eagles led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and took the Patriots out of the game in the second with some excellent defense. Owen Valley scored only four points in the second period and just six in the third. Both coaches substituted freely through the second half. Kim Zeronik paced South with 14 points as the only player in double figures. Beckman

training camps. The NFL. with this year’s draft coming at the end of April two months into the USFL season is the new league’s competition. Simmons acknowledged that the USFL is operating at a “disadvantage in timing” in competing against the NFL. Collegians can tell the USFL they want more than they’re being offered or they’ll wait for the NFL but the NFL teams will face no such pressure because, when they draft, the USFL will be playing. Still, Simmons said he believed the USFL had a realistic chance of signing every one of its 12 first-round choices.

remaining. “Indiana played a fantastic game,” Ramsay said. “It's a tribute to our players that we beat them. I don’t think you'll see a team play a better game than Indiana did tonight.” Knight and rookie Clark Kenlogg led Indiana scoring with 23 points each. Kellogg fouled out with 4:44 left. “We had our chances, had them most of the way,” said Indiana Coach Jack McKinney. “We did a pretty good job, but it hurt when we lost Clark Kellogg on fouls. There, with him, went our rebounding.” Wayne Cooper contributed 10 of Portland’s 43 rebounds. George Johnson had 11 of the Pacers’ 37. Johnson missed a 30-foot, three-point shot at the buzzer. Same teams headed for Terre Haute as were at Evansville ; By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Being undefeated is not such an exclusive club in the Terre Haute semistate area at this point in the season. As of Jan. 1, there were seven undefeated teams feeding toward the Hulman Civic Center semistate, a substitute for Evansville’s Roberts Stadium this year. Evansville is hosting an NCAA regional this year. ACCORDING TO STATISTICS compiled by Dave Hunter of WAOV Radio Station in Vincennes, and contributed to by sportswriters and broadcasters in this semistate area, Evansville has three of the seven undefeated-6-0 Bosse and North and 5-0 Harrison. Obviously they haven’t played each other yet. Other undefeated teams include 9-0 Loogootee, 7-0 Tecumseh and 6-0 Brazil and Vincennes Lincoln. South Vermillion got out of another somewhat elite group Tuesday night with a 39-36 win over Staunton. At this point. North Putnam, West Washington and North Daviess are all winless. The Cougars are 0-6 going into Friday’s game at Edgewood and Saturday’s visit from Fountain Central. North Daviess, the school that lost its season opener in six overtimes to Switz City, is 0-7 and West Washington is 0-8. THE TERRE HAUTE regional, of course, is the one of most interest for this area. Behind Brazil’s 6-0 record, there are four teams with one loss and they are in two sectionals. Montezuma is 7-1 and Terre Haute South 5-1 in the Terre Haute South sectional. Worthington is 8-1 and Eastern Greene 6-1 in the Switz City sectional. Maybe someone outside of Bloomfield or Linton can win that sectional this year. A few records of note around the semistate area are: former Owen Valley High School coach Jerry Stroud has a 7-2 Paoli team; former Greencastle coach Roger Tuggle is 1-7 at Castled but one of three one-win ball clubs headed toward the Boonville sectional. And Jim Coon a former Cloverdale High player and assistant coach, has a 5-1 team at Sullivan. If records mean anything at this point. Princeton and Bedford join Boonville in two of the weakest looking sectionals feeding into Hulman. No, I'm not talking about the caliber of competition the teams play, just their records. AT PRINCETON, THE best record is Wood Memorial's 5-4 mark out of Oakland City. Princeton is 4-3, Gibson Southern 4-4. North Posey 4-5 and Mt. Vernon 2-6 and New Harmony 2-5. Bedford-North Lawrence has a 5-2 record to top its sectional field, while Bloomington South is 3-4, Orleans 3-6. Medora 2-7 and Mitchell 1-7. Note here that coach J.R. Holmes left Mitchell for Bloomington South. The following are records of Terre Haute semistate hopefuls:
