Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane. Ph D., M.D.

Peggy and Mike are quarreling at bedtime about her abdominal feminine prosthesis. But Mike is only partly right. Physicians agree with Peggy. CASE C-735: Peggy R., age 26, often feuds with her husband in the bedroom. “Dr. Crane,” she said, “I confess that I am probably 1C lbs. too heavy. “So I have been wearing a girdle to hold in my abdomen and give me a more , slender look. “But Mike claims women should never use girdles or corsets! “He insists that if I dieted and exercised the muscles over my tummy, then I’d really be slender and not need to fool the public. “But, Dr. Crane, what about when a wife gets pregnant and bulges noticeably?” PROSTHETIC ALLIES God Almighty gave us a superior brain by which to improve on our bodies by what are called “prosthetic aids”. Theoretically, we shouldn't require false teeth or eye glasses, canes and crutches, plus hearing aids, but we often do! Thus, God left a weak spot at the front of our abdomen to permit the bulge of pregnant wives and also let us stoop over to pick up something from the floor. If the breastbone thus

extended dear down to the pubic bone, we’d be as rigid as a stove pipe! So God gave us 3 sets of muscles that cover our abdomen in front, which serve as our natural “corset.” Peggy’s husband is correct in saying if we exercised properly and never added any extra weight, we wouldn’t need a girdle or corset. But that’s “par” and most of us don’t score par. So a girdle (and also a maternity corset) not only add to a woman’s youthful appeal, but also prevent the many months of severe stretching of that natural girdle, namely, the 3 sets of crisscrossing muscles in front. Abnormally long periods of muscle stretching, as in a pregnant woman, will take much of the elastidty out of muscles, which is why lack of a girdle or maternity corset, leaves such a young mother with a flabby abdominal wall. Same happens when a person who is very fat, then loses 25 or more pounds, so don’t hesitate to use a girdle or corset as a man-made supplement for the 3 sets of muscles that form your normal “girdle”. A girdle is like shoes, dothing, hats, etc., namely, an invention of the brain to aid weakness in our natural body.
