Ayala's career in serious jeopardy
SAN ANTONIO, Texas <AP> A Texas prosecutor says he wants to push for revocation of championship boxing contender Tony Ayala Jr.’s 10 year probation here because of Ayala's arrest in New Jersey. Bexar County District Attorney Sam Millsap says he will try to bring the 19-year-old Ayala here from New Jersey for a hearing on the matter. Ayala, the undefeated No. 1 contender for the World Boxing Association junior mid dleweight title, has registered 19 knockouts in 22 straight victories, but run into problems on the streets. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Fort Wayne Christian, a first-time participant with an enrollment of just 66 students, is among the 395 teams that will begin sectional play in the 73rd Indiana High School Athletic Association boy’s basketball tournament. The IHSAA announced its tourney sites and school assignments on Monday, and Christian is the only additional entrant. The total of 395 teams, however, matches last year's entry list because of the closing of Hammond Tech. Christian has been assigned to the Fort Wayne South sectional. As usual, with two sectionals scheduled in the Fort Wayne Coliseum, tourney play there begins a day earlier than any other site. The Fort Wayne I sectional opens Monday, Feb. 28. Other

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Sam Wyche, quarterback coach for the San Francisco 49ers, reportedly is the top contender to be head football coach at Indiana University. One of several reports linking Wyche to the college football post said today that he was in Indiana to decide whether he wants the job at Bloomington. Kit Klingelhoffer, the assistant head of sports information at Indiana, said today, “I think we will have a coach by the end of the week.” Klingelhoffer added he expected an announcement to be made at least by Monday when the National Collegiate Athletic Association convention is to start in San Diego.
Butler pulls upset; ISU, Wabash and Aces lose
By The Associated Press Butler Coach Joe Sexson says the Bulldogs “just outplayed" favored Ball State. But Senior Lynn Mitchem, who led Monday night's 74-60 upset victory, said the Cardinals may have taken the Bulldogs too lightly. “We were just ready to play. We caught them by surprise,” said Mitchem, a 6-foot-5 forward who led all scorers with 28 points. “They probably came in here and looked at our 3-6 record and thought we would be a pushover. Everything just fell into place. ” In other Indiana college games Monday night, St. Louis edged Indiana State 73-71, New Orleans pounded Evansville 867T, Central Michigan smashed Anderson 97-72, Belmont. Tenn. whipped Wabash 95-72, and Manchester edged Marion 7675: At Butler, the Bulldogs lost a onetime 22-point lead but got 10 straight free throws in the final
resulted in charges of burglary, aggravated assault and sexual assault. The arrest also could provide grounds for revoking the 10year probation Ayala received tor an attack on a young woman here four years ago, Millsap said. So far, Ayala has avoided any lengthy stay behind bars, but Millsap said Monday he will try to change that. “Ayala has a history of problems with the law which can no longer be tolerated.’’ he said. "There will be no further instance of deals being made to gain his release." Millsap said he talked to Passaic County Attorney

He could not be reached later in the morning for comment on whether Wyche was in Indiana. Wyche is top offensive assistant to Bill W'alsh, head of the 49ers, who won the 1982 Super Bowl but did not earn a place in the playoffs at the end of this National Football League season. “It’s not a question of whether I could do it or not,” Wyche said Monday. “But I wonder if I would get into it and dislike it so much I’d regret the decision. He said he felt “a little uneasy” about recruiting for a college team. The vacancy was created when Lee Corso was fired after a 5-6 season in 1982. Under 10 years of Corso’s coaching. 2'-> minutes to hand Ball State its third loss in nine games. The Cardinals' previous defeats were to No.l-ranked Indiana and N 0.2 Memphis State. “My main concern was holding them down. I didn’t know if we could score enough points,” Sexson said of the highscoring Ball State offense, which brought an 84-point average into the game at Hinkle Fieldhouse. “I think we just outplayed them. We had to get the ball inside, and I thought we did a good job with that.” Butler took the lead for good at 4-2, widened the gap to 41-19 and took a 41-24 lead at halftime. Butler again opened a 20point lead at 58-38 before the Cardinals began their final rally. With three minutes remaining, a basket by Chris Shelton, a three-point play by Jon Mansbury and another field goal by Shelton cut the lead to six points. 64-58. Larry Ikerd
Joseph Falcone by telephone Monday. A hearing on whether to present the case to a Passaic County grand jury is scheduled for Jan. 12. The prosecutor said Ayala probably could not be tried in New Jersey for six to eight months because of a crowded docket. “He signed a waiver of extradition as part of the conditions for probation, so we should be able to get him back quickly,” Millsap said. If Ayala is sent to prison, it would cancel a $1 million paycheck he expected to receive for fighting champion Davey Moore sometime this spring.

McCallum, the Cardinals’ leading scorer at nearly 22 points a game, hit only six of 19 attempts from the field. “That’s about as good as you can do against McCallum. Skip Jones was the best guard we had to play McCallum, and he did a great job,” Sexson said. A 1 Brown, the first-year Ball State coach, said, “Butler played a heck of a game. We got down 20 points before we started doing anything. They hurt us early with their physical defense. Despite the loss, this was a game we needed to get ready for the (Mid-American) Conference race. We’ll be ready Wednesday for Bowling Green.” Luther Burden, a 6-foot-l sophomore, scored 21 points, in-
