BETTY BUCKLEY: Fat cat People in the news
Stuntwoman gets record settlement LOS ANGELES (AP) A stuntwoman crippled when she doubled for actress Farrah Fawcett during a filmed car crash in the movie “Cannonball Run” will get a record sl.l million worker’s compensation settlement, her lawyer said Monday. The settlement between Heidi Von Beltz, 25, and Chubb Indemnity Co., which insured Cannonball Productions, was to be approved by an administrative judge for the California worker compensation appeals board, said attorney David Sabih. Miss Von Beltz first asked for $1.5 million and the insurance company originally offered $300,000, said Sabih, who represents the crippled woman with his partner, Melvin Belli. Sabih said the sl.l million is the largest worker's compensation settlement in U.S. history, breaking the $050,000 record set last year in another case in Los Angeles. Miss Von Beltz who was left a paraplegic by the June 25, 1980, accident sued actor Burt Reynolds and all the film’s other principals for $35 million in June 1981. Miss Von Beltz was hospitalized for seven months after the accident. She was standing in for Miss Fawcett as a passenger in a 1961 Astin Martin driven by stuntman Jimmy Nickerson, who was a double for Reynolds. The car, heading down a stretch of Nevada highway, was supposed to narrowly avoid collision with five other vehicles, but collided with the second vehicle, a van. • As Grizabella, the frail, fading Glamour Cat, Betty Buckley has to perform a couple of daredevil feats every night in "Cats.” One is her ascent at the end of the show to cat heaven "the Heaviside layer.” as T.S. Eliot called it. Miss Buckley rides to cat heaven, a cozy spot in a hole in the ceiling of the Winter Garden Theater, on two mechanical lifts. The first, in the shape of a gigantic tire that looks like E.T.’s spaceship as it magically rises off the stage, takes her halfway up. At that point, high above the audience, Miss Buckley steps onto a device that looks like a cherry picker for the final leg of her journey. "I don’t look down,” Miss Buckley remarked over lunch the other day. "I told Trevor Nunn, the director, that he had to ride it first to show me it is safe. He did Then I rode it with him. “I'm always worried about my tail, which is very long. I have to be sure of where it is, so it doesn’t get stuck. If it did. I’d be Isadora Duncan.” Her other feat is her moving rendition of "Memories,” the song that most of the audience already knows because Barbra Streisand's recording has made it so popular. How do you compete with Barbra Streisand? “It was fairly intimidating," Miss Buckley replied. "Most of the time, you give yourself a little room for failure. But with this, I had to be 200 percent right away. I was trying so hard in previews that I had a vocal block. I couldn’t do it right. I went rushing back to Paul Gavert, my voice teacher for the last eight years. During the four years I did the television series ‘Eight Is Enough,’ I flew back here from California every six weeks to work with him. Paul said to me: ‘You’re good, kid. You have been training for this all your life.’ He patched me together and got my confidence back.” NEW YORK (AP) Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, already greeted by glowing reviews for their latest films, took the National Society of Film Critics' awards for best actor and best actress of 1982. The society, composed of 42 film critics from national publications, honored Hoffman for portraying an actor who wins a woman’s role in a soap opera in “Tootsie.” Ms. Streep was chosen for her portrayal of a young Polish woman who survived a Nazi concentration camp in the movie “Sophie’s Choice.” Ben Kingsley came in second for best actor for his title role in the movie “Gandhi” and Jessica Lange was second for her roles in “Frances” and “Tootsie.” The society, voting Sunday at the Algonquin Hotel here, selected “Tootsie” best picture of the year. “E.T., The Ex-tra-Terrestrial,” was second. • LONDON (AP) Princess Diana, wary of horses since she broke her arm in a childhood fall from a pony, has been coaxed back into the saddle by her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth 11, according to the Sun newspaper. The British tabloid published photos today showing the 21-year-old princess riding a gray horse and said they were taken Monday on the grounds of the queen’s estate at Sandringham in Norfolk, where the royal family has been spending the New Year’s holiday. “The queen chose a safe old gray mare to put Diana back in the saddle. Yet it trotted ’round in circles when the princess wanted to go straight,” the Sun reported. The paper said the queen shouted instructions to Diana when the horse wandered into the undergrowth. When the engagement of Charles and Diana was announced in February 1981, Diana said the couple had every outdoor activity in common, “except I don’t ride.”
