Hints from Heloise
DEAR HELOISE: Would you please look in your files for the recipe for Olive Nut Filling for sandwiches? It is better than any I have ever tasted. I have lost my copy and cannot remember the proportions used. Hugs to you. M.H. ★ * * Fellow sandwich lovers, I think you will agree with M.H. that the olive nut filling is delicious and so simple to make. So, if you don’t have the recipe for your files, grab the scissors and save it for future reference. Just mash six ounces of softened cream cheese with a fork, then add one-half cup mayonnaise. Blend well. Stir in one-half cup pecans, one cup salad olives, two tablespoons olive juice and a dash of pepper NO salt. Mix well. The filling will be slightly mushy, but after it is refrigerated for a few hours, it will be firmer and of spreading consistency. Besides making a delicious sandwich, this is great on toast or lettuce leaves. Or, combine the two (toast and lettuce leaves) if desired. Should you have any left over, the spread also keeps well in the fridge for a week or two. Heloise LETTER OF LAUGHTER Dear Heloise: I have a friend I have known since elementary school, and she is the same today as back then. Anyway, the reason I’m writing you is that she called me about a stain on her laminated counter top and I told her to use a weak solution of liquid chlorine bleach and water (follow directions on the bottle. H.) and a little “oldfashioned elbow grease” on it. Well, she was silent for a moment then suddenly said, “I have the bleach, but where do you buy elbow grease?” That’s her all right. D. Williams * * ★ That is funny! But to be serious, as I mentioned above, never use full-strength bleach on a counter top as it will remove the finish. Heloise MICROWAVING TIP Dear Heloise: When warming or sauteing certain foods in the microwave, try using a cheap paper plate to cover the dish. It won’t get limp and fall into the food as do paper towels, waxed paper, etc. Cathy STICKY PROBLEM Dear Heloise: Thought I’d let you know how smart I was today! Somehow, I managed to get a cut glass drinking glass wedged into a large mug while washing dishes. Putting it back into the soapy water didn’t help at all, and I was really nonplussed! Then, I had a brainstorm! I dried “them” off, trickled a little cooking oil in between the two and filled the glass with ice cubes. Waited a few minutes and voila! The glass came out as smooth as silk. Nancy W. NO AIR Dear Heloise: Whenever I place any food in a plastic bag for the freezer, I press all the air from the bag that I can, then insert a drinking straw in the comer of the bag and draw out all the air possible from the bag. I quickly remove the straw and seal the bag. This seems to help keep food from drying out and also makes the package smaller so it takes up less room. Georgia Hutcherson
Olive nut filling recipe great for sandwiches and salads too
BAY LEAVES IN BAGS Dear Heloise: Another use for nylon net. Instead of putting bay leaves loose in sugar, flour, etc., to keep little bugs away, I made a small bag of nylon net and enclosed the leaves. Saves picking them out when you are ready to use the flour. — Mrs. J.F.K.

DISPOSABLE GLOVES Dear Heloise: If you color your hair at home, save the gloves that come in the kit. There are so many uses for them. Besides using the gloves for my crafts, like decoupage, I find them great for protecting my nails when painting. I think they work great for
the kids to use while they finger-paint. Rosemary Armstrong ROLL-A-LONG Dear Heloise: Last Christmas I was given a kit of crewel with twenty-two colors of yam. As I separated the colors, I hung them over the back of the sofa in proper order. Then came the problem of how
January 5,1983, The Putnam County Banner-Graphic
to arrange the yarns for easy identification before putting them in my work basket. I hit on the idea of rewinding them on empty toilet paper rolls. Having only one roll myself, I called all my friends on the block and immediately got five rolls. Also, using a paper towel
tube, I could wind two colors on each roll and write the yam color number on the end next to the color. I secured the yam ends with hairdressers’ paper adhesive tape. Now I can easily find the color I want to work without mistakes. Sue Stephens
